Chapter 9
Minji thought about Dong’s words and even talked with Gahyeon at work about her own view of humans.
“Well, my parents raised me the best they could… I’m their only kid, so I have a human complex sometimes,” She shrugged. “But they tried to educate me on bunny stuff… but as we all know…” she frowned.
“Right…” Minji sighed. “But you seem to be okay?” She asked.
“Oh! Yeah! I’m fine. I went to a hybrid school and then went to a blended academy like most hybrids. So it wasn’t that I was deprived. Just don’t really know anything… like for a while I kept getting ear infections because I didn’t know about the trapped water in my ears…” She chuckled.
“Ah, yeah I had a few of those growing up. My mom would sit me down and have to drain my ears,” Minji chuckled at the memory, how she had played outside with other kits with a hose and that was how she got her ear infections.
“What did I miss…?” Gahyeon frowned.
“What do you mean?” Minji asked.
“Well… You grew up with bunnies right?” She watched the older hybrid nod her head. “So what do I not know? Like… do we have anything special?” She whispered.
“Uh…” Minji looked at the bunny, seeing her grey ears up at attention, waiting for any kind of answer. “Well… How far can you put your ears down?” She watched as the hybrid in front of her pinned them down just like Minji did and kept them down. “Does it hurt?”
“No…? Should it hurt?”
“Yes,” Minji laughed. “That means you have lop in you,” Minji smiled. “I’m half lop, which means I can keep my ears down for extended amounts of time.” The bunny lifted her ears, showing just how long they were when at full attention. “See?” She smiled.
“Wow!” Gahyeon gasped. “So… I’m a cross! That’s so cool!” She squealed.
“Yeah,” Minji smiled. “You know… you could hang out with me outside of work… ask me a million questions then.”
Gahyeon held true to her word, and Minji did keep up her end of the bargain as well.
“What do you mean you don’t like it?” Minji frowned. “What kind of bunny are you?” She scoffed jokingly while watching Gahyeon’s face contort with disgust.
“It’s gross…” Gahyeon whined. “Eat it for me,” She pushed the dandelion treat into Minji’s hands, watching her eat her own. “It’s literally a plant Unnie…” Gahyeon frowned.
“A delicious plant,” Minji pointed. “Come on, hit me with another question,” She asked before taking a bite out of the bar.
“Heat cycles.”
“Okay.”
“How come we don’t get them…” She frowned. “My hybrid friends get them, but I don’t know why I don’t…”
“Ah. So bunnies, we are constantly in heat. Hence the whole sexual disposition. But it’s mild so we don’t entirely emit a scent or go feral because we can’t get laid.” She explained. “Hit me again,”
“So… if I got laid… I would always have a chance at getting pregnant?” Gahyeon asked.
“Yup. And right after too. Our bodies are kind of… built to keep reproducing.” Minji let out a sigh, watching the horror spread on the younger hybrid’s face. “I know… it’s weird and gross,” She frowned.
“So we don’t even get like a day to recover? Our bodies are just like… ready to go?” Gahyeon whispered.
“Sadly, yes.”
Gahyeon let out a whine, shaking her head.
“What about bunny-related holidays?”
“Um… we have Burrowing Day… Hop Festival… And for kits, there’s kit graduation,” Minji shrugged.
“Kit-graduation I’ve done… What’s Burrowing Day?” Gahyeon asked.
“It’s a day where all bunnies celebrate the escape from a burrow,” Minji explained. “It’s more of a novelty now, but a long long time ago, it was when the first bunny started to evolve, kind of like new years for humans. We celebrate the growth of our species and celebrate by returning to the burrowing grounds of our ancestors. But I just stay inside my home… Not many bunnies to travel with these days,” She sighed.
“That’s so cool… What about Hop Festival?” The younger bunny beamed.
“Hop Festival is more of a…. claimed holiday,” Minji chuckled. “It’s usually a smaller city thing, bunnies come out and compete against each other on who’s the best bunny. It lasts about two weeks. Just a bunch of athletic competitions. Similar to the Hunting Festival for the other hybrids,” she explained.
“Have you ever competed?” Gahyeon asked.
“I have. I usually compete in the zig-zag cross dash,” Minji smiled.
Gahyeon stared at the older hybrid in awe. She was finally getting all of the answers she had growing up that an internet search couldn’t give her. Someone with experience and knowledge.
“And what is that?” Gahyeon smiled before linking her arm with Minji’s.
“It’s hard to explain… you have to watch it in action… You know what. Next Hop Festival, we’ll take the time together. I’ll take you.” Minji gave the younger bunny a smile, watching her nod her head eagerly.
“I would love that!” Gahyeon squealed.
Minji liked having Gahyeon around. She was the youngest in her litter and was happy to have someone to whom she could show the ropes. She imagined that her siblings felt the same way as her. Excited and all fuzzy to teach another younger bunny how to be a bunny.
They continued walking around town, laughing and joking, window shopping when they ran into Minji’s friend.
“Yoohyeon? What are you doing?” Minji asked.
“Oh, hey,” Yoohyeon smiled. “Just waiting on the kid,” She pointed at the hybrid kid behind her, causing Minji to tilt her head. “Not mine!” She quickly stated. “I’m babysitting today.”
Minji saw the pointed ears, but wagging bushy tail, causing her to frown.
“Kitten…?” Minji asked.
“No, a puppy. She’s got husky in her,” Yoohyeon chuckled. “She’s adorable isn’t she?”
“Who’s the kid?” The bunny asked.
“Siyeon’s. She has an emergency meeting today… And it’s her weekend, so she asked if I could watch her.” The puppy turned to the little kid, watching her walk over with a small toy from the little vending machine.
“Unnie, look!” The younger puppy held up the little toy, showing Yoohyeon what she got.
Minji wondered if that was how it would be with Bora’s kid. Letting the kid tag along and follow her places… she shook her head at the whole idea, not wanting to think about it at that moment.
“How did Siyeon have a hybrid kid…”
“Her ex is a hybrid, he was kind of a douche… and said her job was too demanding so she only gets to see Jiyoon for like… Two weekends a month,” Yoohyeon explained. “Anyway… Who’s your bunny friend?” She smiled, tail wagging.
“This is Gahyeon, she’s an intern at the company I work at.” Minji introduced. “Gahyeon this is Yoohyeon,” she smiled.
“Intern? I didn’t know you could intern in that field…” Yoohyeon muttered. “How does that even work..? Would it be like a shadowing kind of deal or hands-on..”
“Other job. Other job. Other job.” Minji spoke through gritted teeth, watching the puppy for a few seconds.
“OH, RIGHT OTHER JOB!!!” Yoohyeon gasped. “I’m so sorry…” She whispered.
“Other job?” Gahyeon asked Minji, raising an eyebrow at her. “Unnie do you have secrets?”
“There is a child present,” Minji muttered.
“Jiyoon-ah, cover your ears,” Yoohyeon frowned.
“Are you??” Gahyeon stared at the older woman, watching her fold right there. “YOU ARE!” She gasped.
“Don’t tell anyone!” Minji shouted. “It’s just to pay rent and cover a lot of bills because it’s hard living here! Keep it to yourself please!” She pleaded.
“What’s that like?! Why do you even have a normal job?!” Gahyeon squealed, nearly binkying at the older woman.
“I have a normal job because I get bored not doing anything all day. I have sessions three times a week and I prefer to keep that part of my life private as it’s no one’s business,” She quickly explained, holding the bunny’s hands in her own. “Okay?” She asked.
“Okay,” Gahyeon chuckled. “Nice to know you aren’t ashamed of it,” She smiled.
“I’m not, I like the extra cash though. Just prefer people to see me as a bunny rather than… that.” She hated being assumed as that. She was more than just a sexual rabbit. She had a soul and she had other interests. Genuine curiosity and a brilliant mind. “So what’s on your plan today?” She asked the puppy.
“Taking Jiyoon to the park,” Yoohyeon shrugged. “Then back to Siyeon’s place, let her calm down before her mom gets home,” She added.
“You and Siyeon are pretty close now…” Minji muttered.
“We’ve gone on a lot of dates… I’m kind of afraid to ask her what we are…” She chuckled nervously. “Afraid she’ll say something bad…” She frowned.
“I’m sure she won’t,” Gahyeon smiled. “Whoever she is, if she trusts you around her pup then clearly you’re someone special to her,” She added.
Minji hated that Gahyeon was right. But then again humans were different. They would leave their young with anyone if it meant they could escape for just a few hours. Hybrids were different. Picky about who watched their kids. She had a different time since she was watched by her siblings.
“Yeah… I am… aren’t I?” Yoohyeon smiled.
Minji could see her tail wagging and she was glad that they were able to give her some kind of happy feeling to carry.
The bunnies ended up going with Yoohyeon to the park, just hanging out with her, and the pup was incredibly energetic.
She let the pup chase her for a while, running and laughing with her before pretending to fall and letting her jump on her.
“I got you!” Jiyoon giggled while tackling the bunny.
“Oh no! What will I do??” Minji gasped, laughing with her. “I’ve been caught by the mean wolf!” She threw an arm over her eyes, pretending to be dead and earning a squeal from the young pup.
“I’m not mean!” The pup giggled, tail wagging while climbing all over the bunny. “Unnie?” She whispered before poking her arm. “Unnie…?” She poked her again, only for the bunny to wrap her arms around her and start tickling her. “No! You tricked me!” She erupted into laughter while being held hostage, her focus on the pup in her arms as she sat up.
“Jiyoon-ah! Your mom is here!” Yoohyeon shouted, catching Minji’s attention. Her ears were up at attention, listening for any kind of call from Gahyeon and Yoohyeon since they were a good distance away.
“Alright kid,” Minji chuckled before looking up in the direction the voice came from. She saw the third person, the platinum blonde hair. “Your mom’s here,” She sighed.
“Aw… but I want to keep playing…” Jiyoon frowned while standing up.
“Maybe your mom will play with you.” Minji stood up, dusting off her shorts before taking the pup’s hand in her own. “Come on, I’m sure she’s excited to hang out with you,” she smiled.
They walked back, well Minji walked, and Jiyoon skipped next to her.
Siyeon seemed happy to see her pup, but not entirely thrilled about Minji. She gave her a pleasant smile, but it seemed off to the bunny.
“Jiyoon-ah!” She smiled the second she saw her daughter.
“Mommy!” Jiyoon giggled before letting go of the bunny’s hand and tackling her mother’s legs. “I got to play chase with bunny Unnie!” She smiled.
“Bunny Unnie..?” Siyeon frowned while looking up at Minji.
“I won’t see her again so… Won’t be a reason to know my name,” Minji muttered quietly.
“I had a lot of fun! She played so good mommy!” Jiyoon continued. “She even pretended to be dead!” She smiled.
Minji looked at Gahyeon, seeing the same feeling wash over her. She tilted her head, nodding toward the exit, both of them understanding what the other was saying.
“We better get going… We have some stuff to do,” Minji quickly stated.
“Already?” Yoohyeon frowned.
“Yeah… Bunny stuff,” Gahyeon shrugged while following the older hybrid.
Once the two were far enough, Gahyeon linked her arm with Minji’s, glancing back before her ears fell.
“You felt it too right?” Minji asked.
“I don’t think she likes you very much…” Gahyeon frowned.
