When it’s all gone, I love you
The gentle light from the moon glitters through the window of the shared room of Taco and Microphone. Mic has always had trouble sleeping, especially as of late. Her and Taco have been cuddled up in bed for a few hours but she cannot fall asleep no matter how hard she tries. She doesn’t really know why, she guesses her thoughts keep her awake. She stares up at the ceiling for hours and just thinks, wondering how many days she has wasted, how many nights she has drowned here. Just withering away time. She is afraid of whatever is beyond this simple life she has started with Taco. Though she knows this is just her mind messing with her. She shakes her head and takes a glance at the clock, it seems it’s already one in the morning. Mic groans and rubs her eyes, causing Taco’s eyes to blink open. Mic takes notice of this, “Oh shoot, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to wake you,” Taco gives a slight smile. “It is quite alright, is something the matter?” She’s noticed Mic has been a bit more stressed lately and wants to help any way she can. “I just.. Can’t sleep,” She thinks for a moment, “Hey, Taco, can I bring you somewhere?” Taco was a little confused, but she wants to make Mic happy, so she agrees.
Mic creaks open the door with Taco on her shoulders, as she’s still a little sleepy. She tiptoes through the halls, not wanting to wake anyone else. She heads towards a staircase that Taco hadn’t noticed before. Taco hasn’t really had the chance to explore, she still feels afraid to interact with the others, but Mic insisted she slept on an actual bed rather than her nest in the woods. They make their way up the stairs and as Mic opens the door Taco can feel the cool breeze of the night brush through her lettuce. They arrive on the roof, “Why did you take us up here?” Taco questions. “Well… I just needed some air,” Mic inhales sharply, “Oh and one other thing,” She grins up at taco and walks over to the edge of the roof.
Mic sets taco down next to her as she takes a seat. Taco is about to speak but Mic shushes her and points to the sky. It’s dark out and the sky is full of thousands of dazzling stars as the moon shines bright among them. “Isn’t it beautiful?” Mic says, with a sigh of relief. Taco stares a little longer before responding, “Yeah. Yeah it is.” Mic smiles and scoots closer to her hard shelled partner. Taco leans on Mic as they both appreciate nature, and the company of the other.
“I don’t intend this to be invasive, just out of curiosity, what’s been up with you lately, Mic?” Mic gets snapped back into reality by the sudden voice of Taco, she blinks for a few seconds before she processes what was said to her. “What do you mean?” Mic fidgets with her hands as Taco sighs, “You’ve just been a little… Off,” she gazes up at her, “Is everything okay? You know you can talk to me about anything, right? Oh, or is it because of me? If it is I am so incredibly sorry I don’t know what it was I would’ve done this time but-” Mic cuts her off by placing her hand on her head. “You’re rambling again,” Mic rubs her lettuce gently, “It’s not because of you, promise, I’ve just been… Thinking,” Mic turns her gaze back to the sky. “About… What?” Taco calmed down a little bit from before, but now worry is shown in her voice. “I don’t really know, a lot of things I guess. There’s so much to do in life and I’ve felt like I’ve already wasted all of mine. Don’t get me wrong, I love spending my time with you, I just feel like there’s… So much more I could’ve done,” she pauses for a moment and looks back at the sky, “Sometimes I feel like the moon. I shine bright just like all the stars around me, but yet, I am not one of them. It feels like I’ve been doing something wrong my entire life. I try so hard and seem to never end up accomplishing anything,” Mic looks back down and notices Taco’s sad expression, “Well, I will admit something. You are one of the only things in my life that I feel like I’m doing right. We’ve had our ups and downs, but, I love you, Taco. You give me a sense of belonging in this world I’ve never felt I’ve quite fit in before. I just feel comforted being around you.” She lets out a slight giggle, “To think of how far we’ve come, It’s a little funny to remember how we used to be. But, if that’s what got us here, I wouldn’t change a thing.” Taco smiles at this, she’s not the best at comforting with words, so it is good to know her presence alone is of some help. “I love you too, Mic.” She pauses for a moment to think, “You know, the thing about being the moon, you may not be the same as all the stars, but that just makes you twice as special. I mean, all the stars in the sky are beautiful, but the moon always catches my eye.” Mic’s eyes soften and she gives taco a gentle hug. They hold that embrace for a couple minutes until interrupted.
“This may be a little random but… Would you like to dance?” Taco asks, rather awkwardly. Mic smiles and takes Taco by the hand, lifting her up, “Of course.” They move towards the center of the roof and press closer. The moon shining down on them felt like a spotlight, just for them. They were the center of each other’s universes and right now they are the only beings to exist. All worries wash away, even if it’s just for this moment, as they move around in this embrace under the night sky. They know everything will be okay, as long as they stick together. And they don’t ever want this moment to end.
