Finally

"Hey. you okay?"

You jump back from where you were sitting against the window looking out at the stars, your body instinctively preparing to fight.

"Hey hey. It's just me." she whispers. You relax at the sound of Karli's voice. "I’m sorry I didn't mean to scare you. I tried to get your attention a few times but you were totally zoned out," she chuckled

"No it's okay," you laugh "I was just super deep in thought I guess." Suddenly you felt your face fall, as your previous thoughts all come flooding back to you.

"Hey what's wrong? You know you can tell me." She comes and sits next to you on your cot. Feeling the mattress dip under her weight brings you comfort.

"I just...miss home I guess. I know we can't go back and I know what we're doing is important, but I just...miss when life was simpler, ya know? Before the blip and before everything went to shit." you sigh. Though you couldn't see her face, you knew your best friend well enough to hear the worry in her voice as she began to speak.

“I know what you mean. As much as I try to act strong and be a good leader, I miss it too," Karli sighs. "But hey, at least we've still got each other. I honestly don't know what I would’ve done if you hadn't agreed to join us. I can't imagine not having you here." You finally look up from your lap, and though it's dark, you see that tenderness in her eyes that you’ve missed. The look that you haven't seen in months.

"Of course I was coming with you, stupid. I can't believe that after 15 years of friendship you thought there was ever any way I wasn't."

"I knew you would. i was just worried it might be too much." Suddenly the tender look in her eyes faded and was replaced by a look of sadness, almost emptiness and she thought about having to go through all of this without you.

"You know what I miss the most?" you whisper, trying to lighten the mood again.

"I miss when we would hang out for days at a time and get no sleep cause we were up all night talking," you chuckle. "I never felt safe at home what with my parents being who they are and thinking the way they do, but whenever I came over to yours all that went away for awhile." You smile.

"Well, I know it's not the same," Karli says, "but at least we're together now, right?"

But, as you continue to gaze deeply into her eyes, you still can't help but hope she feels the same way.

So you make a choice.

"No Karli. I-I love you. For real." You can't look into her eyes as you say it, your gaze dropping back to your shaking hands in your lap, hoping to a god you didn't even believe in that she wouldn't hate you forever now.

A moment or two passes by, as she tries to figure out what you mean. but when she does, all you hear is a small "Oh." As she moves her hand to grip your arm, you prepare yourself for rejection. She pulls back, just testing the waters, and as you lock eyes once more, you can feel all your muscles relax before you lean back into her, lips slotting together as if they were meant to do so. Your breath hitches, and you both freeze for a moment, getting used to the sensation of each other’s lips.
