A very strange first meeting
"The ones who belived in the flag smashers have been forming rebel organizations to pressurise the government of reforms. But there are terrible affairs, terrorist organizations are being strengthened with the believers of Flag smashers." Torres reported.
Sam had been keeping tabs on different organizations and their movements. As soon as he noticed unfamiliar actions in one of the less reputed organisation, RHAIJ, he had sent for Torres.
"What about RHAIJ?"
"They are rapidly accelerating in Russia. Their confined movements are not easily available but they are up to something. Something big."
"Thank you Torres. I'll contact you soon." With that he hung up.
He exhaled. Being the Captain America was no cup of tea. You had to keep up the legacy left behind. There could never be another Steve Rogers. To fill up his shoes was a task impossible for a regular man, with no injected serum and no blue eyes. Yes, he had seen several backlash thrown upon him and accusations that he had unfairly acquired the legendary mantle. Sam was no fool, he knew the roots of these inculpates. He chose to ignore them. He could never please everyone.
"How's the wingman doing?" A voice echoed.
The allegations weren't the worst part. It was the custody of a World war veteran. Unsurprisingly, Bucky came along with the mantle and the shield. He was part of the Captian America package.
"There are rising tensions in the Eastern Europe."
"Ok, what's the problem then. Take the shield, take your wings and beat up a few goons."
"It's not that simple, metal arm. I have no jurisdiction there." He said, clearly annoyed of the banter.
"You are the Captain America"
"Ya, but not to them. To them, I am just a bird who recently acquired a Frisbee and you are an angry man with a metal arm."
"Sounds fair to me." Bucky commented. He would have kept up the satirical tone had he not seen the disheartened look on Sam.
"What's the matter?"Bucky enquired.
"You know, it feels like I am not capable of doing anything right. Steve was always righteous, he knew everytime what to do and I- I am just not ready."
"Steve did what he think was right. You think he became a world criminal, a fugitive, after doing everything right? Obviously not. You know what to do, just take off the burden."
"You know, you are getting good with speeches."
Bucky beemed with glee and as he was trying to respond, Sam interrupted,"Ok, now don't flatter yourself. We've got a job to do."
"We?" Bucky asked almost immediately.
"Ya, we. Dont assume I am gonna get a whole suspicious organization down by myself, I'll need help."
"You would need more help than that. My time in Russia is not a pleasant one, and frankly not even one that could help. You need a better guide."
"Don't worry about that, Sam smiled,"I know just the one."
Bucky had conversed with Sam on how taking him to the mission would not be a good idea but Sam wouldn't listen to any objections. After a while, Bucky had stopped trying to convince a determined Sam. Once you get the mantle, the stubbornness becomes extreme.
Moreover, they got a report that a huge sum of money had been exchanged with the account of RHAIJ, so they had to take actions quickly.
"Where are we going?" Bucky asked as they walked around lanes in Brooklyn.
"She is here as of now. A new recruit potential." Sam answered.
Bucky was not sure they could trust a 'claim' that she was Natasha's sister. But they had been informed by Hawkeye and he trusted him.
They stopped by an apartment on the second floor of the building. As a habit, Bucky checked the near exit points and wandered his eyes to look for traps.
Sam however was not cautious. On the other hand he was beeming with excitement. His time on the run with Ramanoff had made him close with her. He missed her terribly and for the first time after the blip he was hopeful of meeting a figure similar to her. Maybe, he could feel the familial bond and finally find the part of his body that vanished with her.
They found the door unlocked and started ahead without knocking. Bucky was about to warn him, but it was too late as Sam immediately fell into a booby trap and got hanged upside down with a rope around his legs.
Bucky could've helped and he should've helped but he was busy laughing at Sam's condition. His laugh was interrupted by a swift moment at his back. A knife blow aimed at his chest was easily deflected as he caught the hands of the attacker. The girl had a black face mask revealing only her eyes. The black widow costume reminded him that he was in for a good fight. The widow now wrapped her legs around his face and before he could react, threw him down at the ground. She revealed another knife from a pocket in her costume and tried to strike it in the neck but stopped with the knife in mid-air. He could feel her heavy breathing.
Bucky knew why she stopped. He swallowed hard as she swiftly moved away and instead of killing him, trapped him through the chest using one of her traps. His pheromoneal lock still restricted every widow to commit violence against him.
The thought of it haunted him. As a form of respect, he didn't break out of the metal barriers crushing his chest even though one strike with the metal hand could've done it.
The widow placed herself at the nearby desk and removed the mask. She had blonde hair, a striking contrast with Ramanoff's red. Her features too were different. No way could she be Natasha's sister, he thought.
"So, why are you two douchebags wandering about in my house?"
Then again, looks can be deceiving but she did have the same sarcastic and witty tone of talking and the same horrifying glare that makes you re-think all your lives decisions. Even though Natasha's was way too horrifying and this one was still trying.
"We are here just to ask for help. We don't mean any harm. I believe sensible talking can be the solution." Sam responded while still hanging down.
"I dont want to help. I free you and you leave me alone. Ok?"
"Hawkeye had a different opinion on you." Sam said.
"That bastard is just lucky I spared his life. I have nothing to do with you or any of your other ungrateful bunch of morons." She exclaimed with hatred replacing sarcasm.
"You are talking to the Captain America." Bucky tried to defend Sam from the humiliation he had been receiving.
"And I am Russian. So, technically I should be on your throat but I know better not to offend a whole nation by killing their charismatic hero. So, you leave peacefully or-"
"We can strike a bargain if you like, Yetesha." Sam responded. He didn't remember her name but it was something along the same lines.
Yelena, considered the offer for a while and brought her knife close to Sam. Instead of hurting him as Bucky feared she cutted the rope, with Sam falling down to the ground with a thud. Bucky suppressed a laugh. "It's Yelena"
"What bargain are you offering?"
"Whatever you like." Sam responded.
"There have been movement of illegal money, if we are to stop it-" Bucky commented
"Then I get some part of the money we are stealing."Yelena completed. Sam quickly furrowed his brows as to reprimand the widow for calling their mission stealing. "We are not stealing" he exclaimed
"Deal, just help us and you'll get a part" Bucky said
"We will return the money, we are not thieves."
Yelena gave him a look of disgust and conveniently ignored him, focusing on the Winter Soldier.
"I want 40% of the money."
"I can only afford 20." Bucky replied ignoring Sam's stern glare.
"Deal." Yelena said almost immediately.
Bucky removed the metal barriers with his metal arm and moved forward to shake her hand. Yelena took the hand and shook it gently. Both had their eyes reflecting mischief as Sam let out an exasperated sigh in the back.
"But that won't be enough. I want something else too."
"What now? Want my property too?" Sam commented trying to be sarcastic.
"No that's for later." She responded back. "For now, I want just the money and- I want her belongings to be returned to me. To the family which truly cared about her."
Sam felt a pang in the chest. Natasha was a dear friend. He had grieved her, cried for her and yet her sister didn't consider him worthy of keeping her souvenirs. But he understood the rage. So, he nodded and promised her that even though most of her stuff was destroyed in the avengers compound, some had been kept at different places which would be returned to her when the mission completes.
"Oh, and I want to throw the shield." She said immediately.
Both Sam and Bucky were taken aback by this. "NO!" Bucky exclaimed.
"Then I want a metal arm."
"You already have both hands." Sam advised
"You both have something cool. If I am to be part of the team, I want a cool thing too."
"We'll see what we can arrange." Bucky commented.
As Sam walked past her, he formed a slight smile. Her innocence was reflecting. She couldn't fill the gaps her sister had left in him. No, no one can. But even though he didn't experience the warmth he had a feeling he would eventually find a good friend in her. He was ready of forming a new team Cap.
