Chapter 2

“It just had to be in here didn’t it.” The masked mercenary sighed, looking up at the Avengers Tower.

“Let’s get this bread I guess.” They muttered to no one around.

They would have taken a helicopter up to the top but since they can’t, through the front entrance it’ll be.

“Maybe if you persuade them to let you join, or ask them for help with a made up tale, this would go smoothly.” A voice echoed in their head.

They halted, contemplating if that’s way better than just marching in and storming the place. “I’ll take that risk, maybe I can snatch it easily when I’m right under their nose.”

They waltzed in through the main entrance, stopping at the desk in front.

“May I help you?”

“No, but I think Stark can.” They tried to sound in need of help.

“Can we speak?” They asked.

“I’ll let Jarvis know and he’ll take you up.”

They nodded. But was startled when hearing Jarvis’ voice guiding them up to the room.

“Sir, someone is here to speak with you, I believe they are in need of some assistance.” Jarvis informed Tony in the lab.

“I’ll be there in a minute.” He replied.

“So this is the tower on the inside.” They whistled. “I gotta say, it’s better than your mansion.” They said aloud.

Peter was the first one to acknowledge them. He was crawling on the walls, definitely showing off a bit. But he hung from the ceiling to offer a hand to them. “Hi, Mr Stark won’t be long. He just gets carried away in his lab.”

The mercenary raised an eyebrow at him but shook his hand awkwardly. “Do you always crawl on the ceiling?”

“Yes.” Peter nodded. “Do you always wear that unusually long cape?”

“No.” They said plainly.

“What’s with the all white? I’m not judging or anything.” He jumped down from the ceiling to land in front of them.

“Pretty sure you are.”

“I mean, all white? Can’t hide easily from bad people when you need to.” Peter rubbed the back of his head.

“That’s the point. They see us, so either they run and we catch them. Or they freeze on the spot.” They shrugged.

“I...” Peter paused. Unsure of how to respond to that.

“How old are you anyway? You an Avenger?” They asked.

“I’m an Avenger. I’m 24, been doing this for a while. How old are you? Since you asked me.”

“No, we’re not telling him that.” They waved to the side. “He’s the spider guy, remember. Saw him swinging around last time we were in New York.” They stepped off to the side, looking towards the couch.

“Um...you alright?” Peter asked.

“What?” They replied, then looked back at the couch. “Oh. No of course not. Where’s Stark anyway?”

“Do you want a drink?” Peter crawled to the kitchen.

“Sure.” They followed Peter to the counter, picking up a drink Peter just poured. “You think Stark’ll let me stay here for a while? I’ve got a task that I could use a bit of help with upgrading my equipment.”

“What do you do?” Peter questioned.

“Nah, I don’t exactly have an answer for that. I’m no hero like you, more the opposite.” They grinned at him after lifting the mask up to take a sip.

“Yeah...so what’s your name?”

“Name?” They scoffed.

“You gotta have a name.” Peter furrowed his brows together.

Tony had overheard the last of the conversation when entering the room.

“What’s this about names?” He called over. “Oh...” He looked up to where they were. “Hey, mind if we chat over here.” Tony lounged on the couch, patting the other side. The masked mercenary joined him. “Why don’t you introduce yourself. That’s Peter, I’m Tony.”

“Moon Knight.” They said.

“So you’re like the knight of the moon or something?”

“Yes.” They stared.

“Oh, you’re serious. Anyway, you said you wanted to talk with me?”

“I’ve got a situation. Some people are after me and know where we live, the tower is the safest place I can think of that has actual security.”

“What kind of people?” Tony questioned.

“Ones that’ll be in pieces the next time I come across another of them. That’s how it started really.”

“I gotta be honest with you. I have no idea if you’re a good guy or not.” Tony breathed.

Moon Knight shrugged in response.

“So you want to stay here for protection?” Tony asked.

“Yeah, I just don’t want to deal with them. They know where we live and I need some actual sleep.”

“Sure, I’ll sort a spare room out for you. But you’ll have to help with a couple missions.” Tony began typing on his phone.

“Thanks Stark, it’s appreciated. Just need to pick up something from my place, do you think you can drive me?”

“Yeah, that shouldn’t be a problem. Where do you live?” Tony asked.

“I have some stuff in an apartment in New York.”

“Yeah, do you want to take the car or my suit?” Tony looked up from his phone.

“Um, the car.”

They left the tower in Tony’s newest car. They pulled up in front of the apartment to run in for the stuff.

Marc ripped the mask off and breathed in. “Don’t mess this up.” Khonshu said sternly, staring down at them. “I won’t, I need to get my money first before I get rid of that guy that hired us.”

“Steven’s the rich one, bout time we should have some for ourselves.” Jake chimed in.

Tony had decided to follow inside as well. But was confused when he heard their voice.

“Yeah, but it’s not like he keeps it to himself. It’s mine, but he’s responsible out of all us. I don’t even know what you’d do with it Jake. Khonshu would just burn it and I...” Marc thought for a second.

“You what? Would spend it on therapy.” Jake stated.

“You know why I keep getting therapy! The others tried to kill me and one even stole Khonshu.” Marc raised their voice.

“Maybe it’s because we were dumped in that mental hospital for years. All you do is distract yourself from your miserable life by slicing up people for fun.” Jake spoke out loud this time.

“Hey! You can’t do that. It’s not like your life is any better! Half the time I think you put some weird drug in my body. I wake up and you don’t tell us anything about what you did, what you get up to!” Marc scolded.

“Marc. Turn around.” Khonshu informed them.

“Why?”

“It seems Stark has followed us in.”

“How long have you known?” Marc asked in their head.

“Since you and Jake started arguing. Remember you took off the mask.”

Marc grabbed for the mask and put it back on in a rush, leaving their mouth uncovered. “I know you’re behind Stark. You’re just so quiet when you want to be.” They turned around to face him.

“Who were you talking to? Seemed pretty serious.” He asked.

“Just my um...” Marc gestured to their head.

“Got what you need?” Tony scanned the room for anything.

“Yeah, it’s just in this bag.” They said, grabbing it from the chair.

“You want me to pick you up some food? Me and Peter went out earlier.” Tony asked when they both got back in the car.

“No I don’t need anything.” Marc declined.

Steven immediately fronted. “They’ll have whatever is closest, it’s been a couple days since they’ve had food.” Steven left, wanting to make sure they eat something.

“No problem, I’ll take you to a nice restaurant if you want.” Tony replied.

“This how all your hook ups go? Dinner then take them back home.”

“Not unless you want it to. But no, not all are like that.”

“That’s right. You skip the dinner don’t you.”

The rest of the car journey was awkwardly silent. Occasionally Moon Knight would say something out loud, startling and confusing Tony.

“My son, this better turn out the way you plan it to. Or I’ll deal with things myself and you won’t want me to do that.” Khonshu spoke from the backseat.

Moon Knight looked up to the mirror to look at him. But turned around anyway to face Khonshu. “It won’t. Please.”

“I have faith in you my son. You willretrieve it.” Khonshu reached his hand towards Marc, but pulled back instead.

“Hey, you alright?” Tony asked, glancing at the mirror since Moon Knight is speaking to someone in the backseat. “Who are you talking to?”

Moon Knight reached their hand towards Khonshu desperately.

“I’m not actually here my son, but I will visit soon.” After that Khonshu disappeared.

Marc turned around and saw the front of the restaurant. “We’re here.” They announced plainly.

“Before we go in. Have you got anything else to wear besides that? I don’t care if you’re wearing it or not, but it’s a fancy restaurant and all.” Informed Tony.

Moon Knight sighs but understands. “Yeah, it’s in the bag. I’ll be a minute.” They hopped out of the car, grabbing the bag to find a secluded place to change.

Once dressed, they headed back to the car. Leaning over the side it peer into the window, they lifted the mask up to reveal a grin. “You getting out of the car or what?”

Tony climbed out, stopping once he saw them changed. Marc strolled over, pulling the mask back down. “What? Didn’t think I’d have a suit? Oh and it’s Mr Knight now. Only Mr Knight.” They gently placed a hand on the side of Tony’s face, squeezing slightly. “How fancy is this place?”

“Good enough to let me in dressing like this.”

“You’re rich andfamous Stark. That’s how you get in.”

They were shown to a table, no one was near them so it was private. Tony being there before was an advantage actually.

“So, Moon Knight.” Tony started.

“I’m Mr Knight right now.” They corrected.

“What do you mean by that exactly?” Tony continued.

“I mean, right now. I’m Mr Knight. There’s no Moon Knight and none of the others. You should only address me as Mr Knight when I’m in this suit.”

“Others?” Tony repeated, raising a brow in confusion.

Mr Knight stared blankly at him. But just pointed to their head. “So any rules I gotta look out for in the tower?” They asked.

“Yes, actually. You can’t pick fights with the others on the teams. It just ruins everyone’s day if it happens. If you bring anyone here, just don’t be loud. Please, please don’t jump out windows.”

Tony took a sip from his glass. “Have you got anyone?”

“I don’t have friends. Best to be alone. Other than guys that become obsessed with me and constantly wants my attention.” They said, crossing their arms.

“Marc. You aren’t alone. I am here.” Khonshu said from behind them, placing both hands on Marc’s shoulders.

“Khonshu.” Marc breathed in. “Are you actually there this time?”

“Mr Knight?” Tony tried to get their attention again.

“I’m not here Marc. But soon, I will visit. Then we can retrieve the artefact together.”

“I’ll be waiting for you.” Marc bowed their head.

“What?” Marc glared after noticing Tony was staring the whole time.

“What was that?”

“You gonna order some food for me or what Stark.” They changed the subject.

After finishing eating, Marc didn’t bother to roll the mask back over their mouth.

“You ready to go?” Tony asked, without looking up from his phone. But when he did look up Mr Knight was looking at something to the side. “Everything alright?”

“Yeah, one second.” They held up a finger to him.

“Be careful my son. Try not to cause too much trouble with them.” Khonshu spoke.
