Chapter 8

December 6, 2018

He followed the target through the city. The target had been acting weird for the past few weeks. He didn't know how to feel when he realized why the man was acting this way.

He pushed away the thought and called his partner to tell him that the target had left his house.

They were watching when it happened.

They were standing between the people who looked over to the burning car, the people who screamed and yelled and cried.

The people who said that they should call the police and an ambulance.

He stood between a girl who covered her mouth with her hand and a middle aged man with a shocked expression on his face.

He watched the flames climb towards the sky, the smoke disappearing into the air.

He watched the blood as it slowly flowed across the ground, coming from the boy's body.

The body that was now put inside a black bag.

He watched the target stare and cry and he watched the young woman sooth him, leaning into him and hugging him tightly.

He looked to his partner whose face was scrunched up in remorse.

His partner looked at him with a blank look in his eyes and said “This is the last act before we finally get to him.”

He doesn't know what to say to that so he just turns away and slowly walks away from the wreckage and the crying people.

The target was walking through the city with a distant look on his face.

The frown was now constant on his face.

The target had bags under his eyes, he always looked like he never got enough sleep or like he had cried just before he left the house.

He looked at the red notebook in his hands. It was filled with information about the target.

He opened the book and noted it down.

He hoped they could stop watching the target soon and just take him.

They had been watching him for a few months now and their handlers still refused to let them kidnap the target right away.

What was so special about the guy that they needed to plan this mission out for months?

They were taking notes on the man's behavior, his daily routine, his surroundings, his weaknesses and everything else that might be important.

The target was often with his family or people that seemed to be his friends, so they couldn't attack then.

The target had three children, the fourth one having been eliminated.

They took pictures of the kids and the wife and the friends.

They sent them to their handlers.

They could use them to blackmail the target.

He felt disgusting afterwards.

Peggy watched Steve as he picked up the toddler that had been playing with the toys in the floor.

She watched her husband's expression as he let his youngest daughter climb up on his shoulders.

The sweet smile lit up his face, the worry completely washed away.

He wasn't happy a lot these days.

He had just found out that his best friend, Bucky Barnes, had died. He had been killed and Steve was still both sad and furious.

He wanted to know who did this to the man he'd known his entire life, the man he'd trusted and loved so much, the man he'd shared every secret with.
