Doctor Stephen Strange could feel a headache coming on. Not the sort that would go away with Advil or ibuprofen, but the sort that would linger despite any remedies he threw at it. You know, the psychosomatic sort. The sort that was brought on by emotional distress, in this case, sheer annoyance, the source of which was Tony Stark.
The man he now sat across from, all while Stephen wished that someone else had his job.
“So,” Tony Stark said, the rest of the other Avengers present turning to look at him as the billionaire leaned forwards. “How much of a threat are we talking?”
Stephen took a little breath, maintaining his neutral expression despite how much he wished he could kick the other man nine ways to Sunday. But that wouldn’t be very diplomatic of him. Given that they now had to work together.
“One that could wipe out the entire galaxy.” He thumbed the Eye of Agamotto which hung around his neck, thinking of the little green stone he knew resided within. “Which, for obvious reasons, is a pretty big threat. So if you’ve got any big guns to bring out, now’s the time, Stark.”
“We might have one,” Natasha Romanoff said, looking uncertainly at Steve Rogers. “Or rather, two.”
“Two?” Stephen raised an eyebrow, waiting for her to continue.
“We haven’t heard from the Asgardians in about four years,” Doctor Banner said, although he didn’t sound too cut up about it. “We don’t even know how to contact them.”
“They had a laptop at one point, didn’t they?” Agent Romanoff reminded him, but Stark shook his head.
“They left it at the compound.”
“What are we talking about?” Doctor Strange really didn’t like being left out of the loop.
“We’ve come in contact with two of the infinity stones ourselves,” Rogers explained. “Currently, the Tesseract is in the possession of Loki of Asgard, and the soul stone is in possession of y/n of Vormir.”
Stephen was silently regretting every little incident that had led him to this sitting room. “You gave the Tesseract, one of the most powerful objects in the universe, to a god who has tried to take over the world once before?”
“Thor and his girlfriend were with him when he left. I haven’t heard anything, so I assume he’s on the straight and narrow,” Stark commented, taking a sip of tea that apparently didn’t agree with him, grimacing.
“His wife now, actually,” Agent Romanoff corrected, brushing her red hair back.
“Oh, they got married?” Stark looked surprised. “I didn’t know gods did that. How did you know that?”
“I was invited to the ceremony two years ago as y/n’s maid of honour. It was on Asgard, really just the most beautiful thing you can imagine. They had a sword fight as part of their reception.”
“No kidding? Why wasn’t I invited?”
“Okay.” Stephen held up a hand. “Now that we’re done with that nice little catch-up, how can we get them back here?”
“There isn’t really any way we can get in touch with them,” Doctor Banner said apologetically. “It’s not like they have cell service on Asgard.”
“So you just let not one, but two infinity stones waltz off with unreliable keepers with absolutely no way of getting them back?” Forget the headache, Stephen was close to having an aneurysm.
“It wasn’t like any of us could wield them,” Captain Rogers said. “Plus, they said they’d return if we really needed them.”
“Well we really need them now.” Stephen sighed, rubbing his temples.
Stark checked his watch. “Hey, if we could possibly postpone this, my kid is going to Paris for a trip of sorts and he won’t stop texting me about it so…”
“You have a kid?” That made Stephen pause.
“Not so much his kid as a surrogate son,” Banner said. “He’s a bit of a science genius of sorts. Also a superhero. Don’t know if you’ve heard of Spiderman, but-”
“None of this is relevant right now!” Stephen said, raising his voice. “We need to figure out how to stop this!”
As he spoke, he saw a golden shimmer out the corner of his eye and turned, looking just behind Banner as a girl, no more than twenty-five or so, stepped out of thin air, holding the hand of none other than Loki, the God of Mischief.
Loki was clutching the Tesseract, a mischievous grin on his face, and the same dangerous intellect Stephen knew Loki possessed was echoed in the girl’s eyes. She had a black ring with a green gemstone and golden detailing on her ring finger, and he realized she could be none other than y/n, Loki’s wife. From Vormir, Rogers had said.
Looking at her, Stephen knew there was a lot more to her heritage than just Vormir, as she seemed to glow with sheer power, and it wasn’t just from the orange gem hanging around her neck.
Even as the portal they’d stepped through closed, the couple remained hand-in-hand, and as Stephen watched, y/n gave Loki an absolutely beaming smile. To his surprise, the god returned it in full.
“So,” she said, a pair of swords appearing on her back. “We heard you needed us?”
