Chapter 2
Loki and Murphy sat on their beds, Loki was reading a book called: “ How to pretend to die without actually dying. ”
“What is that you’re reading?” Murphy snorted, trying to see if the title was actually what she thought it was.
“Oh, I’m proofreading something.” Loki closed the book but kept his thumb between the pages. “It’s my own!”
Murphy laughed, “Ah! I heard rumors about you dying, and then undying!”
Loki smiled, “The avengers seem to keep saying that to everyone they meet!”
Murphy grinned, “Do you have an answer for the mail, by the way?”
Loki’s face turned dark, “Do we have the right to talk about it with outsiders?”
Murphy tilted her head, “Probably not, that would make it possible for us to tell about the… victim.”
Suddenly there was a bang on the door, they sighed in unison.
“Agent Mobius here, I want to talk to you about your… interesting mission.”
The door banged open, and one man stepped inside.
He had a small grey mustache, matching with his short grey hair. He had small wrinkles, and green eyes.
“Mobius?” Murphy asked the man, “I know someone called Mobius.”
“Mobius M. Mobius, to be precise!” Mobius smiled, making Loki look up, “Your first and last name are both Mobius?” He laughed, “I’ve never heard of something like that before!”
Mobius smiled, “Well, actually… The M in Mobius M. Mobius stands for Mobius too…”
Loki laughed loudly, and Murphy couldn’t help but snicker. “Well, at least you have a surname!” Murphy added.
“Yes, about that…” Mobius grabbed a file from a bag he had carried inside. “I think it would be best to give you one. I know about 6 others who share your name, 2 of which are females… ”
Murphy groaned, “There is a reason I don’t have one!”
Mobius sat down, “Tell me, please!” He clicked with his small blue pen, to which a little point with ink came out. He smiled happily, and pushed his pen on a piece of paper.
“When I was born, I had only a mother. My father had been killed a week earlier, by the police. I was born in jail. My mother chose not to give me a surname, she thought it would help me, my father was ‘famous’, and having the same last name as a criminal didn’t seem like a good plan to my mother. She died a day after I was born, and I had only a piece of paper with my name, and hers.”
Mobius looked up, “Do you know your mothers last name?”
Murphy shook her head, “No. And even if I did, I don’t want to share a name with my mother, not because I don’t love her, or think that I wouldn’t have. She wanted me to be safe, and I think that she’s right. It might get me into problems, whatever way possible.”
Mobius nodded, “Alright.”
Loki smiled, “I love that you might have even more difficulties with your parents than me, I mean, you don’t even have them!”
Murphy snorted, “Think carefully of what you say next.” She tried not to smile, but Mobius could clearly see that the two had developed a great bond in less than a day.
“Anyway...” Mobius smiled, “Name?”
“No.” Murphy smiled, “If all of the others have names, why give me one? When I can just be: ‘Murphy, insert surname’.” She smiled.
“Well, okay then. We’ll leave it as it is, for now.” Mobius looked back to his papers. “I am not here to discuss your name. I am here to discuss the offer. What do you think?”
Neither one of the prisoners answered, they looked at each other. Mobius tilted his head slightly, “What?”
“Well… ” Loki looked at Murphy, who nodded. “It’s difficult. I have never done anything good.”
“Apart from the time that you tried to kill Thanos.”
“Anything good that didn’t save my life.”
“Okay, good point, continue!”
“And doing this is like, something good that doesn’t save my life.” Loki smiled at his hands, thinking about all his evil tricks. He looked up, “I would like to discuss it with my brother.”
“I am afraid that that is not possible.” Mobius stood up, looking apologetically at Loki.
“That’s what we thought...” Murphy stood up too. “We would like to know more details about the mission.”
“Ah! Great reminder, thank you!” Mobius smiled, “I have something for you!” He handed them two separate envelopes.
“Again?” Loki groaned. Mobius smiled, “Yes again.”
Murphy opened the envelope.
Murphy <insert surname>,
This is a letter to inform you more about your mission.
Agent Mobius M. Mobius will assist you, by bringing you to the places you need to go, and by giving you weapons.
You will be training (if you accept the mission) the coming two months, after that, we will see when will be the best time to kill the victim. Bordeaux Rouxelle should be killed as soon as possible. If there is any chance for you to try to escape, you will not be killed. You will be shot so that there is no chance for you to escape. Then you will be put back in jail, and your sentence will be thirty years added.
If you do not choose to accept this mission. Nothing will change. If one of you accepts the mission, we will look for another candidate, if we can’t find any, the mission will be ignored. If one of you tries to escape, the other will continue their sentence, and the mission will be ignored.
If the mission fails, but not due to one of you, you will have half of your sentence removed.
If you try to kill agent Mobius, the other candidate, or yourself, your sentence will be changed to a lifetime sentence.
Murphy looked up, after finishing the letter, a thought occurred to her. What if she tried to read agent Mobius’ mind. She smiled, and focused.
They seem alright. Yeah they do. Difficulties with the last name though.
He wrote something down.
I guess we’ll just leave that.
He looked up, checking to see if they had finished reading. Murphy pretended to continue, he looked down, and she looked up.
Loki seems like a funny guy. Murphy seems cool too. But wow, Loki is not bad-looking.
She saw him smile. He looked up, and looked at Loki.
Just look at that hair!
Murphy grinned, she looked up and coughed, “I understand.”
“Okay. Do you have an answer?” Mobius quickly looked away from Loki.
“I have a question,” Murphy looked at Loki, who had finished reading, “Can we change our minds after agreeing or disagreeing?”
Mobius nodded, “Yes, but only before the training started.”
“I want to join. You’ll be the only guard there, right?” Loki asked Mobius, who nodded, but quickly added, “Yes, but that shouldn’t make you think that you can escape easier. There are guards around the building, but not near you. Unless you go somewhere you’re not supposed to.”
“I want to join too.” Murphy looked at Mobius. “Seems quite alright.”
“That's fantastic!” Mobius smiled, and wrote something down on his paper. “Now, quick convo,” he grinned, “about the two of you.”
Murphy and Loki looked to the side, staring at each other at the exact same time. They laughed, until Mobius coughed, trying to get their attention.
“You know each other.” He said, trying to see their reactions.
“Yeah.” Loki groaned. He wanted this 'convo' to be over as soon as possible. “We tried to kill each other once or twice.”
Murphy turned around to face Loki, “No. That’s not true,” she turned back to Mobius, “Loki tried to kill me once or twice, and I just defended myself!”
Mobius nodded and wrote something down, “Okay. Thank you, I know enough.”
And he walked away.
