Prologue
Due to Tonowari's job giving him a position across the sea, the Mekayina family leaves their life in Awa'atlu and moves to the mainland, where they meet up with Ronal's sister, Nìwa'eng, who moved there in her youth and started her own family. Ao'nung and Tsireya meet up with their cousins Aokuna, Syura, the twins, and their old friend Rotxo after years of not seeing each other. They quickly hit it off and became inseparable, just like when they were younger. The Metkayina finally discover that their family runs an underground street racing circuit, and that's when they're introduced to the Sullys, who are one of the reigning champions of the ring. Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Kiri aren't too welcoming of the outsiders, but with a little convincing, they finally give the Metkayina a chance. Despite their initial skepticism, the Sullys are impressed by their driving skills. Neteyam and Syura are known for their chemistry together, and while they only dated once, they're still friends with benefits, which makes Ao'nung question whether or not he has a chance -- until he's introduced to his cousin's girlfriend, Nakoma.

Tonowari has a military background; Ronal is a military wife, and they have three children: Ao'nung, Tsireya, and Manaia. Tonowari is Samoan, and Ronal is Puerto Rican, which makes their children mixed islanders. They speak more spanish in the house because of Ronal, but they know some samoan from their father—not enough to have full conversations, though, but they can understand certain phrases.
- Tonowari: 45
- Ronal: 43
- Ao'nung: 21 (soon to be 22)
- Tsireya: 19
- Manaia: 6
Nìwa'eng is Ronal's older sister, and she is married to her husband, Peylo, who is Caribbean (Crucian/Puerto Rican). They speak fluent spanish and english, and their children have accents even though they grew up on the mainland. Their youngest son, Zìtrea, is deaf, so the family knows sign language. Aokuna is less fluent since he doesn't take the time to learn it, and Peylo sometimes gets certain wording wrong.
Peylo's family ran a street racing group back then, and it has since grown. He is retired, but his children now run the ring alongside his close friends. Syura is known as “Lust” on the track because of her reckless driving style and gorgeous cars that make her stand out. Aokuna dropped out years ago when he met his fiancee on the track.
- Peylo: 50
- Nìwa'eng: 47
- Aokuna: 26
- Syura: 21 (younger than Ao'nung)
- Tali and Te'san: 16
- Zìtrea: 10
Syura and Ao'nung were partners in crime when they were younger, always causing trouble when they visited. And Tsireya and Syura were inseparable because they were the only girls in their families (at the time). The twins were just babies when they visited, so they don't remember either of them.
Rotxo is 21 and is mixed hispanic and samoan, and he lives with his dominican grandmother on the mainland. He only speaks spanish around his grandmother and when he's around his “aunt,” Nìwa'eng. His father was samoan and was close friends with Tonowari, but both his parents lost their lives in a car crash, and he was taken to the mainland to be raised by his grandmother. Rotxo sometimes participates in the races, but he's more of a sideline guy who works on cars.
Neytiri is Jamaican, and Jake is American (obvi..), so their kids are mixed race. Jake is a veteran who lost his legs in the war and wears prosthetics. Neteyam and Tuktirey look more like their mother, Lo'ak is lightskin madness, and Kiri was adopted and is white like Jake. Lo'ak has vitiligo on his hands and torso.
Neteyam was introduced to the racing ring by Syura when they were dating in high school and has made a reputation for himself. Kiri is more of a show/cargirl and doesn't race herself, but has won one before. Lo'ak doesn't drive, but he does help work on some of the cars.
- Jake: 46
- Neytiri: 42
- Netayam: 22
- Kiri: 22
- Lo'ak: 19
- Tuktirey: 15
Neteyam shares an apartment with his ex-girlfriend Syura, and even though both Kiri and Lo'ak still live with their parents, they come over almost every day and sometimes spend the night (weeks) over. Syura's girlfriend, Nakoma, travels for work but comes over occasionally. Rotxo only goes over if Kiri and Lo'ak are there, which is... almost every day.
Aokuna has a fiancée and isn't always around, but he is Syura's personal ATM.
The Sullys and Pamestos are very close (plus Rotxo) and see each other like family. Kiri is always “borrowing” Syura's stuff, Lo'ak and the twins are always bickering about something, Neteyam sometimes goes to Aokuna for advice but doesn't bother him too much because he has his own life, Tuktirey hangs out with the twins after school, and everyone just adores Zìtrea.
