He broke his promise.

He thought about her when he lost, when he failed her.
Her face haunted him throughout prison.
When his mother died, he thought about how he lost her, too.
When he faked his death yet again, he thought about going back to her, but he couldn't.
When she chopped off her own hand, she thought about his story about falling into an abyss to die, and surviving instead.
When she decided to kill Thanos, she tried to find him, but she couldn't.
When she beat Gamora, she thought about how she'd told him she would.
When she left to go after Thanos, she vowed to tear the universe apart to find him once she was done.
When she got caught, she thought about how he would have gotten them out of it.
When Thor found him, he thought about running, finding her.
When he worked his way to power on Sakaar, he thought he'd found a world for them.
When he saw the Tesseract, he thought he finally had the means to find her.
When his planet was being destroyed, he thought about how they'd find their own world.
When Thanos found them, he hoped she'd be ther, but also hoped she'd escaped.
When Thanos snapped his neck, he though how he was sorry.
When she found out he was dead, she cried as soon as she was alone.
When she met his brother, it was only Thor's grief that kept her from killing him.
When she went back in time, it was all she could do to keep from going after him.
When she killed herself, she thought about how he'd never know, or maybe he would, she didn't know.
When she left with her new family, she thought about him.
She finally said goodbye.
