Chapter 6

Loki's heart nearly stopped when he heard his neighbor's muffled voice tell him that his baby was sick. He knew it had to be serious if Fen went for help. He just wanted to go, but he had to finish his first shift at least... When the clock chimed 12:00 a.m., he grabbed his bag and made to leave.

"Where do you think you're going? You're supposed to be working double tonight?" His boss Thanos growled.

"My kid's in the hospital. I have to go." Loki prayed that Thanos would be reasonable.

But Thanos was not a reasonable man. "Are you kidding me? You're the worst bartender I have, and you think you can just waltz out of here?"

"My kid's sick!" Loki was not in the right headspace to deal with this.

"I don't care. Your number one priority should be making me money! I don't care about your life outside of this club."

"Look, I'll pick up double shifts all week--"

"No, if you leave tonight, you're fired."

Loki froze. He couldn't afford to lose this job, but he couldn't let his baby be in the hospital alone. "Fine, then." He walked out with as much dignity that he could muster.

This couldn't be happening.

His baby was sick and in the hospital which meant more bills.

On top of that, he'd just lost his best-paying job.

How on earth was he going to get through this? He'd have to find a way. His kids needed him.

His feet were aching by the time he made it to Saint Mary's. "I'm looking for my son. My neighbor brought him in."

The nurse directed him to the right room.

Loki rushed in to find his tiny baby covered in wires and tubes. "Sleipnir!"

"You must be the dad," a familiar voice startled him badly.

Loki couldn't take his eyes off of his baby. "What's wrong with him?"

“Pneumonia. Fen caught it early. It's going to be ok. He's reacting well to the medication, and he's strong."

Loki shook.

His baby shouldn't have to be strong!

He didn't know what they were going to do, but something had to give. He couldn't keep doing this. No matter how hard he worked or how much he gave, it was never ever enough.

His kids deserved better.
