Chapter 13
“Foggy?”
He blinked and lifted his head up, only to realize he’d fallen asleep at the office again. There was a piece of pasta stuck to his cheek and he felt disgusting but he really didn’t care. He had to do something, anything, to get Matt back.
“Have you been here all night?”
Foggy moved his head, blinking blearily at Karen standing in his doorway, a worried expression on her face.
He made a noncommittal sound, wiping the pasta from his face and moving the bowl to the side to grab another file Bruce had sent over. It was just some legal papers of ownership for several buildings under James Benjamin but Steve had said he’d been a person of interest to SHIELD for years regarding HYDRA. Tony had said it was a long shot, but it made Foggy feel useful. Made him feel like he was doing something to help his friend.
“Foggy?” Karen approached the desk quietly, a mug of hot tea in her hands. “Does this have anything to do with Matt’s disappearance?”
At this, his eyes snapped up. It really wasn’t an intelligent sound that came out of his mouth as he stared at his secretary.
She shot him a frown. “I’m not stupid, Foggy. You’re a terrible liar. I’ve been to his apartment and he hasn’t been there in a while. You’ve been a mess all week. You’re getting hourly calls from a private number, which, by the way, belongs to Tony freaking Stark! You owe me an explanation of what is going on. Is Matt in danger? Because if he is, why haven’t you reported him missing? And what has Tony Stark to do with this?”
Foggy groaned and lowered his head. She was right. He’d been so caught up in Matt’s kidnapping that he’d forgotten about Karen. He hadn’t given her an explanation at all. He should have known she’d figure out something was wrong.
“Sit down, please.” His voice was hoarse and he cleared his throat, blinking away the tears that threatened to fall down.
“Foggy?” Karen eyed him worriedly, sitting down in the chair reserved for clients. She placed the mug in front of him. Steam rose up from the dark liquid and he stared at it for a moment, allowing its heat to warm him. “Is Matt okay?”
He met her eye, allowing the tears to slip free as he shook his head. “No, he’s not,” he croaked out, his fingers curling around the mug.
He’d gotten this mug for Matt in college, he thought. It was an ugly green colour with a picture of an avocado on it. Foggy had gotten the words “avocados at law” engraved on it. The colours had faded over the years, from Matt rubbing his fingers over it. The paint had raised the picture, Matt had once explained to him.
“Matt’s been kidnapped.” Foggy clenched his jaw to keep himself from sobbing, or puking. Or both. He wasn’t sure.
Karen gasped, her hand reaching up to cover her mouth. “Foggy! Why didn’t you tell me? By who?”
“By HYDRA. That’s why Stark keeps calling me. They’re looking for him.”
“The Avengers? The Avengers are looking for Matt?”
Foggy nodded, dreading what he had to do next. Matt was going to hate him if he co- no, when he comes back.
“Please let me explain before you interrupt okay? Just know that Matt has been wanting to tell you.”
“Tell me what?” Karen’s sharp gaze pierced into his and Foggy swallowed.
“Matt’s Daredevil,” he breathed out, continuing before she could say anything. “He was on a mission with the Avengers when he got ambushed and taken by HYDRA. I’ve been working with them to find him.”
“Huh,” she breathed out, slumping back in her seat. “It makes so much sense.”
“What?”
“The bruises, the showing up late to work, knowing things about cases he shouldn’t have. I should have seen it.” She shook her head in disbelief. Then she pursed her lips. “What do we know so far?”
Foggy blinked. “What just happened?”
She narrowed her eyes. “I’ll be mad about you two lying to me when we get Matt back. Now fill me in so I can help you pour through these files faster.”
Foggy stared at her for a second. “You amaze me, Ms Page.”
Karen rolled her eyes but took the file he handed her with a small smile.

Two hours into their save-Matt-from-his-own-stupidity-taskforce (as Karen had so helpfully dubbed them), Foggy received another call from Tony.
“We found something,” the billionaire said as soon as Foggy picked up. “How fast can you get over here?”
Foggy glanced at Karen, who raised her eyebrow. “We’re on our way.” He answered, not waiting for Tony to reply.
A distant “Wait, who’s we?” could be heard as Foggy ended the call.
“They found something?” Karen guessed, already retrieving both their coats. She tossed Foggy's coat at him before marching straight to the door.
"Yeah," Foggy breathed out, rushing out after her. New hope bloomed in his chest as she managed to catch a cab awfully quick. They were going to find him.
