Chapter 3
Aliens.
There were aliens flying everywhere outside the coffee shop. To make matters worse, it looked like half the road had been turned to ruble. The carnage that seemed to happen in the mere minutes I had been inside was immense, and It seemed that as the seconds went on, more and more aliens showed up.
I was absolutely scared out of my mind, So you know what I did?
I sat down.
I popped a squat right outside the cafe door and concentrated. You see, constantly being on my feet required concentration, so when I sat the mental energy that I had available to me in order to use my powers grew immensely.
First things first, I felt around with my powers about a block or so, the limit to my senses, and could feel that there where thousands of these alien things. My powers kind of worked like a nerve system when I did this, going from one metallic item to the next. It wasn't insanely accurate, but I could get a general read of the area-because so many items in the city had traces of Metal. Kind of like a magnetic field of sorts.
I wasn't expecting all the information that I got from the aliens though. I could somehow tell that they had metal components in their hovercrafts and weapons, but knew they were not of this earth and useless to me.
It was quite a strange feeling, knowing something was a metal, but it being to foreign for me to use. The components of it were similar enough, but somehow I knew instinctively that I couldn't use it.
As I felt out more, I could also tell that the police were about to show up in seconds to this exact spot.
Realistically, they could do nothing. They had poor aim and ineffective guns. However, since I was here? let's just say I had a superiority complex for a reason.
Guess I could put expert alien fighter on my resume now.
As soon as the cops arrived, a giant convoy of around 12 cars, they did as I predicted and shot at the aliens as much as they could.
Further proving me right, the guns did nothing. They either needed bigger guns, or more precise attacks. Luckily, I could supply both of those things.
Quickly feeling around, I gathered all of the slugs that were fired and formed them into hundreds of needle thin like rods that I used to thread through the weak spots of the aliens armor.
One by one they were falling to the ground like flies, and because the cops were stupid, they thought it was them. They didn't even notice the lanky brown haired girl that weirdly sat criss cross outside the coffee shop, not 5 meters from them.
"Keep shooting boys!" The cop yelled out, " we are making some leeway!"
I rolled my eyes.
So on they went, not knowing that as soon as the bullets left their guns, I had used them as my own personal ammo. It was quite fun actually, finally using my powers for something, but as time passed the swarms got thicker and I realized we were soon to be outmatched.
It didn’t help that I could feel an oncoming headache from my concentrative state.
This moment of clarity was also pared with a giant man in a Red, white, and blue suit dropping from the sky onto one of the flipped cop cars.
"You need men in these buildings." He called out, "There are people inside and they will be running right into the line of fire. You take them to the basement, or to the subway. You keep them OFF the streets. I need a perimeter as far back as 39th"
It was captain America. The very guy who my dad had tried to turn me into, in the flesh. You'd think I'd be resentful, and that I’d Blaine him as the reason why my dad was gone, but I had went through some pretty intense therapy and knew the only person I should blame was my father.
It didn't make me want him back any less, but I knew where to direct blame where blame was due.
Unfortunately the cops didn't seem to understand this concept, because as soon as cap had dished out his orders, the cop in front of them had said very Accusatorially,
"Why The hell should I take orders from you?"
The next moment played out in seconds.
A bus had exploded from behind cap, and as the cops cowered down, thee giant aliens had appeared and surrounded him. With a lightning fast roundhouse kick, a toss of his shield, and a swift uppercut, the aliens were down in seconds.
Seeing this, the cops quickly followed captain America's orders. Unfortunately, as he was working with them more in more detail, he had left himself open.
Now, the events that unfolded next could have played out very differently. I could have let Captain America get hurt, as retribution for my dad, or I could have used a door from the cop car. But I could sense the metal in Captain America's shield, it felt so lush and beautiful, and it had been calling to me the entire time I had been there, so I made a decision.
I ripped the shield from his hands, making him Yelp, and hovered it right behind him- to where an alien had snuck up to. I then formed the shield into a spear and rammed it into the aliens chest. Simultaneously I had sharpened the end of both of my crutches and shot them into the two other aliens that were hiding and waiting to ambush.
I had returned the shield to caps hands slower than I had returned my crutches to me, in hope that the cops nor the man in blue would notice their origin, but as I floated myself up to my feet I felt eyes on me.
Captain America was staring right at me, and he had seen me levitate my legs off the ground. In that moment I thought he would rush over to me and demand who I was, but luckily the police Sargent had called his name- giving me a second to get away.
I ran back into the coffee shop.
Jordan rushed over to me to look out the windows. "Jordan! What is going on out there? I heard explosions! Oh my god are you ok? Why are you still here? I thought you left minuets ago!!!?!"
I slumped into her arms, knowing I had over done it. I definitely couldn't use my powers to walk anymore, my concentration was shot.
Looks like my gran was right to suggest the crutches today.
"Uh, no time to explain, but you need to get everyone into the basement... uh aliens are attacking."
Sam looked at me incredulously. "Aliens? What?"
I huffed, " I don't know Sam! But Captain America was literally right outside, and he said to get to the basements. I have to check on my grandparents."
She looked like she was going to argue with me, but she knew I was a Taurus and that it was useless.
"GO!" I yelled, and hobbled out the back door of the shop, being carful not to catch Captain America's eye again.
I hadn't necessarily lied to Sam, I was going to check up on my grandparents, but not until I knew for sure what was going on-which meant I had to go deeper into the city.
Staying to the side allies and small streets, I had gone fairly long without running into one of the walkers(a term I liked to call the bigger aliens that didn't fly around), and in general the flyers didn't give me the time of day.
I had gone a bit not using my powers, just crutching through the city streets as fast as one could, but eventually, I felt my powers return to me as I took in the situation. They weren't at 100%, 70% even, but I needed to use them to get a better idea of my surroundings.
For one thing, it didn't look good. I was able to surmise from my walk around the city, and my powers, that the entry point of these alien was right above Stark tower. No doubt, the guy had gotten himself into something bigger than he could have dealt with on his own.
It was no surprise that I had seen Captain America fighting then, as Tony and him were probably putting together some sort of superhero fighting team.
Cute.
I may have even seen Thor at some point, which made more sense now, but I was too busy trying to keep from being noticed.
Turning yet another corner, I skidded to a stop and put together a barrier of metal from the rubble on the ground to hide behind. On the street right in front of me I saw a woman with guns, a guy with a bow and arrow, Iron man, thor, and once again, captain America. I shuffled closer trying not to make a sound.
The women with red hair snapped her head in my direction, but after seeing no one, she looked away.
" what is it Natasha", the guy with the arrows said, "you see something?"
"I-" she faulted for a bit, Looking back to where I was. "Don't think so, Clint."
He narrowed his eyes and seemed to follow her gaze to where I was sitting, shitting bricks mind you!
"Ah well, I don't see anything either."
I let out a breath, and at this, I saw Steve look to where I was as well. I was to far away to tell, but apparently he had smiled.
Tony turned to the group and they whispered out a plan(much to my dismay), they talked for only seconds and after they had broken their huddle, the woman ran to stark tower and Tony Stark flew up into the air.
I couldn't tell what he was doing, but it sure looked like a suicide mission. He was to far away for me to feel the state of the metal in his suit anymore, but I did get a horrible feeling in my stomach from looking at him. As he reached higher and higher it got worse, to the point that even I felt sick. However, his teammates were cheering. They were yelling him on, and I didn't understand.
He was going to die, I could feel it.
Just as he reached beyond my line of vision, I saw the portal with all the aliens flying out of it close up. The aliens fell to the ground.
"Sun of a gun" I heard Captain America say, as he saw Tony fall from the portal in the sky. He seemed to be happy at seeing Stark, but all I could focus on was him failing and not slowing down.
"He's not slowing down." Apparently Thor thought the same as me.
Thor revved up his hammer, but I saw a flash of green in my vision and a plan came to mind. I sat down quickly, feeling Stark just beyond my reach, but he wasn't my target. Not yet at least.
I quickly formed up a huge hunk of metal, about the size of a toilet. I then flew it over right besides the hulk and wacked him in the head.
This got his attention real quick.
Forming the metal into an arrow I pointed to Tony falling from the sky, and The hulk seemed to get the message. Jumping from one building to the next, like a green humanoid King Kong, the hulk went to catch Iron man from splatting on the ground.
Luckily, during my little hulk interaction, I was able to slow Iron Man's decent enough to where the hulk could catch him. If I hadn't been so exhausted from crutching around the city, I maybe could have stopped him myself, but I didn't want to risk it. Tony was too important to today's society. So I let the big green guy get all the glory.
Once Tony was back on the ground, he had murmured something about someone kissing him, and I took that as a cue to leave.
Whatever those guys had going on in terms of a super hero team, I knew there was no room for a 14 year old kid. They were all so cool. They didn't need to sit to use the extent of their powers.
I was jealous. I too wanted to help.
But I knew how to pick my battles, and I knew once I got home I would have one called, 'angry grandma yells at me for missing school, even though aliens took over New York' and it would be my most challenging battle yet.
