Give Me a Rebel
When (Y/N) woke up, it was about 5:30 am. He tip-toed down the stairs and prepared coffee for his father so he would have it nice and fresh when he woke up at 6:10. He quietly cooked breakfast and had it plated by 6 o'clock. He was doing the dishes when his father made his appearance. The hard scrape of the chair against the linoleum floor signaled his arrival as he sat down. (Y/N) dried his hands off on a hand towel before pouring the coffee for him and setting it next to his plate. His father made a soft grunting noise before he reached for the coffee, taking three large sips. “You remind me more and more of your mother each day, boy.” He froze slightly as he put the coffee pot back in its place. Not knowing what to say he simply nodded and continued to dry and put the dishes away. His father, being the brash man he was, was not one to stay calm and quiet for long no matter the circumstances. As he was putting the last dish away, his father's plate went sailing past his head, nearly missing him. “Pick that up.” He hissed at him like he was the one who tried to assault him. He nodded his head before shakily crouching down and carefully picking up the broken pieces of the plate and the food that went sailing with it. He didn't get very far before his father stood up so quickly it sent his chair flying backwards and caused the table to rattle from the excessive force. He flinched when his father approached him, grabbing a fist full of his hair while yanking him to his feet. “You're no better than your bitch of a mother.” He growled at him briefly. “You're not going out tonight. You got work to do. Understand me, boy?” He said, narrowing his eyes at him. (Y/N) managed a weak nod as he tried not to pull against his grip. He was let go only to be slapped across the face. “Use your damn words, boy.” He said loudly, fueling the boy's fear as his head hung to the side. “Y.. Yes Sir. Understood Sir.” He said only loud enough for him to hear as he stared at the spot on the floor where a small drop of blood fell from his re split lip. He grunted in approval before pouring himself a glass of Scotch, downing it in one go. “I expect that mess to be cleaned up by the time I get home from work.” He said as he shrugged on his coat and headed for the door. “Yes sir.” Was all (Y/N) said before he attempted to clean the mess once again. When his father left he let out a breath of relief and sat on the floor, relaxing slightly against the wall as he loosely held the shards in his hand. He threw the glass away and cleaned the remaining mess the best he could before he cleaned himself up. He hissed softly when he dabbed some rubbing alcohol on his cheek, trying to tend to the welt that was forming. He sighed softly and slung his bag over his shoulder before leaving the house. He locked up the house before slipping the key around his neck and heading down the street. It took him around 15 minutes to get to the hospital. He greeted the nurse who gave him a soft smile before going back to the paperwork she had. He moved around people, trying to stay out of their way until he found Sarah. She gave him a sweet smile before going back to redressing someone's wound. “Nice of you to join us this morning, sweetheart. I think we could use help restocking and administering some medication to some patients?” He simply nodded and went to work. He did the normal routine; taking the patient's vitals, temperature then medication before asking if there was anything he could get them. He internally sighed when he went to the lunch area to sit with Sarah, when he was stopped by one of the nurses. “Hey! (Y/N), it's so nice to see you!” (Y/N) tried his best to give her a smile rather than a grimace. “Sandra, hey. How have you been?” He said while inching towards the tables. She gave him a bright smile, standing too close for his comfort. “Oh I've just been swell. I had to babysit for my older sister so I haven't been able to get to help out here recently. Did you see the fireworks last night? They were amazing!” She said, hardly pausing to breathe. (Y/N) gave her a polite smile and nodded. “I did. They were indeed spectacular.” He tried to step away but she continued to follow him. “So (Y/N), are you busy this week at all?” He raised an eyebrow at her, pausing slightly. “Yes actually. I have to work for my father and I have a few dates with my girlfriend lined up. Why?” He lied through his teeth with a slight head tilt and a smile. She looked a bit let down over the news but shook her head a bit. “Oh, it was nothing. I hope you have a nice lunch.” She said with a small smile and walked away with a bit less pep in her step. He let out a soft sigh when he sat next to Sarah and did his best not to slouch. She shook her head slightly and gave him a look. “That wasn't very nice to lie to that poor girl like that (Y/N).” He gave her a sheepish smile before he picked at the food he brought. “Well.. I didn't want to hurt her feelings by taking her out when I don't have any interest in her, Ma’am..” she shook her head a bit and let out a sigh. “I suppose you have a point but you didn't need to lie to her, dear.” He nodded a bit and took a bite out of his food. “I'll apologize to her later?” She gave him a small smile before taking a sip of her drink. “Good, You better.” She said with a jokingly stern look that made (Y/N) let out a small laugh. “Yes ma'am.” The rest of their shift passed quickly as he helped Sarah out the best he could. She nudged him in the direction of Sandra as she collected her things and gave him an encouraging smile. He sighed inwardly before making his way over to her. She looked up and gave him a small smile. “Hey (Y/N). Did you need something?” He nodded slightly before letting out a sigh. “I wanted to apologize. I'm not particularly busy this week and I'm not actually goin' steady with anyone. I just didn't want to hurt your feelings.” He said softly, lowering his head a bit in shame. Sandra let out a giggle and put a comforting hand on his arm for a moment, gaining his attention. “It's alright, (Y/N). I understand. Thank you for being honest with me.. we're still friends right?” She said a bit hopefully and he gave her a kind smile. “Of course. You're one of the few people I can deal with being around.” He said laying it on a bit thick, knowing that Sarah was still watching him. She let out a small “Awe” and gave him a brief hug. “I'll see you tomorrow, (Y/N). Be safe!” She said happily before making her way out. He let out a breath of relief before making his way back to Sarah who had a smile that could rival a child who got a pile of candy on Halloween. “I'm very proud of you, son.” She said before making her way out, leaving a shocked (Y/N) behind her. He quickly caught up to her and tried to hide his surprise. “Ma'am, did you call me 'son'?” She let out a small giggle and nodded. “Yes, of course I did. You're practically a son to me, (Y/N). You're always there for Steven and I, you help me out at work and at home. You're like a son I never got to have, so of course I would call you that. You and James honestly. You boys are very special to me.” She said softly as she gently took hold of (Y/N)'s arm as they walked together. “I.. I'm at a loss for words Ma'am. Truly.” He said quietly, trying to get a hold of his emotions. “I don't remember much about my mother Ms. Rogers.. not really at least. So it's a lot to hear and take in.” He said in a bit of confusion as he focused on the sidewalk. She gave his arm a small pat and a sympathetic nod. “I know hun. I know. Just know that if you ever need anyone, I'm here okay?” She said softly as she gently brushed her thumb over the cheek that was slightly cut open but still red and sore looking but looked a lot less angry than it did that morning. He tried to hold in his wince but managed to give her a small smile. “Thank you.. Sarah. It really means a lot.” He said with a small pause, choosing to use her name instead of ma'am. She ruffled his hair a bit, trying to bite back a grin as they walked to her house. He gave her a quick hug before letting her walk inside. He took a deep breath as he slowly walked in the direction of his home, biding his time. It was about halfway home when he made a decision. He smiled to himself as he quickened his pace. He was going to sneak out. There was no way he would miss it, especially since Bucky had asked him to go. He quietly opened the front door before listening for his father. When he decided that he wasn't home, he made his way to the kitchen to finish cooking the dinner he had planned for him. After he got everything plated for him, he checked the time. He let out a deep sigh when he realized that it was nearly 5 o'clock. He quickly flipped through the small cookbook that his mother left. He let a gleeful smile appear when he saw the drink recipes in her neat cursive. He decided that if he worked quickly, he could make his father something before his arrival. He mixed a bit of sleeping medication into his drink, letting it devolve completely before he topped it off with the Scotch. He set the drink on the table just as his father came home, slamming the door behind him. (Y/N) gathered all the nerves he could and went to greet him. “Welcome home sir.” He said while taking his coat for him after he removed his hat. He placed both on the rack as his father pushed past him, making him stumble slightly. “Hmm. You're useful after all, boy. Aren't ya.” He said in a slightly less irritated tone before. The scrape of the chair signaled he was indeed sitting down to eat this time. He made his way into the kitchen as his father began to eat. “Sit. We need to have a talk.” (Y/N) quietly sat down, sneaking a look at the time before setting his eyes on the table. “Your uncle has work for you outta state. You're leavin’ in two weeks when he gets here.” (Y/N) froze slightly, his eyes darting up to his father but made sure he didn't meet his eyes. He blinked a few times and nodded. “Okay Sir.” His father grunted in response before taking a large swig of his drink. He waited a few minutes before getting up and taking his empty cup to the counter. He refilled his drink with plain Scotch before setting it down. His heart raced a bit faster when he saw his father falling asleep at the table. He quickly made his way to his room and got dressed for his night out. He silently prayed to whatever god could hear him that he would have enough time before his father woke up again. Not long after, there was a knock at the front door. He made his way down, checking to see that his father was indeed out like a light, before he answered the door. He smiled brightly when he saw Bucky standing there with his lopsided smile. “Hey doll.. you wore blue this time?” He said softly with a small head tilt. (Y/N) laughed a bit before gesturing to him to get moving before he shut and locked the door, hiding the key under his shirt. “Of course I did. It's your favorite color, sweetheart.” He said softly while walking to Bucky's ride. He nearly missed the blush that coated his cheeks as he hopped in the back with Steve and the two girls that were their "dates". Bucky cleared his throat a bit before he started driving. His face lit up when Bucky pulled up to the carnival. The girls inside squealed and (Y/N) couldn't help but let out a gentle laugh at their excitement. When they got out Dot took Michelle's hand and raced towards the entrance while Bucky and (Y/N) started to trail behind them with Steve and Sue following them. Steve gave Sue a shy smile as they walked ahead, leaving Bucky and (Y/N) who trailed just close enough behind Dot and Michelle to make it look like they were their dates. “So, what ride you wanna go on first?” Bucky asked (Y/N) with a soft smile. “What about one of the games first?” (Y/N) said with a smirk before he started to walk over to them, leaving Bucky to follow. “Come on, I'll win ya something.” He said confidently when he caught up to him. (Y/N) placed his hands on his hips before choosing one of the booths. He raised an eyebrow, plastering a smirk on his face before he paid the man and took one of the three baseballs he was given. He tossed it a few times before taking his stance. He wound back and launched it at the milk bottles, taking them all down at once. The man let out a low whistle before moving out of (Y/N)s way, giving him access to the rest of the pyramids waiting to be knocked down. (Y/N) missed the awed look Bucky gave him while he proceeded to knock down the other milk bottles. (Y/N) put his hands on his hips before looking back over at him, looking very pleased. Bucky had a bright smile on his face while (Y/N) looked pleased with himself. “So, what prize do you want, kid?” He turned his attention back to the man and thought it over for a moment. “Give me the Polar bear please.” He said with a small smile. The attendant nodded and got it down for him, handing it over before setting up the milk bottles again. He immediately handed it over to Bucky before they made their way to a different game. By the time he had won everyone a prize, they had met up with the girls again. Bucky and (Y/N) each won a prize for their "dates" and they gave the girls their prizes but kept the ones they won for each other. They all happily chatted while he walked close enough to both Steve and Bucky. The girls ended up taking off again, but dragged Sue along this time while the boys lagged behind. (Y/N) spotted a photo booth and nudged the others. “Wanna take some pictures together? It'll be quick.” Bucky laughed softly before leading the way with Steve and (Y/N) lagging behind a bit. “You okay to take some pictures, dreamboat? I would hate to drag you away from your dame.” (Y/N) asked him softly, causing Steve to blush a lovely shade of pink. He nodded shyly. “Yeah.. of course. It’s alright, she’s having fun with the girls.” He said just above a hesitant whisper. When they got to the photo booth, (Y/N) let Steve and Bucky head in first to take pictures while he stood guard and insisted that they took doubles before they switched places. After they had taken pictures with each other, looking silly with all the different faces they pulled together, (Y/N) joined the two in the small booth while stifling a laugh as he sat mostly on Bucky's lap. Steve blushed slightly when he saw (Y/N) kiss Bucky’s cheek and pretended to gag for the camera. The last picture they took was with (Y/N) in the middle, holding Steve and Bucky close, each of them with a content and loving look on their faces. When Steve shuffled out to retrieve the photos and find the girls, Bucky pulled (Y/N) back in and onto his lap before he had the chance to leave the booth. “Whatcha doin’ Buck?” He asked softly, his cheeks growing warm. Bucky smirked slightly and cupped his cheek. “Just wanted a moment alone with you. You look very handsome tonight. You’re a whole dish.. you know that right?.” He said quietly before leaning forward, capturing his lips with his own. (Y/N) froze for a moment before melting into the kiss with his hand on Bucky's cheek, and the other placed gently on his chest as he felt his quickening heartbeat beneath his fingertips. He was so enraptured by his moment with Bucky, he missed the soft clicks of the camera, capturing their stolen moments. At that moment, no one else existed for them. They were wrapped up in their own safe little bubble. (Y/N) smiled into the kiss as Bucky pulled him closer against himself. For the first time in his life, (Y/N) felt hope, but most noticeably, he could taste the rebellion in his kiss. Whatever trouble he got in for this was worth it to him because his boy, his James Barnes, was worth all the trouble in the world. As they shared this tender moment, he could only come to one conclusion. He would die for this boy but most importantly, he would live for him. No matter the cost.
