Chapter 1

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Working as an Avenger was not easy, but it had its perks. For example, she had met amazing people who later became her family, but most importantly, it was how she crossed paths with the one and only Agent 13, also known as Sharon Carter.

She met Sharon just a couple of months before S.H.I.E.L.D. went down. The Avenger was assigned on a mission, and she had to work with some of the Agents, Sharon being one of them. Both were smitten as soon as they laid eyes on each other and later developed a beautiful relationship. She even thought about asking Sharon to marry her but decided to put that decision on hold due to the Battle at the Triskelion.

Some of her friends asked if she didn’t notice the way Sharon looked at Steve and vice-versa, which she always answered with a ‘no’. It was the truth – she didn’t notice them fall in love. Steve stared at Sharon with a different look, but she didn’t reciprocate it, at least that was what she thought. But that wasn’t why their relationship started to fall apart.

She had overheard a conversation Sharon was having on the phone, presumably with Nick Fury.

“Sir, I don’t think I can do this anymore. It’s getting too much…” Sharon spoke with certainty on her voice while she paced around the counter on her kitchen. “No, sir. I don’t think they need me anymore.”

She must be talking about Steve for sure” she thought to herself as she hid behind the bedroom door. She knew that Nick Fury had asked her to keep an eye on Captain Rogers.

“Sir, she is not a threat. I am 100% sure. And neither is he.” Sharon sighed loudly, covering her mouth immediately after, afraid of waking up her girlfriend, who was supposed to be sleeping, not spying on her. “Sir, with all due respect, but I’m not doing it anymore. I’m done.” Agent 13 hung up the call and put the phone on top of the counter.

That was when she finally put the pieces together – Sharon was not only spying on Steve, but also on her. Their whole relationship was a façade. She tried to find her clothes that were spread across the room due to the previous night’s events and put them on. Spending another second with Sharon was out of the question. She had to leave that apartment and never come back.

“Hey baby” Sharon smiled at her as soon as she entered the kitchen. “What’s wrong? Is everything all right?”

“I’m glad your little mission is over, and you don’t have to spy on me anymore” she answered her as she looked around the room for items that belonged to her, “I’m done, Sharon. I never want to see you again.” The agent was speechless. “I overheard you talking on the phone with Fury. We’re over.”

“No no no no, you don’t understand-”

She stopped grabbing her things and stared at her, “So you weren’t spying on me on behalf of Nick Fury?” Sharon didn’t answer her. “This whole relationship was just a way for you to find out all of my secrets and spill them to your fucking boss. I can’t believe I fell for that.”

“No, our relationship was real!” Sharon spoke up, “Our relationship is real!” She tried to hold her girlfriend’s hands, but she dismissed her touch in a heartbeat. “Please, I can fix this. Please.”

“You could never fix this. It’s over, Sharon.”

She left the apartment and never looked back. Sharon tried to talk to her every time she saw her – at work, at the Avengers’ tower, even on the street – but she dodged her. Just looking at Sharon made her heart hurt.

Months passed and it seemed that her heartbreak was long gone. She hadn’t seen Sharon for a long time and that was actually helping her to heal. But it all broke down in a matter of minutes.

After the Accords, she agreed to work for a new secret agency and leave the Avengers for good. There was no point on working with that team anymore since they had basically broken up and were gonna work under the government’s orders.

Steve contacted her and asked for her help to take down Zemo and the other Winter Soldiers. At first, she declined, but after he explained what was gonna happen, she reluctantly accepted to help. He asked to meet him, Bucky, and Sam in Berlin. When she got to the location, she noticed a second car was parked there, but she didn’t think much of it. After greeting the three men, she got in the backseat along with Bucky. Steve had told her that the person who was on that car was gonna give them the shield and wings back.

Captain America got out of the car, and so did the other person they were waiting for. Her heart shattered once more as soon as she saw her. Sharon looked the same even after all those months. She tried not to look at her while Steve spoke to her, keeping her head down. It hurt less if she didn’t stare at her. Suddenly, Bucky nudged her with his elbow. That was when she looked up and saw Sharon and Steve passionately kissing. Both Sam and Bucky had huge smiles on their faces, happy for their friend to finally move on. No one knew about her past relationship with Sharon, only Nick Fury was aware of it.

“Finally!” Sam spoke up, “They have been gawking at each other for weeks!”

When they finally stopped kissing, Sharon looked at the blue Volkswagen and that was when she noticed she was there. The ex-Avenger quickly cleaned the tears that were falling down her face with her hands, but Sharon had already seen her state.

Not wanting to be there any other second, she opened her window and put her head outside. “Come on, we have to go!” She yelled at Steve, who nodded at her. Cap said his goodbyes to Sharon and returned to the car.

“You okay?” Bucky softly asked her. He had noticed she was acting strange after their encounter with Sharon.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” She offered him a small smile, which he instantly detected it was fake, but decided not to bother her anymore. “She used to be mine…” she whispered in a low tone, confident that no one had heard her, but Bucky did. He put the pieces together and finally figured out why she was so sad. Since he didn’t know her that well, he decided it was best not to ask, at least not at that moment, when Steve was also in the car, so he just softly rubbed her shoulder.

She tried not to break down during the trip to the airport, but it was getting harder and harder each second. Sharon was the love of her life, and she was now gone, in love with someone else, someone she considered family. All she had to do was accept it and let it go. Sharon was no longer hers…
