Prologue

Peter knows a lot of things that the adults in his life think he doesn't know. Some things were harmless, like how he knew that the cookies were hidden on the shelf above the sink, but others were not so harmless, like how he knew that his parents liked his older brother, Harley, more than him, no matter how much they denied it. But it was fine. He could take care of himself. He had to teach himself how to cook when he was five, so he wouldn't starve to death. His mom and dad were very important, so they had a lot of work, so they couldn't come to his dance recitals, but aunt Natasha came, so it was fine. They always came to Harley's competitions, canceling their meetings for him even if they were really important. When Dad drank his spicy juice, he called Peter mean names and hit him, but it was his fault; he was a bad boy, so it was fine. He felt like an outsider. He saw how much Harley was loved and doted on by both of their parents. Why couldn't that be him? It doesn't matter because Peter was independent; he shouldn't have to be. He was only eight. Aunt Natasha always told him he was being treated wrong and that he was just as good as, if not better than, Harley, then why did Harley get all the attention from their parents? Why was it always Harley this and Harley that? But Peter still tried his hardest to get his parents to acknowledge him. It was all in vain. When he did something, like getting an A, he was always lectured for 'trying to out shine Harley' and when he asked for attention, he was told that he was 'being selfish.' Peter was alright being alone. it hurt so much. Peter was fine.
