Waking up for most high schoolers is tedious, a constant unwelcomed pattern of waking up at the ass crack of dawn, taking a shower, getting dressed in an ugly uniform, basic hygiene, and grabbing food before speeding off to class. What's worse for hero course students is they have a psychopathic rat thing to welcome them into class and to psycho-analyze them before they even begin class. What a good way to start the day!
Most high schoolers would be deathly afraid of Nezu, due to his animalistic habits and lack of human emotions. But when you've been raised in the middle of Hawaii, thrown into volcanos for fun, and forced to melt your body until you become a fucking sludge of rock on the ground for punishments, all morals and values go out the window. Or, at least it does for a hydrophobic teen, one who is currently melting all the concrete in a 10-mile radius because she has to prepare the emergency preparation training grounds.
Keahilani was dressed in her hero uniform, melting and absorbing most of the materials, the heat curling into her chest through the very air she breathed. Having heat and earth-based quirk, strengthened by her own father's quirk allowed her to have most things staked in her favor. The more materials she melted into magma, the more she was in her element and the easier breathing became. The magma she created could also be ingested, for a quick quirk-boosting snack.
Fun fact: the magma tasted like some funky amalgamation of burnt bread and marshmallows, but had the texture of burnt porridge. The first time Keahilani ate the magma, she ended up puking out more magma than she ate, leading to hundreds of doctor's appointments just to find her internal organs were fully composed of magma and other earthy materials. It still had human composure and functions, but the heat from just her lungs alone could start a fire with the clothes she wears. Her hair was another byproduct of her quirk, starting as actual hair and melting into a semi-solid magma, which can be cut off and thrown as a heating pad if she feels the need to. Keahilani could also turn her quirk off to appear more “normal”, but the heat inside her body will double by the hour until she eventually starts cracking and melting. Melting wouldn't be lethal, but rather immensely painful due to falling apart and absorbing whatever she lays in forces her to rewire her very being, and nerves never dissipate in that state.
Aside from that Keahilani is an incredible hero, although incredibly young. She is only mere months older than the heroes in training she's working with today, for “ relatable topics” aka, ‘i want you to make more friends out of the states’. Traitor of an uncle. But, she could understand where he and her father come from, just not the execution. Why pit her against others her age when U.A. students have always been discriminatory to transformation quirks, but an emitter transformation quirk? It's just asking for discrimination at this point.
The only other plausible scenario is that the hero course isn't as discriminatory, due to the diverse quirks in the class itself, but it couldn't be any better than the last group she dealt with who coated her in water, freezing her into a barely breathing solid form. And the only reason they did that was that her appearance was “scary”.
She had been forced to withgo surgeries with Youthful Heroine: Recovery Girl, or she would've spent months at home recovering with her mother. Luckily Keahilani and the rest of the UA staff agreed that was completely off the table. Her mother would never let her join her father and pops at UA again if she got hurt and she found out. Even worse, if Keahilani’s mom found out after she had hidden it from her, Keahilani would get quarantined at the temple for YEARS. And Keahilani did NOT want any more time with her siblings.
Luckily, being a hero was reason enough to avoid home, and has ‘limited vacation time’ (which is a complete lie, Keahilani gets all the time off she wants due to her ranking and influence) but her mother was forgiving of that, and welcomed her home when she had visited last.
“Are you prepared for this class, young yagi?”
“Huh?” looking just past the concrete she was working on melting, was one of her favorite creatures, a chimera known for its intelligence quirk. Nedzu Nezu was casually standing near the edge of the rapidly melting ground, looking down at her from the edge. Keahilani began her adventure up, plunging her arms into the semi-solid rock up to the wrist before hauling herself up the next chunk.
“This is rather impressive, young yagi. You have truly improved since I've taught you last!” Keahilani could practically hear the evil smirk on his face as he (probably) viewed the destruction she caused. “Well, *Jesus christ, bruh*, I did learn from the smartest chimera in the world, so I would like to think of myself as a pro in the field.” a small chitter came from the chimera as she finally peaked over the edge, making eye contact with one of the only adults she could respect.
“Ah, I think you may have outdone yourself this time young yagi! This is an impressive course. Luckily, I have already spoken to my class and briefed them on the training for today, no more mishaps or severe injuries will happen.” Nezu’s tone changed from slightly proud, tinged with a need for chaos, to a finality that only he could hold.
Nezu is a somewhat eccentric, yet polite and well-mannered man (Chimera) who is dedicated to teaching his students to become heroes. He is incredibly clever and intellectual, able to formulate complex plans and strategies with little to no effort. Hearing praise for her abilities truly has weight if the praise comes from Nezu himself. Anyone else and Keahilani would find the compliments to be untruthful.
The chimera held her gaze, before stepping back so she could continue to climb over the ledge. Melted sediments slid off her as she swung her arms over the edge, pulling herself up after digging into the ground for a better grip. Students stepped back in shock as she started to stand, grimacing as the burning sludge splattered on the ground and began to burn.
Only three students held her gaze as she surveyed, the quietest with chin-length hair pulled into a short ponytail, the next with gravity-defying blue hair, and the most eccentric looking like a human cockatoo. This class is definitely a new batch, but some looked more experienced than others. The staff member with blood-red hair and an intrigued gaze off to the edge of the crowd would probably be an issue. An issue for later, but an issue nonetheless.
“Ready to start?” “it's your call, young yagi.” “damn right it is!”
