the unexpected
One thing she had learned while living with Hydra was to always expect the unexpected. Even though she always told herself that there was nothing she didn't expect, it was still possible. She couldn't remember how she got into this situation but it had happened and she hadn't seen it coming.
"Is there a chance that I could ever hear you sing for me?", she heard her date ask, with a smirk playing on her red lips. Yes, Wanda was on a date. The date itself could have been an expectable thing for the young witch, having been asked out before. The mystery surrounding this particular evening was the woman she was having this date with.
"Maybe one day. I'm still not entirely comfortable with singing in front of others.", Wanda replied softly, knowing that her date would take no offense in her answer. The woman smiled softly, a sight only meant to be seen by certain people, and took a sip from her glass, understanding the young brunette without further explanation.
It was crazy. The bond they shared came so unexpected and still it was one of the most important aspects of Wanda's life right now. Although everything was still so new, Wanda couldn't imagine her life without Natasha Romanoff, the woman who was sitting in front of her, looking like an angel sent from above. Dating the Black Widow was still overwhelming.
Right now they were sitting in a small, quite but really beautiful restaurant that "serves the best pasta in the world" (according to Sam). There was a comfortable silence surrounding them while they ate, slow music playing softly in the background.
It hadn't always been like this. When Wanda first moved into the Avengers compound, she had been a stranger. The foreign girl, who just lost her brother and her home country. She had felt like a charity project.
The others had avoided her (except for Clint, but at the time Wanda had believed that he only kept her company because he felt guilty). She couldn't blame them. She would've avoided herself as well.
After Clint had left to see his family, she had been alone once again. The archer had offered to take her with him but she knew that she would have been a burden, so she declined. She doesn't remember the details, such as the why and when (maybe Clint has had something to do with it) but one day there was a knock on her door.
"Come in?", she asked confused. It wasn't mealtime, so why did someone knock on her door? Natasha entered and looked at the younger woman for a while, saying nothing. Wanda tilted her head to the side, not knowing what to do.
"I-Is there anything I can help you with, Agent Romanoff?", Wanda asked after a few more moments of silence. The spy looked her up and down, which made Wanda feel incredibly self-conscious about her current attire. Normally an oversized hoodie and shorts were acceptable to wear in her own room but something about Natasha told her that her opinion mattered.
"Ice cream.", the redhead in the doorway blurted out, stopping Wanda's train of thought. "Uhm... E-excuse me?", the brunette stuttered, unsure of what ice cream had to do with their current situation.
The older woman smirked and raised one of her perfectly shaped eyebrows. "You like ice cream, right?", she asked, although it was more of a statement than a question.
"Y-yes, but how did you know-", Wanda stuttered, but the spy raised her hand. "Get changed, I'll wait for you in the garage.", and just like that she was gone, leaving an utterly confused Wanda sitting in her bed.
That day was her first day actually seeing New York. Natasha had taken her to the city, showing her around and eventually buying her ice cream in a small café. They talked about everything and nothing for hours, until Wanda couldn't stop herself from asking.
"May I ask you a question?", she blurted out while Natasha took a sip from her iced coffee. "Sure, go ahead.", she said looking at her. During the day Wanda had noticed that Natasha tended to check her surroundings in regular intervals. Wanda, having problems with keeping eye contact, looked down at her bowl of ice cream.
"Why are you doing this for me?", she asked nervously, not daring to look up. She heard Natasha sigh. "Let's just say, I was in your shoes once. A long time ago I was the strange foreigner with a tragic backstory. I know how hard it is to deal with that on your own. And I... I don't want you to be alone.", the redhead answered honestly, which caused Wanda to finally look at her. In her eyes, she noticed a certain vulnerability that she never saw before.
"You know what happened to me. That makes you special.", Natasha added after a few moments of silence, sipping her coffee once more.
"Natasha, I-", Wanda said but was interrupted by Natasha once again. "I know. You already apologized, Wanda. It's alright.", the redhead said softly. "We all make mistakes."
After that day their relationship took a 360 degree turn from cold stares and long lasting silence to warm smiles and laughter. They could tell that the others were surprised, but they didn't say anything against it.
After months of little "ice cream dates" and late movie nights, the unexpected thing happened. Natasha had asked Wanda out on a date.
"Wanda?", the young witch was pulled from her train of thought once again. She looked up at Nat to see her worried expression looking back at her. "Are you okay?", the spy added. "Yes, I'm okay! More than okay actually.", Wanda answered, an apologetic smile gracing her lips. "I'm sorry, I was in thoughts. What did you say?", she asked, taking Natasha's hand into her own.
The redhead smiled at the gesture. "I wanted to ask if we could keep this between us for now? I just... I'm scared that maybe-...". Wanda could tell that Natasha had trouble finding the right words so she slowly stroked her thumb over the back of her hand.
"Hey, it's okay. You don't need to worry. We can take things slow if that's what you want.", Wanda said. Natasha's features immediately softened and she slowly nodded. "Yes... That would mean a lot to me."
So they took things slow. They went on a couple more dates and with time came an even closer bond. At this point they were inseparable. Even though Natasha was the softest and most relaxed when she was with Wanda, there were still things that were difficult for her.
They haven't gone past making out. The Black Widow had spent most of her time, using her body for her benefits. Now the idea of spending a night with Wanda frightened her. She cared for her too much and when the time was right she wanted it to mean something.
When they cuddled, Wanda never stayed the night. They had talked about Natasha's nightmares and how she tended to move around when she was still asleep. She didn't want to hurt Wanda while sleeping, so every evening, Wanda would wait until Natasha had fallen asleep before slipping out of her room and going to bed in her own room.
With every night it got harder for Wanda to leave, but she knew that Natasha needed this so she pushed herself to exit after the spy had fallen asleep (although she would always linger and watch Natasha relaxing in her sleep for a few minutes, looking way too soft and adorable for her own good).
And then there was the question. They weren't girlfriends, not officially at least. Wanda knew that Natasha still had problems with getting too attached and asking Wanda to officially be her girlfriend would make it all too real. She would need to protect her from her enemies, if they ever managed to find out about them (which Natasha would not let happen) but even worse than that, she would need to admit to herself that she loved the younger girl.
The spy knew that she would start caring for Wanda, the moment she knocked on her door. But she would've never thought that she would start caring for her this deeply. Being with Wanda felt safe. She could be herself. She could drop the facade and be vulnerable, knowing that Wanda would never take advantage of that.
One morning, Natasha woke up to the smell of coffee. Slowly opening her eyes, she caught a glimpse of Wanda nearly falling over Nat's boots, which she forgot to put away last night. The russian spy saw Wanda's lips form a silent curse and smiled. "You know... Sometimes I wonder how you're still alive at this point. You're so clumsy, it's adorable.", Natasha mumbled while fully opening her eyes, startling her lover, who put the breakfast tray she had been carrying, on Natasha's nightstand.
"Oh thank god, you're awake. I had no idea how to wake you up without making a mess.", the brunette smiled relieved and sat down next to Nat on the bed. "Good morning", she leaned down and caught the redhead's lips in a chaste kiss but when she tried to pull away, Nat instead pulled her into the bed next to her.
"Just one moment.", she mumbled into Wanda's hair, as she cuddled into her side. She heard the brunette giggle. "You need to eat before your breakfast gets cold.", Wanda said smiling, while running her fingers through the red hair of her... partner?
"Wait... You actually cooked breakfast for me?", Natasha asked, raising her head to look at the smiling brunette, who now raised one of her eyebrows. "Well, yes, what did you expect?", she asked, clearly amused. Natasha cuddled back into Wanda. "Firstly, I didn't expect breakfast in bed at all and secondly, after seeing you enter, I thought you'd bring me coffee and cornflakes.", she smirked, remembering when Wanda almost started a fire the last time she was in the kitchen.
She heard the brunette gasp next to her.
"Excuse me?! I'm an excellent cook, okay? Last time only happened because a certain someone couldn't keep her hands to herself.", Wanda said, knowing full well that Nat was trying to tease her. She had been successful.
"Yeah yeah, keep telling yourself that, princess.", Natasha smirked, before rolling on top of Wanda and kissing her. The young witch responded immediately, pulling Natasha closer to her by wrapping her arms around her waist.
Before things could get even more heated, Wanda pulled away.
"You should really eat, before it gets cold. And I need to go on my morning run.", she said, slightly gasping for air. Kissing Natasha always knocked the oxygen out of her lungs.
Natasha leaned back slightly, only now realizing that Wanda was wearing her sports leggings and shirt.
"You're going on a run?", she asked amused, knowing how much Wanda hated jogging.
"Yeah, I got this really strict mentor, who keeps telling me to work on my cardio.", Wanda smirked, climbing out of bed. Natashed hummed. "Sounds like she knows what's good for you."
"Nah, she's just really mean.", Wanda winked at Nat before grabbing the tray from the night stand. Natasha sat up straight and let Wanda put her breakfast on her lap. The young witch kissed her cheek. "Bon appétit."
Natasha smiled down at her breakfast, while Wanda headed towards the door. "I love you!", she said, before leaving the room and closing the door behind her.
Natasha was left in shock, staring at the door. Had Wanda just....
Right after the door had fallen shut, Wanda realized her mistake. She stopped in her tracks, eyes wide open. Deciding that it was best to not ruin Natasha's morning even more, she quickly walked towards her room, put on her running shoes and left for her run.
