The Pit
Born under a cursed moon, that’s what the normies always whispered. Wednesday Friday Addams was born under a cursed moon.
It was Friday the 13th of October and a full red moon dominated the night sky.
Her family had traveled all night to escape the mob that chased them away from their homeland. Of course, nothing could truly kill an Addams for good, even if you buried them they would claw their way out of the earth.
So they did the second best thing, they locked them up. In a prison, deep beneath the earth where no one could hear or see them again. They said the Addams were damned, that no God could even have any of them in their favor. In reality, they feared their power, a blessed Addams could level cities, flood towns, and take down mountains with one breath. So they did whatever they could to weaken them.
They bound their wrists in chains long enough so they could wander around the pit they called home but short enough that none of them could hope to reach the exit. All the chains were connected to a giant boulder in the center of the pit, On the boulder, they carved runes to make the chains unbreakable and so the boulder could never be moved. There was a giant hole in the ceiling which was their only source of light. In the summer it provided them with warmth and in the winter they huddled into the corners as far as they could shield themselves from the snow. When it would rain they would all gather in the center to wash themselves, they had no privacy, no place of worship, no faith, and no hope. The Gods that used to favor them suddenly seemed to abandon them and there was no way out. In that prison, her father Gomez was born.
The others in the family always told Gomez he would have been blessed by the gods of knowledge and mischief, Davina and Kent if things were like they used to be. But her father didn’t need help from Gods. He was smart, always trying to learn as much as he could about the pit they were stuck in. How solid were the chains without the runes? Could the rocks around them chip? Were the rocks sharp? the family hoped he would be the one to free them from the prison one day. And they were correct, Gomez seduced the daughter of the prison guard not to get the family out but because he was in love.
The second he saw her it was like Eros himself shot an arrow at his heart. The guards would only ever patrol the hole on top of the pit and one day she showed up, Gomez always wondered what would compel a man to bring his daughter to gawk at a pit full of the damned, he would never know but he was so thankful he did. Gomez knew he had to belong to her so he did whatever he could to make her fall. He would yell at her poems, sonnets, and compliments. He would yell prayers to her on his knees covered in dirt and caked in mud and grime. And while she stood above him sometimes the sun would shine behind her just right and shroud her in its light, in those moments Gomez truly believed he was looking at a Goddess.
And fall she did it took time two years to be exact but in the end, she fell. Then they formed a plan, she would drop him the key to all of their chains from the top of the pit and they would all escape into the night, their path illuminated by the red moon. Then they could be together.
They all escaped, but barely. She had been followed to the pit by the man her father wanted her to marry. His name was Garrett his father was a rich merchant and his mother was a priestess, their union would have raised her family's standing significantly, and yet, she couldn’t bring herself to love him.
He was attentive and kind but obsessive, he would bring her a flower every day. A bright red rose with no thorns, he memorized her schedule so he could get it to her at the same time every day. To most it was sweet but to her, it was predictable and boring, then she met Gomez.
Her father brought her to see the pit one day “Take a good look at the lowest of us and reconsider how good you have it.” He’d told her, and when she looked down she saw people living, no not living. They were surviving with the bare minimum. Then she saw him, and Eros himself struck her with an arrow at that moment. It all would have gone perfectly if Garrett hadn’t found her, and when he saw what was happening he alerted the town, he yelled as loud as he could and knocked rocks together, and banged branches on trees until his throat was raw. Then he attacked Gomez while they were escaping and she had to kill him. She saw a sharp branch, a chunk that broke off from the ones Garrett used, and she stabbed him.
Her ex-finance’s blood dripping down her hands is what sealed her into the family, it’s what made her a true Addmas and in honor of her rebirth, she changed her name to Morticia. And on his body, she laid the bud of the flower that he had given her that day and kept the stem.
That same night seven years later and under the same red moon Wednesday was born. So yes, while to some she was born under a cursed moon to the Addams family Wednesday could not have been born on a more blessed day.
