Wilbur Messes Up A Bit (Surprise Surprise)
His patrol was quite normal, Wil would say. Just a couple of attempted convenience store robberies. Nothing out of the usual. It allowed him to have time to think about what happened back at supper as he jogged across rooftops. Wilbur had been a vigilante for a few years at this point. Ever since he discovered his powers, at the age of 14. Now some would consider this to be too young. But no one has accused their family of being normal. In fact, they were far from it.
Look at them, his dad has wings, his twin hears voices and is a master of every single weapon, Wil has siren-like powers. His youngest brother has fire powers and wings as well. They’re an odd bunch. But, Wil wouldn’t change it for the world.
Luckily he wasn’t too deep in thought or he would’ve missed a flash of movement on the rooftop across the street. He narrowed his eyes trying to make out the figure hunched over the edge of the other roof. He could see a long object that the person was holding but couldn't quite make it out.
Wanting to get a closer look to ensure there was no threat, Wil took out his grappling hook and shot it at the tall building next to the one the person was on. He swung over and jumped onto the lower building when he got close enough. As he approached the figure, he suddenly felt very glad he came to check.
The long object was a sniper gun. Thank goodness for his intuition. Although, it wasn’t normal that someone would be on a roof at this time of night. That should’ve been his first clue. The person was laying down on the roof, and Wil put on an extra burst of speed. When he was close enough, so that he didn’t have to yell, he used his power.
Wilbur didn’t know how to describe what the power felt like since he can’t use it on himself, but he could guess by using stories about the ancient sirens from Greek mythology. He guessed that his voice had a quality that could sound different to each person so they follow whatever he says. So when the sniper flinched when they heard Wil order them to faint he couldn't tell if it was from surprise or from his voice’s effect on him.
The sniper fell over the edge of the building with his gun which Wil hadn't anticipated happening. He ran to grab them and barely caught their wrist as they fell. The least he could do is make sure the guy didn't land on anything. He jumped down. There was nothing below the sniper but a man wearing sunglasses and carrying a briefcase, who looked up at him with surprise. He took off his sunglasses and Wil saw the face of Tony Stark.
“Shit!” he muttered under his breath. And Wil had thought that the incident with Tommy would be the last of their connections with the Avengers.
“And who would you be?” Stark asked. Wil blinked. He didn’t have a superhero name. What does he call himself?
“You can call me Siren.” Fuck. Why would he say that? It was incredibly cringey. It didn’t matter that it had something to do with his powers. It still sounded dumb. His family would never let him live this down.
Stark nodded. Oh, he was doomed. “Well, thank you, Siren-“ and before he could continue, Wil was off. After that disaster of an attempted assassination, Wilbur decided to cut his patrol short. A few blocks away he used his grappling hook to launch himself onto a roof. “Wait, come back!” He heard distantly in the background. Wil was proud that he only stumbled a bit.
He was hoping that Stark would be so confused that he wouldn’t be able to try and make him come back. But he forgot that this was Tony Stark, there was probably assassination attempts all the time.
Wilbur looked over his shoulder to find that Stark had suited up and was now flying after him
Great now I have to lose him, Wil thought as he jumped onto the next building. He had to come to a quick stop as Iron Man landed in front of him.
“Hey, would you stop for a -” Wil didn’t give him time to finish as he spun around and jumped into the alley below. A tire shop was just around the corner, if he could just get there he could probably be able to slip away. He didn’t want to use his power on Stark just in case he took it as a threat.
The buzzing of the mechanics of the Iron suit followed Wilbur as he sprinted down the alley and turned a sudden corner into the back room of the tire shop Phil worked at when they first moved to the US. Phil had gotten multiple jobs around the city and only kept them long enough to secretly install a secret escape route in them just in case something like this happened. He still worked at the mechanics’ shop by their house though.
As Wil slammed the door shut behind him he reached up to the lowered roof, opened the vent and climbed in. He could take this to the tunnel at the back of the shop. The light of the Iron Man’s arc reactor appeared as he entered the shop. Wil probably had 1 minute. He was confident that Stark wouldn’t look in the vent for a minute so he started silently humming a tune as he screwed on the vent again. The vent would drop him into the alley on the other side of the block. But before he did that he changed into the spare pair of clothes they had stashed in here.
Changing was cramped, but he could do it. When he dropped out of the vent, he just looked like a normal teen who was out way too late. His yellow sweater covered the top half of his suit, and his jeans covered the bottom part. He sadly had to leave behind his boots so he could change into sneakers, but he could always grab that tomorrow. Lastly, a simple red beanie covered his hair. He was completely disguised.
As he exited the alley, Wil saw the Iron Man suit soar out of the tire shop. These next few seconds are incredibly important. He crossed his gloved finger. He didn’t have anything to cover his gloved hands. Wil continued to walk down the street, he was humming the tune to his song ‘Your New Boyfriend’. The suit flew over his head. He would be lying if he said he didn’t flinch. But he seemed to be in the clear.
The walk back was calm. It wasn’t too chilly, since it was early autumn, but there wasn’t too much of a breeze. When he arrived back home, it was around 1:45 in the morning. He has definitely been up longer. Wil was expecting to just tip-toe back up to his room. But what he didn’t expect was his dad to be staring at him in the living room.
“Mind explaining why the sensor at one of the escape routes was triggered?” his dad asked. Well, shit.

Tony knew he had a fucked up sleep schedule. Everyone knows that he barely sleeps. It was not a secret. So it wasn’t a surprise that he couldn’t sleep and he went out to McDonald’s at midnight. Luckily the McDonalds closest to the Tower was still open.
He didn’t know why he brought the suit. Maybe it was because he still didn’t fully trust the ‘Rogue Avengers’, or maybe it was because it was New York. It isn’t the safest place on Earth, even with all the vigilantes running around.
All he wanted was some McDonald’s, and want to know what he got? A body falling from the sky. Ok, maybe he was being dramatic, but it did appear out of nowhere with a thump. Tony looked up, there was a person in a suit. He didn’t recognize it so it definitely was a vigilante. ‘What the fuck’ he thought. First, the new vigilante that Peter mentioned to him, now whoever this was. Tony knew it wasn’t the dude Peter talked about as his suit was not white and red. In fact, it was the exact opposite.
The suit was black and blue. The colours helped him blend in with the night. Even from a mile away, Tony could see the intricacy of the suit. Whoever made this poured their soul into it. He could see similarities between this suit and the suit of the other vigilante. Tony made a note of that. They had the same style with the knee/elbow pads and a hood with some sort of lens. Very cloak and dagger.
Before he could analyze it more, the vigilante dropped down. Tony took a step back. It was a bit sudden. The vigilante cursed when he took off his glasses. His voice had an unfamiliar accent. Probably European. The vigilante obviously hadn’t been expecting to save the one, and only, Tony Stark. One thing that he could get from this vigilante that he couldn’t get from the other was a name. Everyone needs a name, plus it would be easier for him to create a file about him.
“And who would you be?” he asked. To be honest, he wasn’t expecting an answer. Most heroes get their names from the news, and Tony hadn’t seen this guy on the news. Although he didn’t watch the news that often.
“You can call me Siren.” Tony saw him visibly flinch. It was painfully obvious that he came up with that on the spot. It wasn’t a horrible name to be fair. It was probably based around his powers like most heroes.
“Well, thank you, Siren-” he tried to say but the vigilante was off. The vigilante turned the corner. Apparently, he was not going to get his Mcdonald’s. Tony remembered that he had his suit and quickly suited up. “Wait come back!” Hopefully, he would listen and didn’t actually have to use the suit. Tony turned the corner just in time to see the vigilante use a grappling hook to pull himself onto a roof. Fuck. He just wanted a McDonald’s burger. His thrusters activated as he jumped. Soon he was flying after the vigilante. Thankfully, his suit was faster than a normal running pace.
“Hey, would you stop for a -” Tony tried, ok? You can’t say he didn’t try. Siren quickly spun around and dropped into the alley. Oh, for fuck sake, he thought. This kid, he was assuming he was relatively young if he could run that fast, would not give him a break. Tony quickly followed him and his suit took the impact as he jumped off the roof.
Just as he landed, he heard a door open. His head whipped around just in time to see Siren disappear into a local tire shop. He made a mental note to look into this shop. Siren probably wouldn’t have just ducked into a random shop.
His boots weren’t exactly the quietest as he walked into the shop. They clanked against the smooth floor. Siren seemed to have disappeared. Tony activated his repulsors. He highly doubted that the vigilante would attack him, but it wouldn’t kill him to be cautious. It seemed like Siren had disappeared. The shop was eerily quiet. Just the machines, shadows, and the sound of his footsteps against the floor.
From above him, he heard something humming a song. That made the ‘spook factor’ go all the way up. He didn’t recognize the song so he had F.R.I.D.A.Y record a clip of the tune for him to analyze later. It was hard to follow the humming as the shop was incredibly echoey.
By the time he had searched the entire place, there was no sign of Siren. The humming had also quickly disappeared. Tony took a deep breath. He could not believe Siren had slipped through his fingers. Tony flew out of the shop and towards the tower.
“F.R.I.D.A.Y could you run that clip of the humming and find the song?” Tony knew he was grasping for straws at this point but if the two vigilantes were connected then maybe they knew others too. And maybe he would be able to recruit them, they seemed pretty talented.
As he flew onto his landing pad at the Avengers Tower, Tony saw Rhodey in the lobby just inside. He walked towards Rhodey as his suit came off to reveal his usual clothing underneath.
“What are you doing up here this late?” Tony asked him.
Rhodey shrugged “I would ask the same thing but you’re always up”
Tony gave him a pointed look. He avoided the question.
“I saw you flying in the suit and was curious what was happening,” Rhodey said as he leaned back on the bar. “Was there a criminal on your fast food trip?”
Tony shrugged as he walked up to his computer to insert F.R.I.D.A.Y’s chip so she could find whatever the vigilante was humming faster. “Kind of. There was a sniper but an unregistered vigilante knocked him out before I even saw him.”
Tony could faintly see the red and blue lights out the window, the police must have just come to pick up the sniper.
“I’m trying to find him, I think he might know that winged guy from the bank that Peter found.” Tony had already told Rhodey about Peter’s news since he had been at the tower.
Rhodey looked intrigued. “And how would that be?” Tony had to think about how to respond. It was sort of a gut instinct.
“They seem to have the same kind of tech. Very good tech.” He explained. It was strange to say that out loud. Tony was so used to having the best tech, but he has to admit that these new guys pose a bit of competition. He would love to meet whoever was able to make those suits. They were masterpieces.
Rhodey nodded, seeming to take it in. “You should go to sleep,” Rhodey bluntly stated. It took Tony by surprise. It was certainly not what he was expecting. He was expecting a comment about the vigilantes. Tony made a startled noise. “You are obviously exhausted.” Tony started to protest, but Rhodey interrupted him. “You can’t find these people while being half-asleep!” He had a point there. Tony nodded and started walking towards the elevator. “And don’t you dare try to sneak down to the lab, I will have F.R.I.D.A.Y lock you out!”
Somedays Tony regretted giving Rhodey the power to do that, but he knew it was for his own well-being. That didn’t mean Tony had to like it though.

The sun is now his sworn enemy, Tommy decided. He was actually getting a good night’s sleep, and then the sun had to poke out. Tommy really did not want to get up. School could wait.
“Tommy! Get your ass out of bed!” Or maybe not. The scent of pancakes filtered through the door. That was definitely worth getting out of bed for. When he went to move to get out of bed, he groaned in pain. His back was incredibly sore from throwing himself into a flower pot full of rocks. Maybe he shouldn’t have done that. Too late now.
After getting dressed so he didn’t look like a total mess, Tommy went downstairs. Normally he would’ve jumped down the last few steps, but the less he moved the happier he would be.
When he reached the dining room, he collapsed on a chair. “Woah, Tommy you good?” Techno asked. Tommy sighed.
“I’m going to give you some of the best advice you’ll ever hear,” Tommy told him. Techno snorted. “Don’t ever jump into a flower pot filled with rocks,” Tommy could hear his dad laughing from the kitchen. Even Techno was laughing.
“I will definitely keep that in mind, Tommy,” Techno stated jokingly.
“Tommy! Your breakfast is ready!” Tommy got up off the chair. Pancakes are a good reason to suffer through the pain. The pancakes looked delicious, and he totally didn’t grab 4 of them. He was hungry and sore, let him have his pancakes.
Tommy was right. They were absolutely delicious. Footsteps came down the stairs. Wilbur looked absolutely exhausted when he walked in. His yellow sweater was wrinkled and his jeans were on backwards. It was a challenge to not laugh.
“You look dead on the inside, Wil,” Techno was always the bluntest out of them all, but he wasn’t wrong.
“Thanks very much, Techno,” Wil replied and then yawned. Techno raised his eyebrows. “You would look like this too if you saved Tony Stark from getting killed and then promptly had a mental breakdown!” The dining room went silent. Well, except for the snort that came from the kitchen. Wil rolled his eyes when he heard that.
“Oh, I want this story so bad!” Tommy exclaimed. Previous complaints about being sore were completely forgotten. This was much more important. Wil sat down across from Tommy and next to Techno.
“So I was just kind of jumping around, roof to roof, as you do,” Tommy nodded. Which vigilante didn’t on occasion just jump on roofs? “And I saw this incredibly suspicious person. So I went over and surprise, surprise they have a sniper gun aimed at this random person.” Tommy went to interrupt, “I didn’t know he was Tony Stark at the time!” Wil cut him off, “So anyways I was like ‘oh no’ and used my charm speak and the dude just fell off the roof!” At that Tommy just burst out laughing.
“So you killed him?” Tommy managed to get out before he started laughing.
“Tommy!” Wil shouted, “that’s not funny! And I didn’t kill him, he only fell one floor.” Tommy just continued to eat his pancakes. “Yeah and then there was this chase between me and Stark following me in the Iron Man suit, and you know me being awesome I managed to escape so easily,” Yeah, Tommy didn’t believe that for a second.
“Sure, Wilbur. I totally believe that” Wilbur glared at him, but he didn’t argue with him, so in Tommy’s mind, he won the argument that didn’t even happen.
“Eat up, Tommy. You have school in 45 minutes,” Phil poked his head through the door. He froze, he had forgotten about school when Wil had been talking. Tommy went through his mental checklist, he had finished his homework after supper the night before, he was dressed, but he had not made his lunch. He quickly finished his homework and ran to the kitchen.
Sandwiches were a lifesaver. They were easy to make, he didn’t have to warm them up, and he could pack them easily. Why pay money at the cafeteria when you could just make a sandwich in 5 minutes in the morning. Plus, cafeteria food is disgusting he found out in his first week in New York.
After he made his lunch he decided to crash on the couch for 10 minutes. He could easily run to the school. It wasn’t super far. Some days he wishes he had decided to take online courses like Wil and Techno. It's too late now. Whatever.
His friends from Brighton were making plans to meet up. He could pretend he was ok, but it still hurt. He missed them and they’re incredibly weird hangouts. Like staying up till 3 in the morning watching Pixar films on the weekends. Or when they had competitions to see who could eat their ice cream the fastest. Those days were always the best.
He decided to leave for school earlier. He shoved his phone and headphones into his jean pockets and picked up his school bag which was sitting in front of the front door. “I’m heading off to school!” he yelled. He heard a goodbye from the kitchen and he was off.
It was chilly outside. That was what he noticed first. It wasn’t horrible but it perfectly matched his mood. The walk to Midtown High School was not a long one. It was just enough time for him to wake up on a normal day, but Wil’s story had already done that.
Throughout the walk, he just thought about what would happen if the police tried to track him down? What if Spider-Man tried to track him down? Like he had no other reason for being there, did he? He could have a mental breakdown later because he was now at school.
Sadly he was still the loner kid. He had no friends. The weird bully, if you could call him that, seemed to hate him for no reason. Maybe it was because Tommy scored higher than him on a pop quiz on his first day there. Who knows? And it doesn’t really bother him, 4 year olds could come up with better insults.
School was incredibly boring. Well, history was. Sadly it was his first class. At this point, the seat in the corner was basically his. No one fought him for it and everyone knew that he will always sit there. He didn’t have a reason to not sit there since he did not have friends. The loneliness didn’t bother him. Totally doesn’t.
After an hour and a half of pain, he could leave that stuffy classroom. For their history class, they needed a bigger room. That one was so cramped for around 30 students. Thankfully he now has his favourite class, chemistry. Sue him for his favourite class being the one where you get to mix dangerous chemicals.
When he walked into the class he immediately took his spot in the corner next to a window. He had a few minutes to kill before class started so he began to doodle on a page. The doodle then somehow turned into a possible suit design. He ripped the page out and stuffed it in his bag. No one needed to see that.
It wasn’t long before someone sat next to him. This took him by surprise. No one sat next to him. And secondly, he knew the faces of almost everyone in his grade and he did not recognize this person.
“Who are you?” Maybe Techno’s bluntness was rubbing off on him. The boy’s head whipped to look at him. He had the coolest eyes. On one side he had an eye that was a light red colour, and the other eye was a light green. “Woah! You have cool eyes!” Tommy couldn’t help but exclaim.
“Thanks, I guess,” the other boy stuttered. “My name is Ranboo. I’m new here,” That would explain why Tommy had never seen him before. Now that he had a good look at him it should’ve been obvious that he was new. He was pretty sure he would’ve been able to see a giant in the halls. Ranboo was tall.
“Oh, that’s a cool name,” It was strange but it was a cool name. “I’m Tommy.” Ranboo nodded. He brought a notebook and wrote something down. “What you writing there big man?”
“Oh, this?” Ranboo asked. Tommy nodded. “I forget things easily so I write them down.” That made sense. Tommy nodded. Before their conversation could continue the teacher interrupted them and started class.
Tommy started to zone out. Chem is awesome and all, but this teacher is so incredibly boring. He was drawn out of his daze when he felt something poke his shoulder.
“Want to be partners for the project?” Ranboo asked, his head tilted as he looked at Tommy.
Confused, Tommy asked, “What project?”
“The one that the teacher was explaining just a minute ago.”
“Oh! Ya, sure we can be partners.” Tommy shrugged as he looked around the room to see the rest of their classmates getting into partners and gathering supplies for the lab that the teacher had handed out while Tommy was zoned out.
Ranboo got out of his seat, “I’ll go get the chemicals,” he said, “want to get the glass?”
“Yup,” Tommy said as he stood up from his seat and went to get the beaker.
When they were both back at their desk, they started following the directions but didn’t notice that Ranboo had accidentally grabbed one of the wrong chemicals. All of a sudden there was a giant BOOM and then Tommy and Ranboo were covered in soot along with the two groups beside them.
“Tommy! Ranboo! What did you do?” shrieked the teacher. Tommy looked to Ranboo. Ranboo looked to the beaker in his hands, then he looked back to Tommy. He had grabbed the wrong chemical. Tommy thought it through, it was not fair if Ranboo got in trouble on his first day. So before Ranboo could speak up, Tommy took the blame.
“It was my fault!” Ranboo hit his arm, signalling him to stop. Tommy glared at him. “I wasn’t paying attention and I grabbed the wrong chemical. Ranboo had nothing to do with it!” Ranboo raised his eyebrows. Tommy shrugged. His dad wouldn’t be too mad when he found out the story behind why he got in trouble. As long as it was for a good reason Phil was pretty chill.
“Mr. Watson, I am incredibly disappointed in you. Detention after school for an hour for the rest of the week.” That was less of a punishment than Tommy was expecting. The teacher seemed to like him. “You six at the back are dismissed. Go and clean up as best as you can.” The six of them stood up. Ranboo and Tommy headed out first.
As soon as they exited the classroom, Ranboo wheeled around on him. “Why would you stand up for me?” The other four edged around them in confusion. “You don’t even know me. This is my first day here, it would’ve been so easy to throw me under the bus!” Tommy thought about it. He didn’t really have an answer to that.
“I honestly don’t know why. It just didn’t feel like you deserve it. I mean, it’s your first day here and my dad is pretty chill when I get in trouble. As long as I have a good reason.” Ranboo continued to stare at him in shock.
“You really didn’t have to do that-” Rambo froze. Tommy narrowed his eyes. “Tommy. Your name is Tommy right?” Oh right, bad memory.
“Yeah big man,” he said. Maybe Ranboo could be a friend. The loneliness was starting to get to him, although he would never admit that to his family. His family, especially his brothers, would never let him live it down. “Let’s go clean up and get an early lunch,” it was an invitation. Ranboo grinned. He had accepted it and Tommy got his first potential friend in America.
