Chapter 3

He comes back to Yelena and Becca breaking down weapons, Sam hanging watchful over their shoulders.

Her movements were smooth, easy, clean.

He found himself watching her, the suitcase thrown over his shoulder. Maria must have taught her - she knew her way around her guns.

"They cleared out." He announced, catching Sam's eye briefly as he settled the suitcase down. He was focused on English, focused on keeping the words flowing smoothing from his mouth.

Yelena made it come back, Marina made it come back.

"She's stable. You got all of the pieces." Yelena informs him, snapping the clip back in.

"Thanks." He settled the bag on the floor. "Any leads?"

"Non." Yelena handed the sidearm to the girl. "Go watch the window."

Becca looked between them for a long moment, but obeyed her order.

"So what's the play then?" Sam asked. "How long will she be down?"

"Give her a few days, she'll be back on her feet." Yelena advised, flicking her eyes to Sam in an obvious question.

He flexed his real hand slowly, frowning to himself.  He trusted Sam - more than that, Steve trusted Sam, and Sam was here, and Steve wasn't. Sam had a key to his apartment and knew where he kept most of his caches.

He nodded slightly. Yelena relaxed fractionally. "Evan is sleeping with his mother, Becca is a good eye, she will keep watch."

"He doesn't speak Russian."

Her eyes smiled, even if her mouth didn't. "Does he know who we are?"

"Somewhat. It wasn't my story to tell."

She nods, thoughtful, careful. "There are people who think that if they cannot have Captain America, then one of Kudrin's daughters might do." She explained, switching to English effortlessly. "They think, also, that Evan is the best of both worlds."

Sam frowned, arms crossing. "MEaning?"

"The Red Room sought to recreate what they already had." Yelena looked at him, questioning again.

"They're mine. Sort of." He blew out a breath. "They...it was a medical procedure. We never..."

Sam eyed him for a long moment, a small frown curling his lip. He could almost feel the 'talk later' lingering in the air.

"So they're after....just Evan?" He asked, Yelena shrugged.

"Whichever they can get, I think." She picked up another gun, slipped the clip in and made it disappear.

Sam's eyes went wide, almost comically. "So now what."

"We don't let them have him." He answered, tugging his sleeve, pulling it over his arm.

"Obviously." Sam deadpanned.
