Chapter 5
Tony 's frown had gotten deeper because of what Bucky told him . He needed to scan Steve for brain damage and maybe he should alert the best surgeons just in case and...
"Jarvis. Any damage, any news?" He asked his AI.Then Steve stirred and both men were instantly focused on the blonde.
"Jarvis?" Tony whispered.
"Captain Roger's vitals are good, sir. He should be awake by now." The AI informed them.
"So what's keeping him from opening his eyes?" Bucky wondered aloud.
"I 'm not sure, Mr Barnes. It seems captain Roger's brain is quite active."
Steve's brain was, indeed, active. He felt like he was caught and wandering around in an endless hall. He heard Bucky asking him to wake up, but he couldn't quite reach him.
"He moved, is he waking up?" A voice asked, footsteps coming closer. Steve felt something looming over him and felt his muscles lock as he felt a faint burning sensation in his head again. Was he still with hydra? What had they done to him? Was he still restrained?
"You hurting, Stevie?" The voice sounded worried. A cool weight was placed over the burns and soothed them a bit. Steve sighed in relief as the pain faded a bit.
"He sighed! He's probably in pain from the burns. Gosh Steve I'm so sorry."
Now he recognised the voice as Bucky.
"Buck." He tried to say. Something cold grabbed his hand.
"Welcome back to the world, Stevie. Now open them eyes."
But Steve kept getting lost in his mind.
He didn't know how long it was before he heard something again.
"Why isn't he waking up?" That was Tony. Impatient and worried as always. Why couldn't he wake up? That's what Steve wanted to know too.
"Maybe it's some kind of shock. He can obviously hear us. Maybe he just needs to calm down?" Bucky speculated, Steve heard the whirring of the metal arm and felt something cool take his hand again.
"Bucky." He tried again.
"I'm here Stevie. We're fine." Lips were pressed softly to Steve's hand. Steve's heart fluttered and he heard Jarvis give Tony a heads up about an increased heart rate. Steve wanted to move his head to smell the familiar scent of Bucky, but his head was so heavy that he couldn't manage it.
"Stevie. We're going crazy here. Try to give us a sign. Please tell me they haven't fried your brain from the first try." Bucky said, and there was a quiver in his voice. Steve frowned, why did Bucky sound so frightened? He then remembered yelling at Bucky that he loved him, who had been pressured by Shmidt to confess he loved Steve.
"He frowned." Bucky whispered, probably to Tony. "He worries about us, too."
"We're fine, Steve. All safe and sound. We just need you to wake up. Okay?"
A creak as Bucky shifted in his chair. Was he standing up? Steve's hand automatically tightened around the metal. There was a silence in the room.
" Y'need me to stay?" Buckys voice was so close and god Steve could smell his cologne and it threw him right back to Brooklyn and their tent during the war. He felt good, warm and safe.
"I'm going nowhere, stevie. I'm right here with you." A hand caressed his cheek, and Steve nuzzled the wrist of the hand doing it. He felt sleepy, as if a nap would do him good.
"Just relax." Bucky murmured"we'll be waiting."
