Life

The hospital was quiet, too quiet, Maya could hear nothing but the buzzing in her ears. She hadn't seen Carina for two hours, she had been taken to X-ray and CT scan, and then Teddy came in and said that they needed authorization for surgery right away. There was no news, even the interns didn't show up. None of the firefighters moved, didn't get up, didn't talk, they just sat and prayed. Andy and Vic sat next to Maya and held her hands

Meanwhile, in the operating room, there was an argument about where to start first. Meredith said she needed to do an internal diagnostic. Teddy wanted to check her chest. Addison said she should work with Meredith on her abdomen and examine the baby. Linc also started working on her legs and her right clavicle, which was also broken. The only one standing around saying nothing was Bailey. She needed to think. She decided to take control of the situation.

"We'll start with the stomach. Meredith and Addison, you do the work. Linc, in the meantime, can you work on her collarbone so she doesn't damage the muscle further?"

"Yeah, I can start with the collarbones, but her legs are in really bad shape. I don't know if I can do anything with them if we wait any longer."

"Then start with the legs," this decision was hard for Bailey to make, but she was sure she had done the right thing, "Teddy, when Meredith and Addison are done, go straight to the chest."

Everyone started their tasks at once. The situation was even worse than they had expected. They had to remove about 40% of the liver, part of the intestine and restore the blood supply to one kidney. Two ribs were also broken, one of which punctured the right lung. At first glance, the baby seemed to be doing well, which again surprised Dr. Montgomery - "This baby clearly wants to live," she thought. But then the obstetrician noticed a small tear in the placenta, immediately calling attention to it. Linc had wondered at one time what to do with the legs, because he couldn't insert plates because of Carina's illness, so he decided to put the bones in place, connect the muscles and hope for the strength of the cast.

After two hours of surgery, half the work was done, and now Teddy stepped in. She was saving the ribs, or rather fragments of them, so they wouldn't do anything. Bailey was in control of the situation. She called Dr. Hunt to help Linc, and he was already working on the clavicle. Suddenly she realized that the Station 19 team hadn't known anything for almost three hours. Miranda told the doctors she'd be back in a few minutes, everyone was so focused that they were barely paying attention to what the head of surgery was saying.

The waiting room was a little different now. Sullivan and Ross went back to the station, Vic and Travis went to get coffee for everyone, Theo went to the bathroom, and only Maya, Andy, and Ben remained in the room. The Latina had been sitting in the same pose for the last three hours, she was uncomfortable, but she didn't move. Warren was a little farther away from her, but he hadn't moved either. Maya didn't even seem to be breathing, but her thoughts were racing at the speed of light. She didn't understand anything, but suddenly remembered that she had to text her mom, she hadn't gotten her thoughts together in the truck. The blonde abruptly reached for the phone, startling her friend; She decided it was better to call and dialed the number.

"Mom, it's Maya. Сarina had an accident and is in the hospital now, they've been operating on her for three hours, I don't know what to do, can you come as soon as possible?"

"Maya, wait, I can't follow what you're saying. How did this happen?"

«Some driver hit her but fled the scene."

— Oh, my God, how is she?

«I don't know, no one came to" As Maya was about to finish her words Ben called out to her, she looked up and saw Miranda almost running towards them: "Mom, wait a second, one of the doctors is here."

"Can you put it on speaker? I want to hear it too"-without answering, Maya did as her mom asked.

"The situation is complicated, I must say. There is a lot of internal damage and a lot of external damage, but she is holding on." - As soon as Bailey finished the message, Andy saw that Maya was barely standing, so she shifted her friend's weight completely onto herself.- "Also there is another concussion, but this time of the third degree."

Maya fell into a chair and covered her eyes with her hands. Andy sat down next to her again, and Ben went over to his wife to hug her. Katherine was not heard at all, but suddenly everyone heard the sound of an engine.

"Mom, what are you doing?" - Maya barely managed to get out.

"I'm coming to you, I can't be at home while Сarina is fighting for her life and the life of my grandson." - на цих словах блондинка, ніби отримала новий прилив енергії і знову вскочила до Міранди

"Dr. Bailey! My son, what's wrong with him, you didn't say anything about him?"

"He's fine, Addison Montgomery is a great doctor and she will do everything to make sure he sees this world in 5 months," the doctor said with a slight smile.

At that moment, everyone breathed a sigh of relief - there is hope.

Half an hour later, Vic and Travis arrived, and Katerina arrived. Andy immediately told her friends everything, and for the first time in many hours they smiled

Finally, after a long 6 hours of surgery, they decided to put her in a coma to give her body time to rest and then Сarina was transferred to the intensive care unit and Maya went there immediately. If any of the doctors had known that she would not leave this room for a minute for the next few days, they would not have let her in.

One of the doctors was always in the ward to support Maya and their close friend.

Teddy sat first and had tears in her eyes almost the entire time. Who could do this to a beautiful person like Сarina? Fleeing the scene of an accident and not even reporting it to 911. An hour later, Teddy was called away and Meredith came in instead. She and the brunette had become friends while she was dating her brother. Then there was Maggie, Addison, and Jo. Everyone was changing except Maya, who was now lying by her wife's side, as carefully and gently as she could and kept her hand on small belly, as what seemed like a million wires were coming out of Carina's body.

***Сarina and Lucas***

To my surprise, we didn't "fly" to the hospital, but got into former chief's car and drove through the streets of Seattle. At first we were driving quietly, but then we started talking. Lucas asked me about my life at the station, how I met everyone. I felt strange about these questions, because if he knew how I had lived my life, then he must have known about the life of the station after his death, but I was happy to tell him every detail anyway. I was so engrossed in the story that I didn't even notice that we had arrived at the hospital stop.

As soon as I got out of the car, I immediately felt a certain heaviness in my legs and body in general

"Chief Ripley, why do I feel so strange?"

"First of all, we're already familiar enough to be on a first-name basis, and secondly, you'll understand why" he had a hint of a smile on his face and I was glad of it.

As soon as we entered the hospital, I felt at home. There was a commotion, everyone was running somewhere, but it was so familiar that even I felt calmer

I realized that there was a lot of time, so I gave Сarina a chance to rest and look around. I was like a guide in the other world, but fortunately, Dr. Deluca had no sense of death, so I knew I just had to be with her until she came back to the real world. For a second, I thought about how great it would be to go back to Victoria. Yes, I would definitely spend the rest of my life with her, but my fellow traveler pulled me away from these thoughts.

"I'm ready to move on. Where do we go?"

"We are going to room 206"

We walked slowly, looking at each ward and the people in it

"Wait. Room 206 is on the intensive care floor for very serious patients. I'm so sick?"

"Unfortunately, yes. The situation is bad, but I can tell you this - by the time little Deluca-Bishop is born, you will be completely fine"

I was incredibly amused by these words, so much so that I didn't notice the expression on Lucas's face, which said that this was not my last test.

As soon as we got to the right room, I saw all my friends from the hospital, as well as Addison. I admired her work and her in general, she is a great doctor and person

"Well! Come to the ward, there will be an answer to your question why you feel this way."

I listened to Ripley and opened the door, and the scene made my heart beat faster. Maya was lying next to me, sleeping soundly. Because of my hormones, I almost burst into tears at the sweetness of my wife, but then my emotions changed to fear. My body was so beaten up, it felt like there was not a single centimeter without damage. I walked closer and looked at Maya's face. Her brow was furrowed and her eyes were tightly closed, a sure sign of stress, but I loved that expression.

"Yes, you have seen everything with your own eyes. It has been an incredible pleasure to talk to you, but now I have to leave you."

"Oh, I'll be sad without you, you're a very good conversationalist and a good person."

"You won't be sad about it, because you'll pass out."

"Wait, what do you mean?"

"I'm not going to let you walk around this hospital alone for a few days, so I'm just telling you to "Sleep!""

I wanted to say something to that, but I immediately felt a heaviness in my eyes and legs, so the next thing I felt was the soft hands of the Chief;

"Say hello to everyone, but I hope I won't see you again."

***General scene***

Сarina had been in a medically induced coma for 5 days and today the doctors gathered in the room to withdraw the medication and try to awaken her. I was incredibly nervous about it. In case she wasn't ready or her body wasn't ready yet, but there was also a nice excitement that I would finally see my favorite eyes and hear my favorite voice

"Okay. Dr. Grey, you can stop the medication" - Meredith did what Bailey told her and stepped away from the bed so that Maya could get back in her seat

"Now we just have to wait," Teddy continued.

"We will monitor her vitals and if something changes, we will see it right away" - Dr. Altman said this more to the doctors and herself than to Maya, who was focused only on Сarina.

After no one received an answer from the blonde, everyone left the room so as not to disturb the couple.

It was 4 p.m., four hours after Сarina had been taken off her medication. Maya sat by her bedside and held her hand. Shift at the station was over, so Andy came to sit with her friends.

"Honey, please wake up, I really need you. I need you to tell me that you're okay, so that you can read me recipes in Italian again and I can learn the language before little Drea is born."

These words brought tears to Andy's eyes. She could see that Maya was barely holding on, so she decided to ask her again to go for coffee. Although all the previous times she had received a clear rejection, it was worth trying again

"Maya, I'll sit with her, go buy yourself some coffee, or you will fall over."

"You know I can't. Especially now that she's off her medication and could wake up at any minute."

"Mai, you know she can't wake up so quickly after such a long coma. If anything happens, I'll call you right away and call the doctors," was my last attempt to persuade her, but there was little hope of success

"Okay, but call me right away if anything happens. I'll be literally on the floor below" - as soon as she said that, I thought my jaw was going to drop to the ground. Maya finally agreed to come out, even though she had been urged to do so by everyone: the doctors, Vic, Travis, Jack, Ben, Miranda, mama B and I asked her several times, but we always heard either a refusal or nothing at all, she just ignored our words

"I promise you that," I hugged her and sat down on the bedside, waved and took Сarina's hand. She stood in the hallway for a few seconds looking at Сarina, but then she left.

At first I sat quietly, but then I thought I wanted to talk to my second favorite person

"You know, you scared us all, especially Maya. You are incredibly strong, much stronger than any of us. I would have given up a long time ago." - I sobbed, not even realizing I was crying, "You have to keep fighting, for Maya's sake, for all of us. I know it sounds selfish, but you have to realize that you united us and put all your love into each of us." I was so focused on my "speech" that I didn't notice the change on the monitor until Maggie, Teddy, and Bailey ran into the room

"What's going on? Bailey!"

"Herrera, wait," Miranda shouted, "Where's Maya? Call her!"

While I was dialing the phone, Teddy was removing the ventilator tube from Сarina, and Maggie was watching the monitor. As soon as I realized what was happening, a watery smile appeared on my face, she heard and obeyed me

***May***

I walked to the coffee machine like a zombie. There were no thoughts at all. I was tired, dirty, and broken. I walked up to the machine, chose an Americano, turned around and saw a chair where I decided to sit for a while. I realized that I could not live a day without my wife. She is my everything, as well as our son, who hasn't even been born yet. I sat there for about 10 minutes, but then I had a desire to be near my wife again, and as soon as I got up, my phone rang, and looking at the screen I saw my friend's name, and instead of running or answering, I just stood there.

"You have a call! Pick up the phone, it's definitely an important call, I'm sure!" - a young pleasant and happy girl with Down syndrome was standing next to me. I immediately remembered the story Travis had told me

"О! Yes, thank you! I'll take it right away, have a nice day!" - she waved at me as she walked down the corridor to the wards. I gathered my strength and answered

"Andy?"

"Maya! Come here, Сarina is refusing to take the ventilator! Wait!" - I heard rustling in the background, "You have to come right away, she's waking up!"

This was enough for me to get up and run to the ward with Olympic speed. I ran into the room where there were five people, but I could only see my wife's open eyes

"Hey, bambina..." - I finally heard her voice, saw her eyes and, most importantly, felt the warmth of her smile
