Leaving You Without Saying Goodbye Hurts Me The Most, My Dear
He should've known something was wrong. He should've known something bad would happen when Sapnap asked to talk with Quackity. He should've heard it when Quackity yelled out his name when Dream and Sapnap cornered him. He should've seen Selene, Tubbo and Ranboo's daughter, as she snuck away from her family to save his husband when no one else heard Quackity's desperate plea.
He should've known.
He should've listened.
He shouldn't have let him go.
But he did. Now look at where he's standing. Cold. Sad. Angry. Alone.
Oh, how he'd kill to light a fire. To burn the whole damn place down. To watch as the country around him exploded.
Karl and Sapnap made Kinoko Kingdom, betraying Quackity in the process. Strike one.
They made Quackity lonely and sad. And Wilbur doesn't like seeing his beloved duck sad. Strike two.
Finally, the same two men invited them to this country and now, because of Sapnap's stupidity, Quackity went missing. Strike three.
Three strikes and you're out.
It's only fair. Out of all of Quackity's lovers, Wilbur was the only one that didn't leave him traumatized. All he really did was die. And go insane. And blow up L'manburg. And leave him all alone to raise Tilin and Tallulah. Quackity had every reason to act the way he did when Wilbur first arrived in Las Nevadas. The man had every fucking right.
He sighed, his hand absentmindedly reaching into his pocket, looking for his lighter. The urge to burn everything down only grew.
"Wilbur! Are you with us?"
He blinked. He looked around him. He wasn't in Kinoko Kingdom; he was in Las Nevadas. More specifically, him and the others surrounding him were in their room. His and Quackity's room.
"I am, I am..." Wilbur mumbled. His gaze landed on a picture frame that must've been tipped over in a rush, like someone was trying to hide it. He picked it up and when he saw the photo, his eyes were widened as hundreds of emotions passed through him in a blur. A tear was about to fall. He wouldn't let it. No way in fucking hell.
"What are you looking at?" Fundy asked.
"Nothing!" He shoved the photo into a random drawer on the desk.
"When I went up here to get Quackity, he did something like that. But it wasn't a photo; it was a letter." Sam noted. "I never asked him what it was about."
Wilbur looked at Sam, then back to the drawer. Sure enough, there was a paper underneath the photo. He took it out of its hiding place, unfolding it carefully. He felt an odd texture as his thumb brushed against the paper. Quackity was crying when he wrote this.
"Maybe if you helped Quackity, we wouldn't be in this situation right now," Tubbo mumbled.
Wilbur glared at Tubbo as he spoke slowly. "What did you just say?"
"If you helped Quackity in the first place, none of this would be happening! My mom and daughter wouldn't have been fucking kidnapped!"
"And your solution is to blame me for it? Quackity is my fucking husband, in case you forgot. You aren't the only one in pain right now, Tubbo."
"He has a point there, Tubbo, whether you admit or not. Now, before any more arguments happen, can you both just calm down for a moment? Wilbur, let me see the letter," Sam said. He took the letter from Wilbur's hands and the two read it to themselves.
"'Wilbur, Sam, if either of you are reading this, I am either missing or dead. Hopefully, it isn't the latter. I wish I didn't have to write this in the first place, but with the danger of Dream still out of jail and Schlatt's recent revival, it's better to be safe than sorry. If I am dead, the both of you and Slime have control over what happens to Las Nevadas. Tell Tubbo that he's always welcome to bring his family here. I may not be able to do it, but I know you will keep them safe like you have with me. Wilbur, I love you so much. Remember that. Sam, thank you... for everything. You're the best father I could ever ask for. — Quackity'."
They looked at each other, then back at the letter.
"I'm still holding onto the hope that he's still alive. He's already lost me to death; I don't want to lose him the same way," Wilbur decided.
After a few moments of silence, Ranboo spoke up. "So.. what do we do now?"
Wilbur finally had it in him to put the paper down. "The only thing we can do. We go save them."
Quackity looked at Selene, who untied the ropes that were formerly pressed into her skin for what felt like the fifth time in a row.
"Selene," he whispered, "you should go. Run away. They're only using you as bait. I'm the one they want. Go. Go to your family, they need you."
"But what about you? You have your family also! Let me just untie your ropes, just let me get you out of here too, please!" Selene begged, tears almost getting to her eyes.
:You're still a kid. I'm not dragging any more kids into my mess. Not this time. Just go, I'll be fine!"
"Are you sure...?"
"...no. But that doesn't matter. Just go while you still can, okay?"
"Okay... But promise me that if you find a way out, you'll use that and get as far away from here as you can."
"Okay. Now hurry, Selene. I don't think you have much time."
Selene let her hands move from Quackity's ropes to the floor as she picked herself up. She waved a small goodbye and hurried away from the small, dusty cavern and saw the bright afternoon sunlight once more.
"Selene? Quackity?" Tubbo called into the deep forest, his stress only getting worse when he heard his same voice call back to him.
Ranboo placed a hand on their platonic husband's shoulder. "We're going to find them, Tubbo. We have to."
"Thanks, Ranboo."
Together, the two of them and the rest of the small rescue team continued looking for the two missing people.
When Tubbo was ready to lose all hope in finding either one of them, he heard a familiar girl's voice. "Selene?"
"Bee? Is that— BEE!" The young girl grinned when she saw Tubbo, running to her father.
"Y-You're alive! Selene, I thought we lost you forever!"
"I am! Don't worry, I don't think I'll be missing like this again for a while."
Wilbur walked up behind the two. "If Selene's here, then... where's Quackity?"
The small enderman hybrid stared at the ground, refusing to meet either of their eyes. "He... he made me go ahead. I don't know if he's safe. He told me that he'd leave once he found the chance to, but..."
"No... no, this can't be happening. No... I just got him back..." Wilbur was on the verge of breaking down.
"Mr. Wilbur? When the smiley mask man first took us, he gave Quackity a photo. Then he mentioned Bee and... what were their names... Tilin and Tallulah? I don't know who they are, but they seemed pretty important to him."
Wilbur's eyes widened. "Dream... Dream threatened Quackity with our children? When I see his stupid face, I'm going to kill him."
"What do you mean, 'our children'?" Phil asked, confused. Him and the rest of the group finally reached the two.
Wilbur looked up at Sam. "Do you think I should tell them?"
"It's what Quackity would want... at least in this situation."
The revived man nodded and took a deep breath. "Quackity and I have twins named Tilin and Tallulah."
"Since when?" Phil asked. He knew their relationship, but... kids?
"Before I blew up L'manburg."
And when the country was blown up, Quackity was forced to take care of two dragon hybrids on his own. For months. Quackity had every reason to lash out at Wilbur when they met after his revival.
Quackity yelled at Wilbur, "Asshole! You expect me to be nice to you after you fucking blew up L'manburg, died, and left me to take care of our children on my own? Pinche pendejo."
"We... we had kids?"
"Yes. Twins. Tilin and Tallulah. Tallulah looks so much like you, Wil..."
Quackity was on the ground now, tears running down his cheeks.
"I'm so, so sorry, Quackity..."
"I tried moving on after you died. Had a relationship with Karl and Sapnap. They made a country without me. They left and betrayed me, just like everyone else."
"I'm here now, duckling. You won't have to go through that anymore."
"Do you... do you want to see what they look like?"
"Y-Yeah? I mean, I guess..."
Quackity wiped his tears with his sleeve, took out a photo from his pocket and showed it to Wilbur.
"Holy shit, you were right. Tallulah does look like me. And Tilin looks like you... at least, before L'manburg you."
The duck hybrid let out a small laugh. And despite the tears and the dark circles under his eyes, Wilbur couldn't help but admit to himself that Quackity looked cute in the moment.
"Wait, Selene, you said Dream threatened Quackity with the twins?" Sam asked.
"Yeah, why?"
The creeper hybrid's eyes widened. "Then we need to go back to Las Nevadas. Now."
Everyone followed Sam and Wilbur as they walked through Las Nevadas.
"Where are we going?" Tommy asked.
Wilbur had been on edge since they left the forest. It just so happened that Tommy talking was enough to make him snap. He turned to face Tommy. “Shut the fuck up, Tommy. I’m not dealing with you right now, okay? My husband is missing, and now my only concern is whether or not my children are alive. I already fucked it up with Fundy; I’m not repeating that mistake. And if I find out that they’re missing—or worse, dead—I will blow up the entire fucking SMP.”
He stormed off, getting farther away from the others and closer to where Tilin and Tallulah were.
When he arrived, he looked all over the room, trying to find his kids. Realizing that they were missing, a loud, bloodcurdling “DREAM!” was heard throughout the country. Wilbur didn’t know when he got in and didn’t really care, but Dream was now standing in the doorway of the room.
“You little—! Where the FUCK ARE MY HUSBAND AND CHILDREN?” Wilbur grabbed Dream by his throat and held him up against the wall nearest to them.
Dream only laughed and smiled.
“You think this is funny? If you don’t tell me where they are, I’ll fucking kill you. I’ll blow up the whole SMP.”
Dream’s smile turned into a manic grin. “You can’t do it.”
“Just tell me where they are, goddamnit!”
“I don’t have them. I don’t know where they are.”
“What do you mean, you don’t have them? Selene just escaped from where you kept her and Quackity.”
“I gave them to someone else.”
“Who?”
“Some white bear-looking creature wearing a vest. His name was Cucurucho, I believe. Said he was working with some organization called the Federation. We first met in the forest. He probably server hopped his way here since I didn’t see him in the list.”
“Get to the point already, or do I have to remind you that I have a sword pressed to your throat?”
“Okay, okay. Relax. He only wanted Quackity and your kids for… something. All I know is that he mentioned Quackity from being the Federation.”
“Why did it take you that long to say?”
“So I could do this. Punz, now!”
Before Wilbur could process what was happening; he let out a small gasp as he felt a cold blade pierce his skin from behind. It went through the same hole he forced Phil to stab him in, the glowing diamond sword covered with his own blood.
And as he slipped from consciousness, he could only imagine the message his family received.
Wilbur Soot was slain by Punz
Quackity slowly opened his eyes. He heard two voices.
Were they…?
When the two voices noticed that Quackity was awake, they rushed to him.
“Papa!”
“Tilin? Tallulah? Is— Is that you…? What are you…?” Quackity got up, staring at the two dragon hybrids. Yup. Those are definitely his kids.
“Papa, do you know where we are? It’s scary,” Tallulah mumbled. Both her and her twin had fear in their eyes.
He wasn’t sure why, but it made him feel guilty. He held the two close as he looked around. It was all white and blank until he noticed two things. One, the bars in the doorway, probably in front of the door since it partially covered the window. They were in a prison cell. Fun. Two, there was a logo. The Federation.
Oh no. He knew that logo. No.
No.
NO!
All his memories linked to the Federation flooded back into his mind. “No…” he whispered.
“Papa? Papa, are you okay?” The twins no longer fear, but worry in their eyes.
He grabbed their hands and held onto them tightly. “Tilin, Tallulah, we need to get out of here. We need to leave this place, as soon as possible.”
Just as he finished speaking, two faceless workers and a white bear-looking creature with a smile on its face were in front of the door. Quackity held his kids even closer. And without any warning, the two faceless were getting closer to the three.
“Don’t fucking touch them, Cucurucho. You don’t get to hurt them the same way you did to me and every other hybrid kid the Federation experimented on,” Quackity spat.
The white bear’s smiled only grew. He tossed a book at the duck hybrid, who opened it almost immediately. “‘Then we’ll kill you if we have to’? What else do you want from me? You’ve already tested on me.”
Cucurucho gave him another book. “‘Your kids’,” Quackity read in a whisper, causing him to hold the twins even closer to him. “No! I’m not letting you use them. You don’t know what I’ve been through, Cucurucho, just to protect them and myself from you and this stupid Federation group.”
If tears were forming in his eyes, he didn’t care. All he knew was that his kids were being threatened. It was enough to trigger his parental instinct since he attracted Cucurucho, accidentally letting go of his kids in the process.
A mistake he’d vow to never repeat. Ever.
Quackity suddenly froze and watched in shock as the faceless workers grabbed Tallulah and Tilin and took them away from him, the siblings desperately flapping their small dragon wings in a feeble attempt to free themselves and escape the tight hold on their bodies that was trapping them, almost like birds stuck in a birdcage. No matter what any of the three did, they’d end up being taken by the Federation. He was aware of their surroundings and that the workers and Cucurucho had the advantages here. Quackity was still frozen, still held back by the white bear behind him. All he could do was watch.
It made him feel small.
Weak.
Useless.
He wasn’t in the right state of mind to understand the thoughts rushing through his head nor why they lingered only burning a dark hole in his memories, forcing him to believe that he was in the wrong, that he was the sole cause of every bad thing to happen to him, whether it was true or not.
He shouldn’t have gone with Sapnap. He should’ve stayed with Wilbur. His own husband who’s probably blaming himself for his lover and kids’ disappearances. Quackity didn’t blame him for that, though. He’d never blame Wilbur for something that was out of his control. Yet he still blamed the man for blowing up L’manburg, forcing him to take care of Tilin and Tallulah on his own for what felt like years but was only a few months. And even though it was easy to blame Wilbur, he knew that he also played a role in all of that. He was part of the reason Wilbur went insane and blew up L’manburg. It all led back to him, one way or another.
He blinked, returning to the harsh reality of the present. His kids would be separated from him, no matter how hard he’d try. He sighed, turned his head to face Cucurucho and, with defeat in his voice, asked, “Is there anything else you want from me? You’ve taken me away from everyone I care about. Just kill me already. Please.”
Cucurucho responded with a no then gave him one final book. “We still need you. Welcome back to the Federation, Quackity.”
Wilbur Soot was slain by Punz
When they saw the death message appear on their communicators, Tommy was the first one to react.
“Wilbur’s… dead?” he asked Phil, his eyes filled with fear.
“And his name isn’t in the whitelist, either,” Techno pointed out.
“Techno! Jesus Christ, stop doing that,” Phil hissed.
“Sorry. But he really isn’t there. Check for yourself.” He handed Phil a green communicator.
“This is Dream’s… where’d you get it?"
“Took it from him when we were in the prison while he was asleep because I was bored.”
“And he didn’t notice?”
“Nope,” the piglin hybrid said, popping the “p”.
“Hm.”
“So, was I right?”
“Yeah.”
“Does that mean Wilbur’s gone for good?” Tommy asked.
“No, but it’ll take years to find what server he’s in. I was lucky to find this one in two or three months.”
“Oh… can you try to? Please, Phil?”
The crow hybrid sighed. “I’ll try.”
Suddenly, a crow landed on Phil’s shoulder. It cawed, about to tell Phil something but was immediately attacked by a strange purple crow that was eerily similar to Kristin’s crow form, but the two brothers assumed that it was only a coincidence. The two crows left and Sam walked up to Phil.
“Can you check if Quackity’s name shows?”
“Yeah, just give me a minute…” the crow hybrid mumbled. As he looked through, a frown appears on his face.
“Quackity’s gone from the list also, isn’t he? Your face only goes like that when something’s wrong.”
When Phil looked up, he found the voice belonged to Ranboo. Looking at him, then Tubbo, and finally, Sam, he slowly nodded.
“So my mom’s dead too?” Tubbo asked, his facial expressions begging Phil to say something, anything, just to give him some hope.
“No. All we know is that he’s missing from this server.”
“Yeah, but someone could’ve taken him somewhere else and kill him there.”
Everyone then started to plan out how to find and save Wilbur and Quackity.
Wilbur was on the ground. He slowly stood up, blinking in an attempt to adjust to the blinding sunlight. He silently observed his surroundings, coming to the conclusion that… he wasn’t in limbo. He wandered some more, also realizing that he wasn’t in the Dream SMP either.
Wilbur knew he made mistakes in his past lives. This time, he was going to use this as his chance to fix them. He swore to himself that he would do whatever it took to reunite with his loved ones. Quackity, Tallulah, Tilin… he’ll find them.
