Chapter 6

Gus: “Amity! We’ve arrived to the last part of the podcast… what did you make out of it so far?”

Amity: “It’s been fun, honestly. It’s nice to chat about the good old days, and look back on how drastically different things were back when we were younger. To think that we’re closer to thirty than twenty, or at least, I am.

It kind off stinks to grow up, because, let’s be honest, being a kid is so much fun… because you can enjoy life and have little responsibilities… or at least, when Belos was gone…

Not that being grown up is bad, it isn’t. We’re still full of life and we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us… if nothing bad happens at least.”

Gus: “You keep saying at least…”

Amity: “Oh, sorry.

What I’m trying to say is…

I kind of miss the good old days… when we went to school every day, we goofed off in class, hung around with each other all the time, helping others in need…

I kind of miss spending time with you guys. It’s not that we don’t see each other any more, but I miss seeing you guys almost every day… because… I love you guys just so much.”

Gus: “Yeah… I miss that too. But hey, at least you get to see Luz every day, right?”

Amity: “Yeah… but that… that’s not really what I meant…. I-”

Gus: “I know.

I miss those days as well. We had so much fun… the period between defeating Belos and Graduating Hexside was the best.

That was because we knew that we were safe, and that nothing could come between us anymore. No evil emperor anymore, no coven system anymore, no fear… of wild magic anymore.

We could just study what we really enjoyed. We’d try out new things!

I remember getting into my first construction class with Matt. He convinced me to join hiss class, since he joined mine. And I was so excited! Being an illusionist was fun alright, but I… knew those things. There was nothing really… what challenged me anymore.

The only thing I really wanted was to master my big illusion spell, you know, the one I created when that jerk almost gave me an abomination sigil.”

Amity: “Oh yeah…

I remember being excited, too. The only thing I… did every day was creating abominations… and experimenting with them…

And not gonna lie, I… had my ups and downs with abominations.

Before… I changed as a person… I had a lot of stress around being in the Abomination Class. Like is said before… I had to get good grades, because if I didn’t, I’d get punished.

I studied… just because I had to, you know?

But when I stopped caring about performing, thanks to you guys, I began to like abomination magic more and more! Isn’t that… strange?”

Gus: “Well… have you heard about people that made from their hobbies their work?”

Amity: “What about that?”

Gus: “It’s basically losing creativity and interest.

What if I… like… quit my job as a teacher at the University, and start doing this Podcast full time. Do you think I will enjoy this more? Or will I lose interest time by time?”

Amity: “I get what you mean… but I think there was another thing that got my interest up in abominations after I wanted to become a better person… and that thing was… you guys…

As you know… I am someone can be… overprotective…

And since I had so much to lose after I got you guys in my life… I wanted to be able to protect you. I wanted to be able to be there for you whenever you got in trouble!

Like the time Edric, Emira and Eda were in trouble at the knee!

I was such a weak witch back then, compared to when I was a couple months after that. I still had a freaking training wand. I managed to help them, but barely, just because Em had faith in me and… I wanted to impress Luz.

The Boiling Isles can be a dangerous place, you know, especially back in the days.

For the first time in my life, I had people I genuinely cared for… and I wasn’t going to lose that. I started to train more on the fighting aspect, and boy, I love fighting!’

Gus: “Hehe, I know you do! We’ll talk about that in a bit!

But yeah, I think you’re right.

Which classes did you start following after Belos’ defeat?”

Amity: “I started following Bard magic, Healing magic, Plant magic, Illusion magic and still Abomination magic. So… five tracks.

That’s was pretty much, so I dropped the Illusion track after some time.”

Gus: “I didn’t like that.” :(

Amity: “No… I’m sorry.

I felt like five tracks was being too much work, and out of those five, I liked illusions the least. But I did love being in the same class as you, Gus. And of course, Ed and Em.

Oh, and also, you three were masters in it already! So I couldn’t show off to you guys! And you know I like to show off… *Smirks*

Gus: “We weren’t masters!

And we’re still not, or at least, I’m not. And I don’t know if master is the right term. Being a master requires knowing and performing all spells possible, and I still can’t do certain things…

But I did get it, yeah. Five tracks at Hexside was… much.

I did illusions, construction and potions. Graduated in every single one!

Do you thinks Luz could have graduated every single track if she kept going to Hexside?”

Amity: “Definitely! Luz tells me all the time!

She still wishes she could have gone to Hexside with us, but after some discussion… with us, and most of all… her mom, she decided to finish high school in the Human Realm… which was… totally understandable.

Luz couldn’t do glyphs anymore, and she had a functioning portal to the Human Realm, so I’d made sense to go to go back to her own high school.

Kind of bummed me out, but also made me more excited to see her after school.

I definitely couldn’t do every track. That was just impossible. I think no one did when we went, right.”

Gus: “I think… so?

Graduating in nine tracks… man, that must be really hard.

I mean, I like trying out Oracle magic, Bard magic and Beast Keeping magic, but I couldn’t spent all of my time focusing on nine tracks!

It’s really cool you could if you really want, though.”

Amity:”Definitely!”

But I do… remember that… some students that just started going to Hexside, did all nine tracks as like an… introduction. To try out and figure what they liked the best.

And… and, how didn’t we mention this before

Luz went up choosing all classes at University!”

Gus: “Oh yeah…

But don’t forget that the University of Wild Magic is not the same as Hexside. And don’t forget that Luz isn’t like the other students. *Laughing*

You know, since she isn’t able to do magic the way we do”.

Amity: “I know. Just wanted to mention het again! Sorry!”

*Laughing noises*

Gus: I wanted to talk to you about another part of your life, your career as a Bonesborough Brawl fighter. Kind of odd that we didn’t talk about this before, since it’s… kind of a big part of who you are, isn’t it?

Amity: “I guess it is. But not anymore.”

Gus: Girl… You’ve won the competition five times. Five times in a row! And at such a young age!

Where did your passion for the brawl came from? And how did you end up in this competition and how did you get so… uhm… good?”

Amity: “Well, it all started when I was around twelve years old and I found out that my dad had previously won the competition. He showed me a picture of him holding the championship belt and I thought it looked so cool!

He explained what the Bonesborough Brawl was and that you could compete from the age of fourteen. He actually won the competition when he was… sixteen I think, but he quit after joining the Abomination Coven.

And after he joined the Abomination Coven, he stopped fooling around he said. He started working for Blight Industries and basically lost all of his friends by doing so, because he worked all the time.

While he was telling me that story, I could tell that there was some regret… and that he secretly really loved fighting in the Bonesborough Brawl.”

Gus: “So your dad made you excited for the Brawl, after he told you his story. He won the competition when he was young, but he didn’t want you to participate in the first place, right?”

Amity: “No, he got brainwashed by my mom. She always disliked the Brawl very much and put that thought in my dad’s head.”

Gus: “But deep down, he still liked the Brawl, didn’t he?”

Amity: “Yes! It was just a part of his life that my mom wanted to erase from his memory. She wanted him to only focus on his job, which was creating Abomination related machinery. And why did she want that? Because of… you couldn’t guess…”

Gus: “Money…”

Amity: “And… AND…?”

Gus: “S-…”

Amity: “Yes… Yes… almost there…”

Gus: “Status?’

Amity: “Congratulations, you’ve won.”

Gus: “What did I win?”

Amity: “Nothing.”

Gus: “Cool!

*Laughing noises*

Anyways, your dad must have had conflicted feelings when you told him about wanting to participate the first time.”

Amity: “Yeah… when I told him I wanted to participate, he said he wanted me to go to the Emperor’s Coven tryouts.

I told him I didn’t want to, because I really wanted to enter the Brawl, just like he did when he was young.

But he said that he goofed of a lot when he was younger, and that needed to focus on my future…”

Gus: “So you didn’t have your parents’ permission, but you still joined the Brawl the first time, didn’t you?”

Amity: “Yes, I did, thanks to Luz and Ed and Em.

They gave me the courage to enter the Brawl behind my parents’ back. I don’t think I could have done that without them.”

Gus: “They supported you no matter what.”

Amity: “Yes! They gave me the courage to stand up for myself and do what I really wanted to do, which was fight!

The first Brawl went really good, but when I got to the final against the current holder, my dad interrupted me and ordered me to stop.

He got me this… chaperone to follow me around all day, and when it’s alarm went off, he knew I ditched tryouts. He was really mad at me and I at him! And I was kind of mad at Luz, for… other reasons, so I ran off, alone.

But to make a long story short, I made up with my dad that day. After we beat up the former champion holder together, who turned into a horrific creature, I told him how I really felt.

I told him I didn’t want to join the Emperor’s Coven. I told him I was dating Luz. I told him that he didn’t pay attention to me, Ed and Em anymore.”

Gus: “That was really a wake up call for him, wasn’t it?”

Amity: “It really made him think, yeah…

From that moment, he started to be there more often for us. He wanted things to change, especially after the Day of Unity.”

Gus: “I wasn’t there that day, unfortunately. But I was the next years!

It’s incredible that you just won that competition five times in a row without that much effort! What was your secret, the Mighty Mittens?”

Amity: “Well… I always try to be smart with my attacks, something that the opponent doesn’t expect me to do.

Some opponents used to say that they figured me out, but they never did. I just always mixed with my strategy and that would throw them off completely.”

Gus: “Sometimes, it looked so easy from the sideline…

But also, you have unbelievable magical abilities, don’t forget that, Mittens. You’re one of the greatest Abomination witches out there, maybe even the best.

That helps, too.”

Amity: “Thanks, Gus.

But I don’t think it’s about magical abilities. It’s about strategy, and figuring out your opponent. The abilities help, of course, but every opponent has great abilities.

It’s about using them at the right moment. It’s about waiting for the right moment to strike.”

Gus: “And that is why you’ve won it five times.”

Amity: “Yup!” *Chuckles*

Gus: “Will we ever see you again as the Mighty Mittens?”

Amity: “Uhm… maybe? *Smirks*

I don’t know whether or not I make my comeback. I might come back if someone overtakes me as fighter with the most titles…”

Gus: “Mmmhmmm…. Why did you stop in the first place actually?”

Amity: “I got pregnant. That’s it really.”

Gus: “So you would have continued if you hadn’t gotten pregnant?”

Amity: “Yeah, probably.

But five times in a row is a decent record. I also wanted to give the other fighters a change to win once. *Smirks*

No, but I don’t think I’ll return in the next few years. You know, now with the kids and the job. I’m taking it easy the next few years.”

Gus: “Oh well… Amity, we’re almost out of time.

Amity: “Awww :( ”

Gus: “I know…

Gus: “A question I ask to all my guests… is…

What does your future look like?”

Amity: “Hmm, honestly? And I know this is gonna sound way cheesy…

I hope that I get to live and long life, together with all the people that I love…

But yeah, I love the life that I have right now and I don’t see my life going any differently. I hope that this little one will come out in two months nice and healthy…”

Gus: “Yeah… still think it’ll be a girl…”

Amity: “You’re just saying that because we already have two boys.”

Gus: “No. I really think it’ll be a girl.”

Amity: “Alright… we’ll hopefully get to see them in two months…. I can’t wait.”

Gus: “Next pregnancy is on Luz?”

Amity: “W-what?”

Gus: “I’m just kidding. But if you’ll decide to have a fourth child, Luz will be the pregnant one, right?”

Amity: “I don’t know, Gus.

Shouldn’t be looking so far ahead right now, you know, since we haven’t even gotten our third, yet.”

Gus: “Just kidding…”

Amity: “I know….”

Gus: “Amity, we’ve gotten to the end of the Podcast.

Amity: “What? No!”

Gus: “No what? It’s time, Amity.

Amity: Can’t I like… make a comeback next week?

I like this! Talking about our past with you! I don’t get to see you as much anymore! I don’t get to see the five us together as much anymore! :( ”

Gus: “I know…”

Amity: “Can’t we like… go on the podcast with… the five of us? And talk about our adventures together? That’d be so much fun!”

Gus: “I think that would be cool!

Only problem is that I don’t have the equipment… but that shouldn’t be a big problem…

I could just rob a human store to get it.”

Amity: “Gus!”

Gus: “Kidding!

But yeah… a podcast with the five of us would be really cool!

Let me know if you think that’s a great idea as well in the comments down below, listeners!”

Amity: “You better!”

Gus: “Amity! I want to thank you for coming on to the Podcast!”

Amity: “Thank you for having me! I loved it!”

Gus: “That warms my heart.

See you next week with another special guest!”
