Chapter 15

Sam called Peggy to inform her of her husband's abduction. Rae was still shocked and slightly panicked, but she had calmed down enough to properly explain to her mother what happened when Peggy arrived shortly after.

Peggy ran her hands over her face. She had tears in her eyes and looked exhausted. “I can't take that now,” she said and looked at Sam with fear. “Sam, I'm not having a good time right now, I can't take this.”

Sam said, “I know, but we can't change it, Peggy.” He watched Rae who looked at her mother with a weird look on her face. He just couldn't say what was so weird about the look she gave Peggy. “We should've called the police when Rae first told me.”

Sam called the police and told them what happened. They wanted to know if Sam had been there too, so he told them that Rae had been the one to see her father get kidnapped.

The officer wanted to talk to the girl, but Rae had heard it and shook her head. She was still crying and couldn't form words without breaking down.

It had been her who had seen it, after all.

It took a lot to convince Rae to go to the police with her mother and Sam, but she had to tell the police what she knew.

After she finished her report, Sam drove her and Peggy home.

“I can't believe this is really happening.” Peggy said absentmindedly. She stared out of the window and was facing away from Sam so he couldn't see her expression.

“Rae, you said it was Rumlow. That man has always been so weird, I never liked him. I told Steve so. Of course the idiot didn't listen,” she growled angrily.

Rae, who was sitting in the backseat behind Sam looked up. “Mum.” she said with a surprising force behind the single word. “Don't talk like that about him. It's not his fault.”

Peggy turned towards her a little, but due to the fact that she was sitting in the passenger's seat, Rae still couldn't see her face. “How do you know? He should've known it was Rumlow all along. That man screamed 'dangerous criminal'. Not that I knew Rumlow well, but everyone could see that he was not a good person.”

Rae frowned. “Seriously? Mum, why the hell are you blaming dad for this now?” Her voice turned colder with every word. Anger flared in her eyes. “You just want someone to blame for all of this! And with 'all of this' I mean your goddamn marriage as well.”

“Rae!” Peggy glared at her over her shoulder. “You have no idea what this feels like to me.”

“I think I do.” Rae crossed her arms above her chest. “You act like you don't even want to find dad. The police is going after him right now and all you talk about is how it was his fault that he got kidnapped, like everyone could see the 'signs'. Don't pretend that you knew. You met Rumlow like what, four times? And you're saying you knew?”
