"Devil do you like drums? Do you like cigarettes, dominos, rum?" "Only sun downs, Wednesdays, Christmas"
Wednesday was confused, angry, tired, and well if she was honest with herself.
Heartbroken, she trusted Enid.
Why was this happening?
She should have known all of this was too good to be true. I mean what are the chances that a god just shows up and decides to give you everything and anything you’ve ever wanted with the only requirement being that you marry her?
That she saves you from a decades-long curse?
That she provides for you?
That she cares about you?
“Baby Addams, I don’t want to interrupt your existential crisis or anything but you have time for like 2 more questions before she shows up.”
Wednesday’s attention snapped back to the oracle who was trying to dry her tears as quickly as she could.
She didn’t have time to panic, she had to get answers while she still could.
“Why did nobody stop her? I’ve met the other gods they don’t look like people who would just step aside and let one of their own massacre an entire bloodline.”
“It’s not that simple,” explained the oracle “The gods are each powerful in their own ways but obviously some are more well suited for things like combat, and others' strengths lie in different aspects. If the rest of the gods tried to fight Enid there was no way they would have won and the earth wouldn’t have been torn apart in the process.”
“But there has to be someone who could have done something. There has to be someone who was at least just as strong.”
“There is one god who is powerful to create a standstill with Enid if they were ever to fight one-on-one. Her name is Bianca, she is the goddess of the sea but she doesn’t exactly like the company of the other gods so she secludes herself in her underwater palace.”
An underwater palace? Could she hide from Enid there?
“And the king god? Why didn’t he do anything?”
The oracle stays quiet for a moment before answering, “I can’t see him, I can see everyone else in the world but him. If you want to know the answer to that you’ll have to find him yourself.”
Before Wednesday can ask where she can find the king the cave is illuminated in a bright silver light.
Then she hears her,
“Wednesday! I know you’re here. Please you have to hear me out! I-I’m sorry I swear I was going to tell you I just didn’t know how!”
The oracle points her finger down one of the tunnels “If you head down there it’ll lead you out of the cave and near the ocean. If you’re going to contact Bianca you’ll need to get her attention.”
“How do I do that?”
“Well, I can’t give you the answer to everything, there’s just no time.”
The oracle giggles, “She is very fond of her goldfish though.”
“But how do I-”
“WEDNESDAY I CAN HEAR YOU!”
Wednesday turns towards the staircase and hears Enid’s footsteps approaching very quickly.
“There’s no time for that baby Addams now go. Hurry! I’ll keep her here for a while. After all, this is my cave.”
Wednesday nods and runs down the tunnel “Thank you!”
As Wednesday runs down the tunnel she sees the exit disappear behind her.
The only light in the tunnel was from the exit which did nothing to illuminate her path. She tripped and stumbled her way closer to the end.
She’s not sure how long she ran but eventually, she saw the light at the end growing brighter.
And before she knew it she was on a beach. She’d never been to the beach before, while catching her breath she looked around. The sand on the beach was yellow and there weren’t many rocks but there were some larger boulders next to a cliff. The entire beach was surrounded by mountains and it looked like the only way to it was through the tunnel which had now sealed itself off.
She also noticed that near one of the boulders, there were a few trees that made some shade.
She let her body fall, quite unceremoniously, under the tree. She fell to her knees to catch her breath. The hot sand burned her fingers and got into her new clothes and her shoes.
If the sand was this hot under the shade she wondered how hot it was in direct sunlight.
She wasn’t sure when her eyes started to feel heavy but she had fallen asleep before she knew it, with her back pressed against the uncomfortable trunk of the palm tree and her hands and knees buried in the hot sand.
She dreamt of a man crying in a cave. The cave was huge, it made the one she had just run out of look undersized in comparison. It smelled very earthy but it also smelled of pomegranate. She watched as the man screamed and sobbed while sitting on what looked like a throne made of obsidian. There was an empty throne next to him, it was made of wood but looked just as beautiful as its obsidian counterpart.
The wooden throne had pomegranates, flowers, and vines carved into it. The vines wrapped around the armrests and lead to the head of the throne where they all intertwined to create the top of the throne.
Wednesday made her way to the throne running her fingers over the carvings and indents in the wood.
When her fingers went over the largest of the flowers carved into the back of the throne the man stopped crying.
He took his head out of his hands and started looking around before making direct eye contact with Wednesday.
His eyes were yellow.
He reached a hand out to her but she woke up before he could touch her.
When she woke up it was night but the full moon provided enough light for her to get a good look at her surroundings.
The tide has risen while she was asleep but it wasn't close enough for her to feel perturbed. She only had 2 things to worry about right now, one was finding shelter and the other was finding fresh water.
At first glance, there wasn’t really anywhere that could be used as a good shelter.
And the cliff surrounded the beach completely with no way out unless she wanted to rock climb so that meant she would have to find a way to purify the salt water. Sadly there was nothing that could hold the water so even if she managed to start a fire there was nothing to hold the boiling water.
She would have the same problem with solar desalination, there was no clean container to hold the water.
Maybe there was more to worry about than she previously thought.
And as if the universe itself wanted to add to her list of predicaments the full moon started slowly turning a bright menacing red.
But she couldn’t panic, panic killed more people than anything else on the planet.
Plus there was no way the oracle would get her away from Enid just to let her die on a random beach in the middle of nowhere.
There had to be something significant about this beach, something she just hadn’t noticed yet.
Walking around the cliff to look for anything proved to be a complete waste of time, and digging in the sand randomly hoping for anything useful to just pop up would be a waste of energy. So she decided to go back to the tree and think about her next move.
Once again she fell asleep, but this time she didn’t dream. She just heard someone calling out her name.
“Wednesday!”
“Wednesday!”
“Addams wake up! She knows where you are!”
“Are you sure she can hear me Delphi?”
“I told you this might not work Tyler.”
“WAKE UP!”
Wednesday startled awake immediately started looking around.
It was still night and the moon was still red but the tide had gone out.
A bunch of tide pools had formed, some very small with very little movement and some slightly larger with a lot more life in them.
But from one tide pool, a little orange light moved around frantically in circles.
She cautiously approached the tide pool, the last thing she needed it some kind of magic sea horse spraying acid on her.
The closer she got to the tidepool the more frantically the light moved around.
When she finally got to the pool she saw a small golden fish swimming in the pool. The fish glowed brightly and its light tinted the water in the pool making it seem like a small pool of gold adorned with golden algae and seaweed.
Clearly, the fish didn’t enjoy the pool as much as she did though.
“Do you want to get out?” she asked, her voice raspy from just waking up moments ago.
“Oh gods, I'm actually going insane. I’m talking to a fish, what’s ne-”
Her small rant was cut off by a spray of water hitting her directly in the eye, “Ow! You little shit!”
Wednesday was then hit by the sudden realization that the fish had just shot water in her eye.
“Wait, did you do that?”
The fish swam around in a circle as if taking accountability for its actions.
“You can understand me?”
The fish swam in a circle again.
“Are you the sea goddess fish?”
Another circle, “If I get you out could you take me to her?”
The fish starts swimming in fast circles.
“Alright give me a moment to figure something out.”
Wednesday looked around for something to hold the fish in while she took it back to the ocean but there was nothing.
So she just scooped some of the water from the pool into her hands, “Here, I know it’s not the best way but it’s the only idea I have right now.”
Wednesday wasn’t exactly sure how to describe how the fish looked but if he looked almost displeased. She didn’t even know fish could look displeased until now.
Nonetheless, she scooped the ungrateful fish into her hands and carefully placed him back into the sea.
“Ok, now it’s your turn to help me. How are you going to get me to the palace?”
The fish suddenly swam away, its golden light fading bit by bit underneath the deep blue before fading entirely.
Then it came back faster than it had disappeared, its small light growing brighter and brighter the more speed it gained.
The golden body of the fish grew each time its light grew brighter, when the fish got back to Wednesday it was about the size of a horse. It stopped close enough to let Wednesday approach it but deep enough into the sea that it was still well submerged.
“Do you want me to get on?”
The fish let out a deep vibrating noise but didn’t move so she just assumed that it was a yes.
After she swam out to the fish and got onto its back it dove underwater, she panicked at first but quickly realized that the fish wouldn’t go to all that trouble just to kill her so she took a deep breath.
It smelled like salt and fish obviously, but also lavender for some reason.
She gazed around at her surroundings and saw schools of small brightly colored fish swimming around even brighter coral. Dolphins were swimming around playing together, sharks hunting in the distance and they even passed by the ruin of a sunken ship. Honestly, she could see surprisingly well for being underwater.
She wondered if it was a side effect from the fish.
After admiring her surroundings Wednesday looked up and saw they were approaching the palace.
Now she just had to convince the isolated ocean goddess to let her stay.
Great.
