Awkward Assumptions
Rebecca and Steve are BFF. Often mistaken for a couple, Becca takes great delight in correcting them. - Anonymous
“I’m just saying, Perri House is the most romantic restaurant in the city!” Becca said as she and Steve strolled through the business district.
“Yes, but Peg prefers Rodolfo’s.” Steve said, slowing down as they passed a jewelry store.
“You wanna go in?” Becca said gesturing to the door of the shop.
“Yeah… what the hell looking won’t hurt.” Steve said holding the door open for her.
“Bonjour Monsieur, Mademoiselle, how can I help you today?” The man behind the counter said. “Perhaps something for the lady?”
“We’re just looking, thank you.” Steve smiled as he examined the jewelry in the case. They were all stunning antique pieces, trinkets that once upon a time when they had been new, Steve could never afforded.
“Can I see that one right there please?” Steve said pointing to a lovely engagement ring that had been popular when Steve was younger.
“An excellent choice, Monsieur.” The jeweler said opening the case and throwing a glance at Rebecca who was admiring some of the more modern pieces across the room.
“She will love it.”
“Yes, I think she will, hey Becca come look at this!” Steve called as the brunette came over to see what Steve was doing.
“Oh my God, is that an engagement ring?” Becca asked when she spotted the ring.
“Sure is, what do you think?” Steve asked holding out the ring for Rebecca to examine.
“It’s beautiful…”
“Congratulations, Mademoiselle, may you two have a long and happy life together.” The man behind the counter said with a friendly smile, in response to that Rebecca laughed out loud.
“Oh, Oh no we’re… we’re not a couple,” Rebecca laughed.
“Oh forgive me I just assumed-”
“Most people do, but we’re just best friends,” Becca said, “this…” she held up the ring at this point, “is for his girlfriend.”
“Well, I am sure that she will love it,” the jeweler said turning to Steve, “So will you take the ring, Monsieur?”
Blushing Steve nodded, “I’ll take it.”
