Chapter 1
It was impossible for her to not remember James Bucky Barnes. The thick wall of a man that she used to be friends with when they were still the good little lonely children of West View Village. When they grew apart in middle school, her blending perfectly with the crowd and him shining like the golden child he really is, she promised herself to not talk to him ever again. It wasn't even that challenging because he became literally worlds apart when he started hanging out with the “cooler” kids.
If she could see her 12 year old self right now, she’s probably be swooning over the fact that Bucky, her best friend, the only person who eats lunch with her in elementary and not get embarrassed is sitting across from her with people she just met. After everything that happened, eating with Bucky still feels the same.
The mashed potato almost choked her to death when Pietro, the guy with blonde highlights, asked Bucky if you two have met before. She almost blew up your esophagus trying to swallow the potato stuck in her throat when he let out a casual “No”. Pietro shrugged and looked at her in disbelief. “You guys sure? We can feel like there’s some past life connection between the two of you. Like there’s a cloud above the two of you,” he chuckled.
She can feel it too. The looming ambiance in the middle of the busy cafeteria.
Natasha, her roommate, cleared her throat. “Well if they’ve met before they’ll probably be talking to each other right now right? Catch up at least.” She said, throwing a weird look at Pietro.
Wanda, the reason why they are all sitting awkwardly together in this table nodded in agreement. “I know this is very awkward for you guys, but I think we just have to shake some tension to make things a little bit lighter.” said the blonde guy sitting beside Pietro.
“I think we should introduce ourselves.” Natasha added.
She thinks they shouldn't. But before she could even formulate the words in her mind it’s already too late as Wanda, the wonderful woman who invited you into this, is already talking. “Okay, I'll go first. My name is Wanda, I’m taking Culinary Arts because I love to cook obviously, and I’m from Sokovia.” Wanda said. She was greeted with the guy who isn’t Pietro and Bucky that she still didn't know the name of.
“Ok so I’ll go next,” said Nat. “I’m Nat, I take forensic science, and I love America.” she finished. The blonde chunk of a man smiled even wider and she’s very sure that he’s about to get disappointed in what he’s gonna hear next.
Wanda elbowed her as it was her turn to speak, she hates that she chews so fast when she’s anxious that the food that she stuffed in her mouth to avoid her turn was already in her stomach. Nat gave her an encouraging nod. She’s been thinking of drinking water first as her throat suddenly dried up, or just swallow herself if it’s even possible.
“Her name is—”
“My name is—”
They both froze mid sentence. All four pairs of eyes are now staring at them but they never noticed the confusion from Wanda’s eyes, the “i knew it” glow in Pietro’s, and the mischievous glint from Nat’s, as their eyes locked in each other the moment they realized they fucked up.
“C'mon man, let the lady speak for herself.” Pietro teased. It was Bucky who first cut the eye contact. She swallowed the lump that form in her throat. “As I was saying before I got rudely interrupted.” she bagan, Bucky scoffed. “My name is y/n”
The table fell into silence, she didn’t know if she ruined the mood with her unnecessary meanness or she’s just uncomfortable to be in silence with a bunch of strangers. “I know you’ve already told us which college you’re in and where you’re from, but you’ve gotta tell them more.” Nat encouraged. She wished she could tell her “no I don’t want to, I’m never gonna meet these people ever again anyways so it doesn't matter” but Wanda and Pietro were already in unison saying things in the round of “ yeah, she’s right.”
She sighed. “I’m taking Fine Arts and I’m from Brooklyn.” She did’nt even bothered to check their reactions as she just chugged the water in her glass.
“Wait, you’re from brooklyn? I’m from Brooklyn too. How come I’ve never meet before?” The blonde whose name is unknown asked.
“Well, brooklyn is big ang i’m very easy to overlook.” She answered. “What? But you’re quite remarkable, how could you say that to yourself?” He replied. “What’s your name?” tired with all the bullshit for today, she asked. “Uh, Steve.” he answered a bit confused.
“Okay, ‘uh Steve’ can you tell us about yourself now?” she asked impatiently.
Uh Steve smiled at her. “Well, my name is actually Steven but you can call me steve. I’m from brooklyn and I’m taking Biology. It’s really nice meeting all of you, I’m very much looking forward to seeing you all around the campus.” He smiled.
She wonders if that man will ever stop smiling. It’s annoyingly good to see him smile but he looks so kind it’s making her want to throw up.
“Okay man that made me very emotional, are you trying to run for Governor or something? And hey we’re roommates don’t you remember? What the hell are you saying with seeing you around campus? We literally have three classes together.” Pietro rambled making Steve chuckle. Wanda and Nat on the other are whispering something at each other, whatever it was, she doesn't care. She just wants this to be over.
“I feel like the girls are being bored waiting for my turn so I’m gonna introduce myself now.” Pietro said, clearly high in his unnecessarily strong confidence. “The Name is Pietro Maximoff, Engineering student, born and raised in Sokovia, and Wansa’s twin. By the way, I’m hurt tha you didn't told them i’m your twin.” The american accent faded in his last sentence making Wanda laughed. “Well isn’t it obvious?” Wanda replied. “I don’t care, why you didn told them? Are you not proud to be my sister?” he asked with a fein puppy eyes making everyone at the table laugh.
“Well, I’m not considering being a twin as a personality trait.” Wanda answered. Shocked, Pietro replied “You’re being mean to your older brother. I’m gonna tell mom.” which just made them laugh even more.
Nat was wiping a tear that unintentionally fell from her eyes from all the laughing while Wanda scrunched her nose. “So it’s your turn now pal. It’s your turn to tell us about yourself now.” Pietro started.
Bucky cleared his throat and all of a sudden all eyes are on him now. “Is it really necessary? It’s not like we’re gonna meet each other again.” Bucky answered.
“Really pal? After Steve’s heartwarming introduction you’re gonna say that?” Pietro said trying to act hurt.
“Well, it’s just your name and the basic stuff that you’re gonna tell, we’re not gonna ask for your social security number.” Wanda smiled. Nat on the other hand leaned on the table. “Right, believe me, we’re not interested in stealing your identity or something.” Nat engaged.
“I’m not—it’s not—-” Bucky sighed. “James. Biology. Brooklyn.” he said.
“That’s an odd name, but okay. Nice meeting you James Biology Brooklyn.” Nat smirked.
“Do you prefer James or can we call you Biology?” asked pietro.
If Bucky can only disappear, he would. But unfortunately he can’t so he’d have to deal with this idiocracy he engaged himself into. “My name is James, I’m taking biology, and I’m from brooklyn. Are you happy now?” Bucky asked. Pietro just shrugged it off with a grin.
“What are the odds? We literally met each other on the bus, then we’re in the same room and on the same course and now you’re telling me that you’re from Brooklyn?” asked Steve with an astonished look.
The odds of them meeting in a bus on the way there then finding out they were roommates and block mates is literally high but after all, nothing’s impossible. And the fact that y/n thought she could completely getaway from her hometown had now gone to thin air as she was sitting with an over enthusiastic blonde and an old friend from Brooklyn.
