During the Battle of New York Loki, the God of Mischief killed your sister. Your sister was a social worker and died while bringing her daughter, Katherine, for safety. Your family disowned you when they found out you identified as Non-Binary and she was the only one who accepted you, one of your favourite moments with her is when she beat the crap of your abusive ex-boyfriend, even though you were angry with her in the moment you will be forever grateful. Since your 16th birthday you had a big purple soul mark on your left side in the shape of Madagascar, you’ve always felt self-conscious about it since your ex made fun of it, but your sister made it her life goal to make you see your inner beauty. Since she’s been gone you started to hate everything she told you made you special. You found yourself joining S.H.I.E.L.D as an agent after your 8 year long service in the army, you decided to leave the army after your best friend, Daniel, became very sick because of the radiation took place in the battle which came to haunt him in his later life, and had no one to take care of. He passed away just a few months ago and you are glad you shared his last seconds with him. Your life was far from perfect and loved leaving you alone, and the people who loved you being taken away from you by Loki Odinson, but the big ugly mark on your side did give you the hope of someone who will stay.
Now you live in the small apartment Daniel left you and kept your distance from your sister’s part of the family in fear of being reminded of her. You don’t have contact with anyone except for your co-workers and that’s fine with you, because you found an unhealthy coping mechanisms in depressing books and making music. Something everyone you worked with knows about you making your own music due to you singing your depressing songs at your desk.
Since the events of Svaltarfheim Loki’s punishment has been lessened and has been moved to a cell on earth which is kept neat and comfortable. You’ve been assigned to watch over Loki, located in the Avengers base. You truly hated Loki with all your heart but feared that if you declined your task you would be fired, and you needed the money bad. If your bosses found out about your loved ones deaths they wouldn’t let you further this mission which would also result in less money. It’s a lose-lose situation
The weekend ended and it was time to go to work, you arrived on the base with your little briefcase filled with everything you needed to get through the day. Loki’s ‘room’ was see through and you could easily talk to him when it was necessary. You sat on the comfortable armchair at the little corner that’s been made for you, Loki was standing in the middle of his cell, watching you. You ignored his deep analysis of your appearance and unpacked your briefcase. You spent hours ignoring him, reading ‘they both die at the end’ while he just stares at you. At the end of your shift you leave some of your things in your little corner, for you to come back to, and go home for the day. You had the surveillance cameras hooked up to your phone so you could watch him while you were away. You drove home and dropped your keys on your kitchen counter. You sighed as you brought your hands to your face when you saw another invitation to Katherine 4th birthday. You felt like an asshole when you threw it in the trash-can but couldn’t find it in yourself to actually go. Thinking about missing your niece’s birthday because of your sorrow made you fall to the ground in tears, you felt like you failed her but there was no one to apologise to, you grabbed the piece of paper out of the bin and wrote the word ‘sorry’ on it repeatedly as a means of communication. The ink of pen soon went to your hand when the paper was full and it wrote through your sobs, that day you fell asleep on your couch because of exhaustion.
The next morning was just as uneventful as the previous day, you made it on time, unlike you expected, you saw Loki take a quick look hand and as he did so you tried rubbing the words of the previous night of your skin. It wasn't until noon that something happened. Instead of standing in the middle of the room, Loki approached the wall nearest you and spoke, "You seem to disdain me more than your fellow Avengers. I don't recall ever doing anything to you. I would remember seeing such a beautiful face." You looked at him sharply and turned your face away from his smirking one. You were told he had a knack for getting under peoples' skin. "You want to be silent? Very well. I'll admire you from a distance then." He returned to the middle of the room but continued to watch you with a thin-lipped smile. Despite yourself, you couldn't help but wonder if his legs ached from standing so long. When you went home that day there was no invitation to a birthday party like there had been the last week. You knew they just gave up but deep down you kept thinking about how they must have felt the message being written down yesterday. You showered for half an hour trying to scrub the ink of your hands as you didn’t have the time for that yesterday. You checked the surveillance cameras before going to sleep.
As Loki said, he didn't bother you for the rest of the week. You kept your mouth shut, read your books and used your guitar in peace. No doubt, just as the other Avengers promised, he was trying to get under your skin. You were used to having people scrutinize your every move after living in a bigoted household your whole life, but what Loki was doing felt different. He never once asked what the hell you were actually doing every day.
To your dismay, when you returned to your desk the following Monday, Loki decided he wanted to bother you.
"It's terribly lonely in here. Why don't you join me?" He knew you weren't going to answer but he still prodded you. "What's wrong dear? Afraid I bite? I promise it's only lightly."
You gave him a cold glare and returned to the book you were reading.
"You enjoy reading? Do enlighten me on the title," he asked. Unlike the way he was speaking previously, he seemed genuinely curious to know. Who knew a god would be interested in books?
Even though you told yourself you wouldn't utter a word to him, you decided to tell him what you were reading. "Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare."He responded only with a hum, as if he was thinking it over. You raised your eyebrows, expecting him to say more about your sudden inclination to speak to him. He took a couple seconds to think and began talking again. “You seem quite fond of that guitar you have there, why don’t you ever present me something?” another genuine question filled with humour was spoken by the God. “Make music.” You say short, ignoring the last comment. "You dislike talking to me and looking at me." He said it as if it was a fact. Which it was. You ignore him and continue reading. “Sir (Y/L/N)?” He asks to grab your attention, and it does. You lunge forward to the glass and pounce your fist on it. “I’m not a ‘sir’, asshole.” You spat at him, he had to know, right? He was given some information about you. “An ‘asshole’ like you? I, a rightful king, asked you, a mortal, a question and you ignore it.” “Fine! Yes I do dislike talking and looking at you, and no I won’t show you my music! Are you happy now ‘Your Majesty’?” You screamed at him, making sure to make a mockery out of the title you had given him. He smirked at you and you returned to your corner, you hated how he got under your skin, you should’ve been used to people misgendering you but it still stung whenever someone did it. You continued reading your book but he opened his mouth again.
"What did I do to you?" He said this with an earnest tone. He genuinely wanted to know. It was eating at him that such a beautiful creature would feel such hatred towards him. You let out a sharp sigh and decided to give him what he was searching for. "During your little rampage in New York, you killed my sister and it was also the direct cause of my best friend’s death. I'm sorry if I don't act friendly," you spat. For a second he looked taken aback. Even though it was only a fraction of a second you caught it. Did he not realize the damage he had caused? Surely he wasn't that thick-skulled, you thought.
"I apologize, I wasn't aware."
"Of course you weren't. You were too busy trying to take over Earth to take into account that you were killing people," you scoffed. "And don't act like you're sorry. I know you aren't."
He remained silent for the next few hours, which bothered you more than his speaking evidently. You had to admit, sitting there for hours was boring but it would be worth it in the end.
"Do you have a liking for tragic love stories?” Loki asked as you were halfway through the book.
"I hate this book." You replied shortly.
“Then why do you read this, I doubt it’s your first time reading this book.” He said. You thought about his words for a second before replying “I guess I do like tragic love stories, though you can hardly call this a love story.”. He nodded his head and walked through his cell.
"I have also lost a lot of loved ones. You should not feel so alone, dear. I share your emptiness." His words caught you off guard. He was right. A part of you did feel empty. But you weren't one to admit that you were aching for someone or something to fill that gap. They were your support system and since they died you were alone. You didn’t have any friends and didn’t try to make them because of your loss. You never had any real family except for the two people that got no mercy from the universe. You were a ball of anger and sadness that never got to let go of your grievances. The feelings inside of you never came to the surface, you carried them with you, just for them to haunt you every day when you get home.
You didn't want to say anything back in fear he was still trying to pick you apart and tear you down. "He's a villain. He's done terrible things. He killed everyone you loved," you kept repeating to yourself. You weren't about to let Loki make you vulnerable. You had to lock him out of your head in respect for sister and Daniel. You decided to quit talking to him for now on. You couldn't start being friendly. You especially couldn't let yourself be attracted to him. That would be your downfall. Although you did feel empathy towards him, you wouldn't let anything else happen.
"What am I doing?" you thought as you arrived back in your bedroom around a week later. Your mouth didn't like to listen to your head. You found yourself talking to Loki when he spoke to you. Talking to him. Answering his questions. You promised yourself you would stop talking to him, but you never do. You didn't want to fall deeper into the trap that is Loki's charms, but you finally found someone to talk to and even have something there that could be defined as companionship to an outsider. Things had gone too far already, but maybe you didn’t care anymore, Daniel and your sister should just have to forgive you because it seems to look like you had your very first friend in two years.
A week later you laid in bed falling asleep while watching the security cameras, a habit you picked up along the way. The next day you went to your shift as normal and you stalked through the halls as you made your way to the cell. Sure enough, Loki was already looking at the entrance as you walked through it, a genuine smile plastered on his face. “There you are, mortal, I have a proposal for you,” Loki looked like he was about to burst in excitement. “My my Loki, it’s a little to early for marriage don’t you think.” You joked. “Not if you say the words darling,” He saw your unimpressed look and continued what he was saying, “You make music, so I thought maybe you would be so kind to show me some of it since we’re getting close.” He looked at you with puppy eyes and you found yourself agreeing with the proposition. “Yeah sure, I’ll grab my guitar,” you grabbed your guitar and sat in front of the glass with Loki sitting on the other side of the glass. “pick a number from 1-36 and I will sing that song to you.” You explained to him. “You really have that much songs? Alright then, 12.” You stiffened for a millisecond but covered up your nervousness and began playing.
“Hey, this is a story I hate
And telling it might make me break
But I'll tell it anyway” You began singing, trying to break the nervousness.
“This chapter's about
How you said there was nobody else
Then you got up and went to her house
You guys always left me out” You gripped the guitar tighter to make you didn’t mess up.
“I still have the letter you wrote
When you told me that I was the only one
You'd ever want in your life
I guess my friends were right” A tear escaped your eyes thinking about how your sister and Daniel looking out for you and how they weren’t able to do that anymore.
“Each day goes by and each night, I cry
Somebody saw you with her last night
You gave me your word, ‘Don't worry 'bout her’
You might love her now, but you loved me first” Loki looked at you with pure amazement but you don’t notice because you’re to focussed on playing the guitar.
“Said you'd never hurt me, but here we are
Oh, you swore on every star
How could you be so reckless with my heart?”
“You check in and out
Of my heart like a hotel
And she must be perfect, oh well
I hope you both go to hell” you smiled at the line your old self wrote, you remembered how angry you were with your ex when he cheated on you again. The third time was the last straw for you.
“I still have the letter you wrote
When you told me that I was the only one
You'd ever want in your life
I guess my friends were right” You started to relax and began looking up at Loki with a smile on your lips. Loki was listening to the song and only smiled back at you when he saw that you weren’t upset.
“Each day goes by and each night, I cry
Somebody saw you with her last night
You gave me your word, ‘Don't worry 'bout her’
You might love her now, but you loved me first” Now the nerves were gone as you realized Loki wasn’t judging your singing and you stood up with your guitar, dancing along with the music. Loki also stood up and began dancing, though his dance was more of moving back and forth.
“Said you'd never hurt me, but here we are
Oh, you swore on every star
How could you be so reckless with my heart?”
“How could you be so reckless?
How could you be so reckless?
How could you be so reckless with someone's heart?” The look on Loki’s was absolutely beautiful, he had his eyes closed and had a resting smile on his face.
“Hey, this is a story I hate
But I told it to cope with the pain
I'm so sorry if you can relate.” You finished the song and he started clapping and cheering. “Oh piss off, now you’re just pushing it.” You said to him. “I’m offended at how you never once played this for me.” Was the first thing he said to you. “I’m sorry, your Majesty, please forgive me.” You bowed down as far as you could and when you got up you put your fists to your check like a love-sick teenager to mess with him. “You’ve been forgiven.” He said and made you laugh. “Will you do me the honour of sing-“ “No,” You cut him off. “You’ve had enough for today, I was supposed to tell you about this new book I found.” “Well then, do enlighten me little mortal.” He said with a grin.
When you were in the middle of explaining 'The Fault In Our Stars' him, Director Fury bursted in with a few of his agents only a few of them you recognized. "Director Fury? Is there a problem?" You asked him. "Nothing at all Mx. (Y/L/N), we're just haven our seasonal check on Mr. Laufeyson here." Fury explained to you. "Hey (Y/N)! How are you!" Natasha Romanoff asked you. "Uhm... I'm good, just the usual stuff you know?" you replied shyly. "Oh come on, I know you're shy, but you're part of the team! No need to act all uncomfortable around us." Clint Barton answered. "I know, I know, I just am this way. I'll come around some day." by the time you finished your sentence Loki was let out of his cell and walked directly towards you. "Finally, I can talk to you without a glass wall separating us." He grinned. You touched his arm slightly and suddenly you felt a sharp pain in your side, Loki must have felt it too because you were both reaching for your sides. "Oh my god. FURY!" Natasha shouted. Fury hurried over to you, you were on the ground because of the pain. Loki just stood there gripping his side with a hurt expression on his face. "Natasha lift them shirt." Clint instructed her. When she did, your big soul mark was glowing and guessing by Loki's reaction, his was too. "Take them to the check up with Loki." Fury instructed the agents.
The check up went as normal as it could, since you were passed out, and during the check up both your chest were bare and both your soul marks started to slowly fade. You slowly opened your eyes and saw Loki staring at your fading soul mark. "It's you, you're my soulmate. It was always you." He whispered to you. "I guess you're right. You've always been mine too." You chuckled. He looked at you with the most vulnerable eyes you've ever seen. "Can I hug you?" he asks. You're a little taken aback by his words, seeing he's a very closed off person, but still agree to his request. "I fell for you the moment I saw you." He admitted softly in your ear. You let out an audible gasp. "You won't leave me, right?" You ask him, looking him straight in the eyes.
"I swear on my life I will never leave you."
