Before I Forget
Gun fire surrounded the two of them as they tried to leave the enemy base together. He set fire in the direction of a few of them firing at them as Bucky shot at the men trying to rush them. (Y/N) slid under one of the trucks, using it as a shield as he sent his own gun fire towards their enemy. He watched as Bucky snapped someone's neck and used them as a shield as he made his way to where (Y/N) was. He panted slightly as he threw the body to the side and started pulling out another gun as (Y/N) provided cover for him. “We both might not make it out of this one, Kapitän. You understand that, yes?” He gave him a side glance before putting a bullet in someone's head. “Don't speak such foolishness. We haven't failed yet and we won't start now. Now be quiet and get back to surviving, Soldat. That is an order.” Bucky looked at him for a moment before nodding slightly. With a small nod, they both rushed from their spot and started taking out as many men as they were able to. (Y/N) caught a man by his throat and started to burn him, drinking in his screams as he used him as a shield while firing at the man's team. Soon they were all spread out on the ground, bleeding and burnt. (Y/N) huffed as he surveyed the underground room before gesturing to one of the two exits. “Come on. Their reinforcements will be here shortly. We need to leave.” (Y/N) said before he started for their way out. Bucky followed behind him wordlessly after plucking a gun or two off its previous owner. As they went through the halls, ducking where they could and killing where they had to, they made it to the room where they initially needed to be. (Y/N) held up his hand signaling for him to wait. Bucky gave (Y/N) a hesitant look before nodding and guarding the door. (Y/N) looked around for a moment before he found someone in a cage, chained up with several different IVs in their arms, in the back of the room. He paused for a moment and tilted his head slightly. He slowly approached the cage and looked the girl over. The moment he was close enough to touch the bars, her head snapped up and met his eyes. He nearly stepped backwards and away from her when he saw the empty and intense gaze she held. “Are you here to kill me?” She spoke in a rough voice, German seeming to be her native tongue. He thought for a moment, thinking back to his original mission. He sighed softly through his mask and shook his head. “No. you're coming with us.” His response seemed to surprise the both of them, though (Y/N) did a better job at hiding his shock. He shot the lock and started to undo her IVs when Bucky joined them. “They’re coming this way, we need to leave before we get into.. another.. shoot out.” His voice died out as he watched (Y/N) carefully take the needles out of her skin, ignoring the small hiss of pain that left her. “She’s leaving with us. We can't leave her like this in the hands of the enemy.” (Y/N) said before he snapped the chains with his hands, worrying about getting the cuffs off afterwards. Bucky shook his head and grabbed (Y/N) by his bicep, pulling him up into a standing position. (Y/N) met his questioning gaze with a small head tilt, Bucky searching for an answer he wouldn't get. He sighed deeply and gave him a halfhearted glare. He let him go and (Y/N) shrugged off his thick jacket, putting it around the girl who mumbled a soft thank you. (Y/N)’s attention snapped to the doorway as Bucky aimed his gun at it, crouching down to hopefully avoid being seen. (Y/N) held his breath and did the same while gently guiding the girl to stay behind them. They watched with bated breath as two armed men stopped by the entrance of the room briefly before running down the hall, presumably to the stairwell the two had just came from minutes ago. The girl let out a sigh of relief before (Y/N) turned to her, his expression unsure. “I’m going to need to carry you out of here if we want to leave now.” The girl looked between the two, Bucky still facing the door with his gun pointing at the entrance, and (Y/N)'s unsure gaze as he held his hands out slightly, as if he was as confused as she was about the whole ordeal. She nodded slightly and decided to trust them to get her out of the hell she was subjected to. (Y/N) held her in his arms as they made their way out of the facility, Bucky covering them. When they made it outside, she gasped softly at the amount of bodies they left behind before making their way in. She turned her head into his chest as they quickly made their way into the cover of the woods. Once they were far enough away, he set her down on a log and allowed her to compose herself. “Where are you thinking?” Bucky asked him softly as he surveyed the area. “We can't be seen by the handlers or they kill us all.. Or worse they’ll..” His argument died at the thought of them being put in the chair again. (Y/N) froze at Bucky’s slowly rising panic.
Suddenly he saw someone who resembled Bucky but younger, standing in a room with his hands on a counter, holding himself up as he tried to steady his breathing. He approached him, placing a gentle hand on his back. He couldn't hear the words that were spoken but he knew they were in a soft tone. He saw a few tears stain his cheeks as he stood up, moving away from his touch. He looked around the room before shaking his head, speaking while gesturing around them, voice slightly raising. Again he couldn't hear what was said, it was like his head was under water as the scene started to blur out but he could hear the same panicked tone. He watched as his body moved on its own, gently placing a hand on his chest that Bucky grabbed like a lifeline. They started talking in softer voices as the panic died in Bucky’s voice. He saw himself move closer to Bucky before the scene completely blurred out and left.
He shook his head slightly, trying to ignore his own panicked thoughts ‘Where did that come from? Who was that? Was that Soldat?’ He looked over to him and slowly approached him. Bucky looked up to him, shaken free from his own thoughts, as (Y/N) placed a hesitant but gentle hand on his chest but closer to his shoulder this time. “Soldat, I promise that the handlers won't see us. We’ll get a vehicle, go out of town and find a cabin or safe house to hold up in till she’s healed. Safe.” She looked over to them, not understanding the Russian that flowed easily between the two but understanding that something was wrong. Bucky held onto his forearm for a moment, squeezing gently before moving his hand away from him. (Y/N) looked at him for a moment before evading his eyes and looking back over to her. “Can you walk?” He asked her in a soft tone, one she didn't expect could come from him. She nodded slightly before standing up. (Y/N) looked ahead and nodded in the direction he's decided on going. “Good. Start walking then. We might be able to find a place by morning, nightfall if we're lucky but we have to start moving.” He said before he started making his way down the slightly worn path, clear that it's not used nearly often enough for a clear and present path to be seen. When they got to an abandoned cabin, the boys checked the place out before deaming it safe enough for the night. (Y/N) barricaded the doors while Bucky did the windows and they all camped out in the small living room. “Get some rest. You’ll need the energy to travel tomorrow.” (Y/N) said before putting some wood in the fireplace while the girl nodded and laid down on the couch that Bucky prepared for her. “Is there anything I can call you two?” (Y/N) tilted his head as he took a seat across from Bucky. “Kapitän and Soldat. You may call us that.” (Y/N) said before taking out his knife to clean it. Bucky nodded and then closed his eyes, composing himself while the girl mulled things over.
A while after the girl had fallen asleep, (Y/N) turned his attention to Bucky who was resting by the fire. He looked him over for a moment before moving a bit closer to him. The “memory” from earlier replayed in his head as he fidgeted with his knife that he cleaned for the twelfth time that night. Bucky cracked one eye open and patted the space next to him, allowing (Y/N) to sit next to him. He scooted over to him and let out a relieved sigh. Bucky got comfy again while (Y/N) put a blanket over the two of them and rested a hand on Bucky’s metal one before he allowed himself to get a bit of rest too, but still staying conscious enough to listen for threats and intruders. Bucky slept peacefully through the night for the first time since they were taken into Hydra. Not that either of them knew that but they sure felt the calming energy that came off of the other and they savored that moment, holding onto it like a lifeline.
