A Mutant is Born

Eudora’s family knew she was different from the day she was born. As the last of five brothers and sisters, her parents knew a thing or two about babies.

“She never sleeps!” “She never eats!” “She never cries!”

She drove her parents mad, cooing in her crib all night. Soon the coos became words until she was speaking full sentences at only a few months old. Doctors and neighbors and news reporters came from afar to see the infant who spoke.

She crawled, then walked, then ran not long after. Her parents got invites by the dozen to get her on their hit television show. Her parents were very humbled by all the offers and attention but chose to live a quiet life with their children.

Once Eudora turned two, the blessing became a curse when she would fall into deep sleeps that could last days. The doctors didn’t know what was wrong with her. She soon was asleep more than she was awake and nothing could wake her.

At three years old she would enter a trance-like state and became able to do things her parents swore on their graves to keep hidden.

Her parents began to isolate even more. They hid Eudora from the world and kept her away from her brothers and sisters.

They locked her in the attic where she slept and read every book her parents could possibly find—from fantasy to physics to construction manuals.

Once she was six years old her parents knew they had to do something. They couldn’t keep her from kindergarten any longer without suspicion and it was clear she wouldn’t grow out of this “phase.” Scared to death of their daughter, they decided they needed to send her away.

That’s when they found the Reyes Foundation after weeks of scouring the web.

“Named after Dr. Cecilia Reyes who gave up her life for young mutants alike.”

It seemed like the best option—their only option.

In just a few days they had packed up Eudora’s things and were on the road. Luckily they were only a day’s drive from the meeting spot.

They corresponded with a Dr. Liberty the days leading up to their journey on a messaging website they had never heard of. Supposedly it was owned by the Reyes Foundation and therefore more secure.

That is when the doctor told them they must meet somewhere along the way, keeping the exact location of the facility secret.

Eudora’s parents soon found that everything about this Reyes Foundation was top secret. Before even getting through to the website itself they had to fill out multiple NDAs. Her mother questioned if that was even legal. Her father no longer cared. They prayed that this was best for their beloved daughter and took the leap of faith.
