"Sydney? We've arrived at Wakanda, could you get off your phone now?" Pepper asked from where she was slipping her StarkTablet into her purse.
"Of course mom," Sydney said with a smile.
"Remember Sydney, you have to be a polite young lady to the royal family. It's bad enough that they have to deal with your father." Pepper said as she smoothed her jacket.
"Hey! I heard that! Anyways, Sydney is a girl, she'll get in even more trouble than me!" Tony shouted from wherever he was on the plane.
"I'll be on my best behavior," Sydney replied, hiding their small wince. When the plane landed, the three stepped out to greet the others.
"Ah... Tony! How are you, my friend?" T'Challa greeted.
"Hey there, Royal Kitty Cat! I'm doing great! So I wanted to talk about...." Tony started rambling about an idea with T'Challa. Ramonda and Pepper gave the two The Look before turning back to each other.
"Pepper, it's great to see you. How have you been?" Ramonda asked with a warm smile.
"I've been doing great, thanks for asking. How about you?"
"I've been wonderful. You remember my daughter, Shuri."
"Of course, it's wonderful to see you again, Shuri. This is my daughter, Sydney."
At this point, both kids were awkwardly dragged in front of their mothers.
"Why don't we leave the two of them to get to know each other?"
And with that, the two teenagers were just kind of staring at each other as all of the adults disappeared, other than the Dora Milaje of course.
"Er. Um. My name is Sydney, but you can call me Syd, if you want of course. You don't have to if you don't want to. Not that you don't want to! Um... how are you?" Sydney stumbled through their introductions like the awkward turtle duck they are.
"I'm Princess Shuri of Wakanda, but you can just call me Shuri." Shuri said with a smirk, "And the better question is WHAT ARE THOSE!?!?"
"These. Are. My. CROCKS!" Syd replied with a grin.
"Syd, you and I are going to be great friends!"
"Hey Shuri, is there a workout room I could use?" Syd asked as she walked into Shuri's lab in her workout gear, a sports bra plus leggings. (AN: Lol, just wait.)
"Yeah, it's in th- HOLY SHIT!" Shuri yelled when she saw Syd.
"What!?"
"Holy hell, you have abs!"
Syd glanced down at her toned body.
"I mean, I guess I do? I'm sorry, am I showing too much skin? I can go change?" Syd asked, still the awkward turtle duck she is.
"No! You're fine! Uh, Nakia! Would you mind showing Syd to the training room?" Shuri exclaimed as a blush crept up her cheeks. Not that Syd noticed, seeing how she is both awkward and oblivious.
Shuri groaned as she dramatically collapsed into her chair.
"Your Highness? Are you alright?" Okoye asked from her post.
"Okoyeee..... I think I'm in love..." Shuri whined from where she had her arm flopped over her eyes.
"All due respect, but you have known Ms. Sydney for five days. Two of which she was half asleep because of jet lag."
"But she is so kind! And funny! And so smart! She can keep up with me in the lab even though it's entirely different tech than she's ever worked with! On top of that, she is so strong and beautiful! Like, she was able to lift stuff you and I struggle with! And did you see her abs? Or her arms? Her legs? She is so beautiful! And her awkwardness makes her so adorable!"
~~~~
"Hey, Syd! I brought you some water!"
"Thanks, Shuri!"
"How much were you just deadlifting just now?"
"Oh, I would say about 600, but it could have been more depending on the bar. Not my best though so I have to work on that."
"Oh, well, I'll let you get back to it!"
"Ok! Thanks for the water! See you in a bit!"
~~~~
"Holy fuck, Okoye, she deadlifted 600 fucking pounds. That's like! Four people! FOUR!"
It was a nice afternoon in Shuri's lab. Syd was curled up on one of the counters drawing while Shuri tinkered on one of her projects. Nakia, Okoye, Ayo, and M'yra were the guards for today. (The four guards that most defiantly were not playing Uno and Go Fish in the corner. Absolutely not.)
"Hey, Shuri?" Syd abruptly asked as he looked up from his drawing.
"Yeah, Syd?" Shuri replied.
"Do you know what genderfluid and nonbinary are?" Syd asked as he stared down at his drawing. It was a drawing of what was in front of him; Shuri tinkering and the guards playing Go Fish.
"Yeah, actually. There is actually quite a few palace staff that are either genderfluid, nonbinary, or both." Shuri wiped her hands on a cloth as she walked over to Syd, who was still curled up on the counter. "Why did you wanna know?" Shuri placed a hand on either side of Syd's curled-up position while facing him.
"Wel- Um- I- Uh-" Syd tried to say.
"Syd? Is there something you want to tell me?" Shuri asks with an encouraging smile. The Dora Milaje had paused their game and were watching the two intently.
~~
(A brief interlude with your favorite Dora Milaje.)
"I bet five on Syd being genderfluid," Nakia whispered.
"Five that their nonbinary," Ayo says back.
"Ten that their both," M'yra offers.
"Twenty that Syd is both, and that Shuri confesses," Okoye responds.
"Deal."
~~
"Syd? Is there something you want to tell me?" Shuri asks with an encouraging smile.
"Yeah, um- I'm uh- Uh- I-I'm-" By now Syd had frustrated tears dripping down his face.
"Syd?" Shuri asks as she wipes tears away, "Are you.... genderfluid or nonbinary?"
Syd nodded his head with a small whine.
"Okay, are you genderfluid?" A nod. "Are you nonbinary?" A so-so sign. "Okay, what are your pronouns right now?"
"H-He/H-Him," Sebastian said.
"Okay! Do you ever use They/Them?"
A nod.
"How about She/Her?"
Another nod.
"What about xe/xeir or other neopronouns?"
A third nod. "I-I sometimes u-use xe/xi/xeir a-and fae/fier/fem."
"Alright, do you use different names for different days or do you use the same all the time?" Shuri smiled as she took Sebastian's hands.
"I use Sydney o-on She/H-Her, I'v-I've thought of using Sebastian on He/Him d-days, either C-Camryn or Ba-Bastian on The-They/Them days, Onyx on Xe/Xier, an-and Raven on Fae/Fier."
"Okay, Sebastian, that's a mighty fine name you've got there. I was wondering if I could also ask you something?"
"Ye-Yeah, of course!" Sebastian quickly responded. Shuri gently lifted Sebastian's chin so he would look her in the eyes.
"Sebastian, since the day I met you when we were both strangers introduced by our mothers, I could tell that we would be great friends. Especially when you responded to my meme. And I remember when you walking into my lab that day asking about the gym. I felt like my fact has redder than a fire. And then it hit me, in less than a week, I managed to fall in love with you. And I fell further and further in love as the weeks went on. So, Sebastian, I know we have only known each other for a little over two months, but would you make me a very happy person and consider going out on a date with me?" Shuri waited with bated breath as Sebastian visibly blue-screened. Then she was tackled into a tight hug as they miraculously landed on a very soft chair that wasn't there before. (Hmmm... I wonder how. ;) )
"Yes! Yes! A quadrillion times yes!" Sebastian shouted as he squeezed Shuri.
For their first date, the two spent it in the lab. Together they made Bastian a pronoun bracelet that worked similar to a mood ring. It changed color depending on the pronouns for the day. Red, for She/Her, Yellow for They/Them, Blue for He/Him, Pink for Fae/Fier, and Grey for Xe/Xier. If it was a mix between pronouns, it would be half one color, half the other.
On top of the cool color changes, Shuri tricked it up with a bunch of other things, to make it work many things, such as a watch, vital signs monitor, stun gun, yo-yo, mini-phone, and/or mini-computer. Camryn's two favorite functions were the camera function and the grappling hook function. Once they finished, Shuri took the bracelet and kneeled on one knee in front of Bastian.
"Bastian? Would you make me the happiest girl alive and officially become my joyfriend?" Shuri asked as she struggled not to burst out giggling at how silly both of them were.
"Of course, Shuri!" Camryn responded while failing to hide their giggles
