Chapter 3
While everybody was still having fun Bucky noticed that Steve was still sulking at their table so he went and checked upon him.” You okay bud?” he asked Steve while patting his shoulder. Steve just looked up at him and said “I’m fine Bucky, go and have fun I’m enjoying my drink here.” He smiled, but it was a timid one. Bucky gave him a last glance before heading again. He understood that weddings aren’t exactly an occasion Steve is fond of attending, not after what happened between him and Nat.
After Bucky interrupted Steve’s reminiscing of the past, he once again caught himself drowning back to the time he and Nat started dating.
(Flashback)
After getting back from the event Steve immediately called the number Natasha gave him, on the third ring she finally picked up. “Hey, stranger,” Natasha answered and Steve could picture her smiling. “Hi, Nat it's Steve.” He said with a big smile on his face. “Oh I know, you’re the only person I gave my number to today. We’re just packing up.” What she said brought another smile on his face and told her that he was just checking up on her if she got home safe. After that phone call, it was followed by many more and they finally started dating after a few months.
Steve remembered every moment he spent with her, every dinner, every movie they’ve seen together, he remembered how she got along with his friends, every kiss and hug they shared, it all flooded his memories and it pains him that he had caused her so much pain.
He then remembered the moment he cherished the most with her. It was a Sunday morning, Steve woke up and just looked at the woman in his arms still sound asleep. It was at that moment when he realized that he wouldn’t ever let her go, he started kissing her plump lips and felt her waking up. They just glanced at each other’s eyes then Steve uttered the words “Will you marry me?” Nat shocked looked at him with wide eyes and suddenly got up and bolted her way to the bathroom only wearing Steve’s shirt. Steve just looked at her in amusement as she hurriedly brushed her teeth and went her way to the bed again. She looked at Steve and asked “What was the question again?” instead of answering her Steve also bolted to the bathroom and got something. He had a dental floss with him and got a strand, he took Natasha’s hand in his and started tying the thread around her ring finger. “My mom used to tie my finger with a thread because I would always forget things, so I’m going to tie yours with this so you wouldn’t forget that I am asking you today to spend the rest of your life with me.” “So Natasha Romanoff, will you make me the happiest man and marry me?” Natasha grabbed her camera on the side table and takes a photo of her hand and Steve saying, “So I wouldn’t forget the person I love who I said yes to,” Natasha said crying and gave Steve a passionate kiss.
Steve was smiling remembering that day, he was fine and all when he suddenly remembered the supposed to be wedding day it was three years ago when he last saw her. It was the last time he saw her beautiful smile, she was walking down the aisle in her beautiful white gown with her red fiery hair up and adorned with intricately designed veil, everything was beautiful she was perfect everything was supposed to be perfect, but he did something nobody expected a Steve Rogers would do. He ran, like the coward he is he just bolted out of the church without looking back at the woman he loves, the woman who has his heart in her hands.
(End of flashback)
Steve suddenly felt like he couldn’t breathe, he needed to get away from there so he drove himself home despite being drunk and dropped on his bed. Remembering all those horrible things he did to Nat exhausted him and the much alcohol in his system made him fall asleep immediately.
