Cookie monster

You are a simple citizen just trying to get some groceries. You really didn’t plan on summoning a demon while trying to pronounce a new food brand name the store had in stock, yet here you are.

The hulking being materializes a few feet away and looks around, disoriented. From the way smoke and steam raises from their surface I can say they are getting progressively pissed. The hissing sound it emits is a pretty good clue, too.

An elderly human lady shrieks and faints, decking her head on one of the shelves in the progress. Her trolley hits shelves on the opposite side of an alley, sending a few bags flying.

My friend sighs heavily, gives me a pointed look and comes straight to the fallen human, aiming to heal brain damage. She was always nice, helpful and considerate for people around, much more so than me.

The demon jumps out of her way, almost toppling over a whole row of produce. All eyes, wide with spine-chilling dread, are trained on a young seraph. She ignores him, as this is my mess to straighten up. He (now the pronoun is obvious) has to be pretty low in the pecking order to be summoned with just a name, without ritual or sacrifice. The demon, certainly calculating the chance of survival if he attacks as zero despite great size difference, sensibly tiptoes away, never turning his back to my friend. Of course, it means he doesn’t look where he’s going.

“Hi” is the only thing I manage to say before demon jumps up in fright, spins to me, gets almost violet from stress, grabs my arm in his claw-y paw (rude) and dashes out, clamping another paw around my mouth when I try to protest (very rude). He slips into alcohol alley and puts me down, crouching by the corner to make sure we aren’t being followed. Elated, he turns to me, baring his teeth in annoyance Teeth, I have to admit, a baboon would be proud of.

Luckily the store is practically empty at this hour, or Cassidy would need to heal many more head injuries.

“What in Nine Hells do you think you are doing?” he growls, trying to intimidate me by stopping less than a foot away and showing off his musculature. He’s not much successful; I am but baffled. Has he not a True Sight like most creatures from Below after all? Even then, my aura should be enough a hint for him to drop this behaviour.

“Look, I’m sorry for summoning you. It was an accident, I was just trying to pronounce this weird brand of cookies and you suddenly showed up” I explain calmly, which throws him off. “Can you just go back? We are shopping for a girls’ night and it’s a closed party.”

Cookies?!” he bristles, teeth gritting. He bends roughly to my eye-level, inhales deeply, hoarding air for an angry roar… suddenly, his nostrils move and his face blanks. “Y-yeah” the demon chokes out, inching away to more respectable distance. “Enjoy your party” he mumbles, and disappears in a short burst of flames. Which, A) cheap show-off, and B) it stinks (yuck), but at least an ugly black string connecting us is now gone.

I return to Cassidy; alcohol was near chocolate, so I got most sweets I wanted and some of what I know she and others like. Demon’s cookies we left alone, we don’t want the guy showing out of the blue (or red, in this instance) on us.

Seraph frowns her tiny nose at me.

“Heavens, you reek” she complains “and he left a black dot in your aura.” Really? I didin’t know it was possible. ”A bath with holy water for you, ma mademoiselle” she tuts.

I snort. It’s not like it’d do me any harm; besides, we were already planning on going full-spa. Jokingly, I bow in a courtly manner. “As my guardian angel orders” I jest, swift to run away when she reaches for a bag of hard candies. Loud cackle rushes from my throat as I hear her cussing at me.

The party’s gonna be awesome.
