Sunita
"So then, I was like Eww! And he..."
Sunita was walking laps around the school alongside April and some other girl, who was busy telling her stories about everyone in their class. Sunita liked April already, she was super nice and helped her find her classes. She made it easy to be the new girl, and finally get a normal school experience.
Back at home in the hidden city, school was an absolute nightmare. Physical education was a joke. All the kids with mystics always cheated, and math class was a disaster whenever the phoenix yokai who was their teacher got angry. And that was just first period.
So all in all, you just couldn't get a drama-free day. A normal, Human school was going to be a walk in the park, and a chance to actually learn something.
The other girl who's name she didn't catch, was one of those obviously fake girls, but atleast she filled Sunita in on everything about the school. The downsides were April acted more guarded around her. Atleast people like that will loose interest in Sunita in a few days, and leave them alone.
As the girls walked down behind the school, ignoring the other girls chatter, April told Sunita nobody came here much, and that we can come here during lunch break to find one another. The other girl continued her rambling and Sunita sort of zoned out, admiring the basic and plain look of this school. It was so cool! The rotting benched along the in-your-face yellow wall. What's not to love?
Something stood out on those benches. A lilac haired girl was sitting, writing something down in a notebook? Sketchbook? Sunita wasn't sure what it was. But what was this girl doing alone?
"So obviously, I sucked punched the dude and-" The blonde beside them was still going on about her ex-boyfriend from middle school.
"Hey April?" Sunita whispered
"Yea?"
"Who's that?" Sunita pointed at the lilac haired girl.
Just as April opened her mouth to speak, the other girl took over and said,
"Oh her! She's a bitch. Won't speak to anyone except her little nerdy tech club. She pretends not to remember our names! She's horrible!"
Sunita shot her a questioning look that the girl didn't catch but April laughed at. But honestly, Sunita couldn't blame the lilac haired girl for ignoring the girl talking bad about her now.
The same girl continued her previous story, despite April's groan, and the girls walked on, but Sunita kept staring at the tech club member sitting on the bench. Even from afar Sunita could admire her full lips with cyan lipstick on them, and perfect cats-eye eyeliner.
Over the next few days, Sunita's eyes always found her in the crowd. She noticed a few things, like how she bickered with the shorter guy in her group. How all three of them met up at the benches, and all wore the same jacket. How she never ate anything, just scribbled in that sketchbook of hers.
When Sunita asked around if the girl brought lunch, she got a few questioning looks, a few laughs, but most people didint know or care, but did confirm they never seen her eat anything. This concerned Sunita. She felt protective over this stranger she didint know.
So, the next day, while waiting for April, she walked up to her and decided to ask her upfront.
"Why don't you bring any lunch to school?"
"Huh?"
"I said, why don't you bring any lunch to school?"
Sunita smiled down at the girl, who just stared at her. Then she looked around, trying to check If she was talking to anyone else. It was so adorable and cliché Sunita could laugh, this girl was making her very giddy.
Obviously embarrassed, the girls ears went red but she ignored them and shrugged,
"No time."
Sunita's brows furrowed. No time to make lunch? Does she even eat breakfast? Oh saints! Sunita hoped she ate breakfast. It's the most important meal of the day! Suddenly, Sunita got an idea.
"Is there anything you like to eat?"
"No." The girl sounded annoyed.
"Come on! Choose one thing. There has to be one thing."
"A blueberry muffin. There, Happy?"
Sunita beamed.
"Yes."
They kept staring at eachother. Sunita was admiring her face, and her little mole. This girl was gorgeous! Sunita decided she was going to bake her the best blueberry muffins ever. Every day if she had to. She was going to befriend this girl. Oh jeez, they have just been looking at eachother for a while now. Sunita really needs to stop getting lost in her throughts. She hummed and asked the girl,
"What's your name?"
She needed to stop referring to her as "the girl" anyway.
"Kendra." Kendra looked down, and Sunita did a little fist bump in her mind. She got her name! Kendra! She loved the name. She felt it fit the girl Infront of her. "That's a pretty name" Sunita tiled her head to the side, a strand of hair falling on her face. She blew it away then tucked it back behind her ear. Kendra was still staring at whatever it is she was working on, probably waiting for Sunita to leave. Sunita should probably introduce herself too, considering the fact she just disrupted her sketching? Note taking? Sunita wasn't sure once again.
"I'm Sunita. Would you mind if I-" Sunita was going to ask to sit down beside her when April Started calling her over.
"Sunita! C'mere!" April was waving at her frantically, with one hand to her mouth as if to boost the sound.
"That's my cue to leave, I'll see you around!" Sunita shot Kendra an apologetic smile and walked away to meet April.
"We're you talking with Kendra just now?" April asked.
"Yeah! Kendra seems nice. Not at all like that other girl told me on my first day."
"Kendra and nice in the same sentence? Are we talking about the same person?"
"What do you mean?"
"Kendra is the meanest girl in the school, who will ignore everyone unless she's bullying them or being plain rude and boosting her own ego. She reminds me of one of my brothers, acctually, but he is actually a good person. She must really like you if you acctually spoke, and she didn't just tell you to fuck off."
"Oh." Sunita felt incredibly happy, and special somehow. Wow. Kendra was nice to her, and she hates everyone else.
Sunita stayed on that high the rest of the day.
--
Sunita walked back behind the school with a green lunchbox in her arms, the two blueberry muffins sliding around.
The moment she walked up to Kendra, she heard her mutter,
"You again,"
But very quietly, as if only speaking to herself. Then louder she said,
"What do you want from me? Just leave me alone."
Right. So meaner than yesterday. But Sunita won't give up now. She was going to befriend this girl.
"No can do," Sunita sat down, placing the lunchbox on the table.
"I brought you something"
Kendra just stared at her, curiously and confused.
"Why?" She spluttered.
Sunita thought it was pretty obvious.
"You said you don't have time to make lunch. I figured your probably hungry." Sunita opened the box, to show Kendra the two blueberry muffins inside. When Kendra didint move, Sunita prompted her.
"Go on, take one!"
"What did you put in them?"
"What?" Now that confused Sunita. Why would she put anything in the muffins? Did anyone do that to Kendra before? That thought hurt Sunita. Kendra just continued,
"Why are you doing this? Do you want something from me? Trying to get into my good side? It's not working. You can just run off to space bun girl again and leave me alone. I'm sure she'd appreciate this more than I do."
Kendra sounded angry. Does she think Sunita wants something from her? Does she think Sunita wants to get to her good side and use her somehow? That's like, everything Sunita is against. The fact somebody doesn't know that is funny to her. She burst out laughing.
"Did nobody ever show you a scrap of kindness? Look," Sunita grabbed one of the muffins and took a bite, to show she didint put anything in them.
"See? Nothing in them. You can take one, no strings attached. And if you like them, I can keep bringing you some. If you don't, I'll leave you alone. Deal?"
Please like them so I can keep meeting her. Please please please please...
"Hmph." Kendra pouted, and the image sort of reminded Sunita of a child throwing a tantrum. Still Kendra reached for one of the muffins and took a cautious bite.
Her eyes widened and she practically swallowed the whole thing in one go. Sunita was over the moon.
"Woah.Thanks!"
Kendra acctually smiled at her, and Sunita thought she might actually explode. That was the most perfect smile she'd ever seen.
"Want another one?"
Kendra looked like she was about to accept, but then shook her head no.
Hopefully, she liked them enough to let Sunita keep meeting with her.
"Sure."
At that moment, Sunita might as well have exploded. This was the happiest she felt in weeks, and she was a generally happy person.
They were going to be THE best friends EVER.
Or, maybe more.
