Chapter 1
Even before getting yanked through a portal and put into Witness Protection, Peter Maximoff was having a weird day. He was woken up by a small child jumping on his bed and screaming. Considering that he lived in the X-Mansion, he would have gone back to sleep if it was just the screaming, but his little sister Lorna kept jumping on his bed.
“Peter, get up!” she said loudly, jumping hard.
“I’m up you little brat. I’m up.” Peter said slowly rising and blinking the sleep out his eyes, “What did I say about waking me up before noon on a Saturday?”
“Not to, unless you're late for something or Mom says to,” Lorna parroted back to Peter, “But, Peter, mom did tell me to come find you.”
“Why would mom tell you to come get me? I didn’t do anything….” Peter blinked, and the sleepiness was replaced by panic as he suddenly realized they weren’t in his house and the yelling was still going on, “Uhhh, Lorna, why are you here?”
“Mom wanted to visit.” Lorna shrugged, “And you always make excuses as to why she shouldn’t, so she thought she would surprise you.”
Peter groaned. The reason he hadn’t wanted his mom around was because his dad, Erik Lehnsher, a.k.a Magneto had been hanging around more after he had kind of repaired his relationship with Charles. Peter had been trying to come up with a way to tell Erik that he was his son, but didn’t see a good way. Though he had had some decent conversations with him when he hadn’t put his foot in his mouth. And by the sound of it, his mom was doing his job for him.
“Okay Lorna, I’m going to go see mom. Hold on tight.” Peter said as he used his super speed to change out of his pajamas and slowed down to grab Lorna, who wrapped her arms around him like a monkey.
Peter ran to where the yelling was coming from. He saw his mom yelling at Erik, who looked shell shocked and Raven, Hank, and the Professor, who were watching the interaction and trying not to laugh.
Peter slowed down and approached the situation just in time to hear Erik stutter, “Magda, you’re right about all of that, but what are you doing here? I don’t think you came here just to yell.”
Peter cringed as he adjusted Lorna on his hip and steeled himself, it was now or never, “Hey mom! What are you doing here?”
Raven and Charles, who already knew about his relationship with Erik, didn’t react with much surprise, but Hank's mouth dropped open and Erik went white as he most likely did mental math in his head with Peter’s age.
His mom rounded on him, embraced him then looked him dead in the eyes, “Peter Django Maximoff, you’re grounded.”
Peter spluttered while Lorna laughed, “I’m twenty-seven! You can’t ground me!”
Magda’s eyes narrowed, “Yes, yes I can. You didn’t tell me your father was here.”
Peter threw up his hands as Erik choked as his suspicions were confirmed, “I would have if you told me you were coming!”
His mom looked over at Erik, registering his shock, then ignored him, turning back to Peter, “And you didn’t tell him you were his son.”
“It’s not that easy!” Peter said following his mom’s example and ignoring Erik’s crisis, “I mean, have you ever had to tell someone something of that magnitude before?”
His mom raised an eyebrow, “Yes, I have. In fact, let me show you how easy it is.” She looked over at Erik, “Erik, I was pregnant. Congratulations, it was a boy.”
At that comment, Raven finally broke and started to howl in laughter. The Professor followed suit, but much more politely by laughing into his fist. Lorna also joined in at the look on Peter’s face. Hank just looked shell shocked.
“Okay, you little traitor. I’m not holding you any more because you're laughing at me.” Peter sniffed while gently dropping Lorna to the ground.
She kept laughing as she scurried off next to Magda. Peter was going to say something when the world turned upside down and a feeling almost like Kurt’s teleportation came over him. Peter blinked several times and he realized he was in a lab with two people, one with a bird in a circle on the front, pointing guns.
Peter sighed, he would talk to them, but after he got rid of their guns. Peter blurred into superspeed and disarmed them before he got back into his previous position with his arms up.
“Uh hi? What in the ever loving fuck just happened?” He asked.
A black man in a trench coat in an eye patch looked up from his hand where his gun had once been, “I think that something I would like to know as well.”
The white woman standing next to him with black hair, eyes widened, “He’s fast.”
The guy with the eyepatch’s lip curled, “Motherfucker.”
Peter nodded, “Yeah, and I don’t like guns in my face. But, how the hell did I get here? Five seconds ago I was with my parents.”
The man sighed, “We think it has something to do with one of these machines that was set on a timer. We have no idea what they were experimenting on but the timer went off and you appeared.”
Peter shuddered, “God I hate evil scientists. By the way, who are you guys? My name’s Peter, Peter Maximoff.”
The woman’s eyes closed as she pinched her nose and inhaled as eyepatch threw back his head and said, “Fuck.”
Peter blinked, “Uh, what?”
The woman hissed at eyepatch, “We don’t have time for this. With Stark disappearing just a few minutes ago—”
Eyepatch waved her hand, cutting her off, “I know. We’ll let the FBI deal with him until we get the situation sorted.”
Peter looked at him, “I’m sorry the FBI? Do you think I’m just going to go with a government agency?”
Eyepatch just shook his head as the woman answered, “I know this is weird, but we just don't have time for this. My name’s Maria Hill and this is Nick Fury. We’re part of an organization that tries to protect the world. We thought something in this lab would be a big crisis, but it was only you. Then something even worse came up after we got here. We need to go see what’s happening and we will explain everything we can after we do what we need to do. ”
“That’s not really an explanation.” Peter said, “What’s stopping me from running off right now?”
Nick Fury stepped forward, “The fact that we are going to have our best scientists going over this stuff and we can get you home. But only if you are with the FBI and let yourself be put into witness protection.”
Peter wanted to argue, he really did, but this guy made a very good argument, “Fine.”
A beeping went off and Maria checked something and cursed, “Rogers just landed in Wakanda, we need to get there. Woo’s here, he’s trustworthy, we can leave him in his hands.”
Fury nodded, and jerked his head at Peter, “Follow us.”
Peter did as he said and soon they were out of the sketchy lab. Outside there was a much more friendly looking Asian man, leaning on what looked like a government van.
“Hey,” The man said.
Fury interrupted, “We’ll have one of our agents in the FBI process the paperwork. We’ll have another agent take you and him to a safehouse, probably the one in New Jersey. We need to go to New York.”
Fury turned around and walked to a plane that looked like the X-Jet. Peter still couldn’t quite grasp what was going on. Thankfully, the FBI guy took over the situation.
“Hi, my name’s Jimmy Woo.” The guys tried to shake a business card into existence through sleight of hand, but fumbled it, “Ah, damn, sorry. I’m working on it.”
Peter laughed, the first sense of levity he’d had that morning, “Don’t worry about it. You almost got it, maybe in a week or two. Are you someone who is finally going to explain what is going on?”
Jimmy shrugged, “I’ll tell you what I know.”
As Peter explained his part of the situation Jimmy told him what he could as they got into another jet that looked like the X-Jet. Jimmy told him that they were near San Francisco, which was hard for Peter to wrap his head around because he was just in Westchester, New York. Jimmy explained everything he could and by the time they were in Westview New Jersey, Peter had the grasp that he was probably in some kind of alternate future, which wasn’t surprising considering how much Logan complained about time travel.
Something weird had happened and made it that X-Men were not widely known and that another group called the Avengers had taken their place. Also, it was 2019, which was extremely weird. Peter didn’t know why the time travel had only affected him, but he guessed that was something the scientists would begin figuring out. He and Jimmy were still talking outside of the safehouse when Peter noticed that the streets were quieter than they had been a few minutes ago. He looked at Jimmy, and his eyes widened as Jimmy dissolved into ash.
Peter went into superspeed mode, but could feel something happening to him. He looked down and saw his arms and legs were slowly, compared to his perception dissolving. Peter had no idea how to stop it. As the ash ate away at him, Peter could only think that he really should’ve stayed in bed. Everything went black.
Five years later, though it only felt like five minutes, he woke up to the town and a world in chaos. That was only the start of the weirdness though. Three weeks after he woke up, a red shield of energy surrounded the entire town.
