Rita's favourite quill was a gift from Bellatrix for her thirteenth birthday.
It was the first time Bellatrix had displayed any kind of affection for her, and Rita treasured it more than anything else. She only used it for investigating and interviewing.
Every year, in lieu of a gift, Bellatrix would add another charm to the quill to make it better for journalism. It was Rita's favourite present and she anticipated it greatly, but Bellatrix insisted on giving it to her at midnight on her birthday, when their other dormmate was asleep, likely because she didn't want to be seen as sentimental or weak. Rita would spend the whole day pestering Bellatrix about the newest addition to her quill, but Bellatrix never gave anything away before it was time.
When she became an Animagus, Rita found out that she was a Green June Beetle, and her wings matched the emerald green quill perfectly.
