So, What Am I Defending Now?

“I’m not tragic these days, I don’t weep, but I feel alone, bewildered, far from you, far from everything—nothing has any meaning.” —Simone de Beauvoir

Every few weeks, Steve and Peggy went to Strange Miracles for a check-up. Steve because his health was always a concern. Peggy because she likely inherited something. For the first time, Steve and Peggy didn’t have to face it alone.

James had insisted on coming. He sat next to Steve and held Peggy, offering both of them comfort.

Steve was no stranger to hospitals, waiting rooms, or doctors. But he’d never learned how to like it. That sterile smell, the white-washed walls, and the disinterested faces just brought everything back. He remembered being hospitalized. He remembered hearing his ma cry for the first time. He remembered when it was her turn. He remembered hiding his tears from her…

“Peggy Rogers.”

Steve was always worried when it was Peggy’s turn.

James squeezed his hand.

Dr. Strange greeted them as indifferently as he always did. He listened to Peggy’s lungs and tested her reflexes.

Anxiously, Steve watched and worried.

“Has anything changed?” Dr. Strange asked. “She appears to be in better health this time.”

“Really?” Steve asked.

Dr. Strange nodded. He looked at Steve finally, noticing that the Omega also appeared to be in better health. Finally, his gaze was drawn to the quiet Alpha. “Ah, that explains it.”

“What?” Steve asked.

“You’ve got an Alpha,” Dr. Strange said. “Alphas drastically affect the health of Omegas and pups.”

Steve’s own appointment went much the same. He was given a stronger medication, a precaution with the colder weather coming. But overall, he was healthy.

And it had everything to do with James.

“I can’t believe it,” Steve said quietly. “I always expect the worst when it comes to doctors. I-I’ll have what my ma had… Or Pegs will have asthma…”

“You won’t ever have to go to the doctor’s alone,” James promised. He wished he could do more.

Steve smiled softly. “Thank you for taking care of us.”

“You take care of me too,” James whispered.

More than they knew.
