“How’s your summer reading coming along?”
Kara stood in the kitchen washing vegetables as Layna sat across the counter from her. It was the summer before the young girl would be entering high school, and Kara wanted to make sure she was as prepared as possible. She’d done most of the hard work getting herself into Midtown School of Science and Technology, and now all they could do was wait for the school year to start.
“I finished it.” The dark-haired girl told her mother. “It wasn’t that hard of a book to read considering I’ve read lab notes of Uncle Tony’s that made less sense.”
Chuckling at her daughter’s words, Kara turned and shook her head. “You really shouldn’t indulge him so much.”
“But I miss him! Now that he moved out, we don’t get to see him as much.” Layna said sadly. “I miss having him around all the time.”
“Well, he comes around so often it’s like he’s still here.” The blonde reminded her. “Besides, you know you can go and stay with him whenever you want. He’d gladly welcome you, especially right now.”
“I know, but….”
“We’re getting reports of an explosion in Lagos that has killed dozens. Sources are saying that the world-famous Avengers are behind the destruction.”
Both Layna and her mother watched the footage of the explosion, and the second she saw Wanda, she jumped into action. “Layna, go to your room.”
“But Mama…”
“Please.” Kara sent her a pleading look. “And get Vision out here on your way, okay?”
Knowing better than to disobey her mother, Layna stood and hurried from the room.
“FRIDAY, where are they?”
“The team is en route to the compound as we speak.”
“How are they?”
“Physically, they are fine. But Miss Maximoff seems to be in considerable distress.”
“Oh, Rao.” Kara paced the floor for a minute before sighing. “Does Tony know?”
“Not to my knowledge.”
Grabbing her phone, she looked up as Vision walked into the room and shook her head. “This isn’t going to be good.”
