Rosa enters the bullpen and sits down at her desk, the post-it note on her desk reminding her that the new captain would be arriving today. She spares a quick glance around to see what the other officers think about someone coming in and replacing Holt. Jake’s body radiates anger and Rosa feels bad for him; Captain Holt is the father Jake never had and he couldn’t understand how easily he was replaceable.
Terry quickly calls a meeting before the captain arrives, and everyone swarms into the meeting room. Obviously, he went over how everyone needs to give them a chance before making any assumptions or opinions. Jake makes sure to remind everyone on how he was planning on doing to do everything he could to make them feel the opposite, and Boyle, obviously, agrees.
Rosa had barely been back at her desk for half an hour when the lift doors open and the floor goes silent. Turning around Rosa is met with the sight of Captain America stepping out of the lift. The man smiles a goofy smile to the detectives staring at him and strides over to them, an over-excited man-child jumping him before he could get the chance to introduce himself.
“Oh my God, you’re Captain America! I’m Jake Peralta, your number one fan. Oh my God, this is so cool!” Jake seems to realise how stupid he appears and coughs before reintroducing himself in a more professional manner. Rosa tries her best not to laugh as Jake fumbles his introduction, no one else stepping up to help him. She’d met Steve multiple times in the past and seeing her friends fawn over him was entertaining, she’d been a little excited to meet him for the first time but managed to maintain a cool expression. Although, she had been dating her girlfriend for a while and already heard plenty of embarrassing storied about the avengers.
Rosa brings herself out of her memory to hear all the detectives surrounding Steve, asking him questions about being an Avenger and what he’s doing in the bullpen. Taking in his overwhelmed expression she knows he isn’t going to make it to the office without just a little bit of help. She sighs before standing up and bringing out the voice she saves to scare Boyle.
“Alright! Give Captain America a chance to settle in. I’m sure he’ll answer all your questions in due course.” Rosa makes sure to keep a sharp expression when shouting to the team, even when Jake pouted about not being able to get his badge signed. Steve himself still looked a little baffled at having the attention focused on him, but he managed to get out an introduction without too much hassle.
“Thank you detective.” Steve nods in Rosa’s direction and she sends her own small nod back, a mutual sign that they’ll hide how they know each other for now. “As you may know, I am Steve Rogers - although some you may know me as Captain America. I am here to give back to the community as your new police Captain, not for any Avengers work. I know you all miss Captain Raymond Holt, and I understand I have large shoes to fill, but I hope to do my best until he is reinstated. Thank you. Detective,” Steve looks over at Rosa, “a word in my office please.” Steve turned and begins to walk towards the office door.
Before he opens the office door, and Rosa goes to follow him, but before they can reach the office Terry speaks up. “I don’t mean to be rude Captain, but I am the Lieutenant for this precinct. Lieutenant Terry Jeffords.” Terry puts his hand out to shake it and Steve shakes it with a warm smile.
“Nice to meet you. If its alright, I want to talk to Rosa first.” Steve turns and enters the office, leaving the group in the precinct a chance to gather their thoughts and process what just happened.
“You called me Rosa.” While her voice was stern, Steve knows she is more concerned about what the current situation means for their friendship and Natasha’s relationship. Steve winces and sets his bag down on the chair.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to slip up. I’ll tell them I did research on the precinct, who knows maybe it’ll scare them or something. Now, tell me about the team.” Steve stands at the window with his hands clasped behind his back, and Rosa eyes his stance with a smile. He was more like Holt than she originally thought. She stands next to him and begins pointing each person out, offering a quick summary of them as she went.
“Detective Jake Peralta: he’s a big fan of you. He wants to help but he can be a little childish, he’s a good detective thought.
“Detective Charles Boyle; Jake’s biggest fan and he likes to share too many details about this life. He does good work though.
“Sargent Amy Santiago: Jake’s wife and she works with the uniforms downstairs. She’s a bit dorky but dedicated to being the youngest female captain.
“Lieutenant Terry Jeffords: a real family man. He cracks down and works hard most of the time but he’s got a fun side. He’ll occasionally refer to himself in third person but just go with it.
“Hitchcock and Scully” gross, overly sexual, and lazy. They’ll occasionally produce some work but they just come to nap.”
Rosa turns to face Steve and he nods in understanding before smirking and pointing at Rosa. “Tell me about Detective Rosa Diaz.”
“Rosa Diaz, will punch a printer if it doesn’t work, will punch you if you annoy her too much, and will fuck your best friend.” Rosa watches as Steve’s face turns red at the thought of Rosa and Natasha and she can’t help but let out a laugh. “Sorry Cap, I had to. You gave me the opportunity.” She lets herself out the office, leaving Steve to get over himself, and she’s instantly met with Charles and Jake.
“Rosa! Tell me everything.” The two instantly start bombarding Rosa with a whole range of questions and she tunes them out for a little bit, letting her mind wander to what she was going to eat that night and if she should try and get out of the city for the weekend. Once the two slow down enough for her to get a word in she holds up her hand and starts speaking.
“He just wanted to know about you guys and what your skills are. And no, he didn’t talk about any of the other avengers, sorry.” Rosa shrugs and moves over to her desk, the two men following her and towering over her as she sits down. Before they can ask any more questions another voice spoke up from over by the lift.
“He didn’t even mention me.” Rosa looks up in time to see Jake and Charles freak out at the sight of the red head who has a sad pout on her face. Rosa barely manages to conceal a surprised smile as Natasha walks closer to the trio.
“Oh my God! How long were you there?” It takes Jake a moment to realise the situation he was in before he suddenly turns to Charles and squeals into the other man’s face, “Oh my God Charles, Black Widow and Captain America are in our precinct right now! I need to go find Amy, oh my God!” Jake runs off and is soon back with a very confused Terry and Amy, gesturing to the red head with wild swings of his arms.
The two stare at Natasha who gives them an awkward wave before staring at Charles, who hadn’t moved from his spot next to Rosa’s desk, until he slowly shuffles away. They all keep their eyes on Rosa and Natasha as they have a quick conversation.
“He didn’t mention me at all?” Natasha keeps a neutral expression when talking to Rosa, they have completely different personalities when there’s no one else around them, but right now they were being watched by everyone on the floor. Natasha also hadn’t had the chance to ask how much her friends knew about their relationship and she didn’t want to overstep any boundaries.
“Well, he mentioned this person called Natasha, but that’s not an avenger right? I mean, what avenger is called Natasha.” Rosa has a teasing smile and out of the corner of her eye she can see Jake waving his arms in a warning signal and it only fuels her desire to mess with the coworkers. Before she can say anything else Steve walks out of his office and calls Natasha over, and Rosa lets her go without any problems.
The second Steve had gone back into his office with Natasha Jake is sauntering over to Rosa’s desk and turns to Charles, Amy, and Terry.
“Captain America called Rosa ‘Rosa’ before she went into his office, but she never told him her name. She called him ‘Steve’ instead of his actual name - Captain America. This suggests she knows him from somewhere where he isn’t called Captain America. She was mean to the Black Widow, which is rude but also suggests they’ve met before. So, obviously, Rosa is an avenger.”
Rosa watches Jake talk with a raised eyebrow, mildly impressed with his theory but not enough to take the bait and mess with him some more.
“You said he was good, Diaz, but you didn’t tell me he was that good.” Steve stands in the doorway of his office, Natasha standing next to him. Jake whips round to face Steve excitedly like a little kid.
“Did I get it right? Is Rosa an Avenger?” Steve seems content to let Jake run with the idea, but Natasha nips the idea the bud before Jake can spread the rumour around the entirety of Brooklyn.
“No.” Natasha’s voice is firm and Jake’s expression deflates, and Rosa feels a little bad for him. Natasha ignores him and faces Rosa instead with an impressed look. “Did you seriously sat that to Steve?” Rosa’s own face lights up and a satisfied smile spreads across her face as she remembers the comment she’d made to Steve about their sex life.
“I had to, it was the perfect opportunity.” Both woman laugh at Steve’s embarrassment, the man himself just shaking his head like a tired dad. After a few seconds Nat gasps and looks to Rosa with a concerned expression.
“Did he say language?” Rosa can’t contain her laughter anymore and the two of women laugh to themselves over the inside Joke, Steve standing there flabbergasted and at a loss of what to do. “Steve! She said a bad language word, why didn’t you tell her off?” Steve just sighs again and let the two women have their moment before Terry steps in and gets control of the situation.
“Right, everyone listen up!" Terry turns to the uniformed officers who had looked up in alarm at the shout. “Not you guys, the detectives and those two Avengers.” Once the uniform officers are back to focusing on their own work Terry turns to the group that have collected themselves in front of him. “Clearly Diaz knows these two. She’s allowed five minutes to explain and we can ask question and then we’ll move on.”
Terry stares at Rosa and she sighs before looking at the two avengers for approval. “I’m dating Natasha. You have 4 minutes and 57 seconds to ask questions.”
“How did you meet?” Amy’s the first to speak, and Natasha answers the question. She shoots Rosa a knowing look so subtle the other’s don’t notice it before she starts speaking in a slow drawl.
“Rosa was arresting some guy who had this technology S.H.I.E.L.D was interested in. My friend sent a team to go get him so then they brought Rosa in to share knowledge, and my friend ended up meeting Rosa and then she later called me to set us up. Then she called Rosa and then we-” Terry interrupts Natasha’s overly detailed story realising she’s deliberately taking as long as possible to avoid any more questions.
“Okay, we get the story. I just don’t get why you didn’t tell us, Rosa, I thought we were friends?” Terry doesn’t even try and hide the hurt in his voice and Rosa feels a little guilty. Over the past few years she’s gotten closer to her team, and she’s starting to think maybe it’s not so bad to invite them into her personal life.
“I haven’t told you guys every time I’ve gone on a date, and I knew you’d freak out if I told you I was dating an Avenger.” Rosa shrugs and and checks her watch, Jake chiming in to the conversation as she does so.
“We freak out every time you tell us you’re dating someone.” Charles nods in agreement with Jake, who has a thinking face on. His well-contained excitement is suddenly released and he looks between Steve and Rosa with his eyebrows furrowed. “Wait, how do you know Captain America? Have you seen the Avenger’s secret base?” Jake lowers his voice as he asks the last question, leaning in slightly. Natasha chuckle slightly as the image of a secret headquarters the avengers meet in, and Steve smiles slightly as he answers the question .
“We call it the compound, and yes she’s been a couple times. Now, I think there are actual criminals you need to arrest so get back to work. It may be my first day here but I’m not new to being the boss.” Steve sends the team back to their desks, and Rosa walks Natasha to the lift. She gives her a quick kiss and Natasha reminds the team to watch their language before she leaves and Rosa can finally sit down at her desk and relax.
