Carina had come by the station to drop off a book she had told Maya about on the phone the other night. But she had decided to stay for lunch with the team. It felt nice and other than Jack asking if everything was roses in Deluca-Bishop it was like it used to be, but even with Jack putting his foot in his mouth it was same old 19.
Just as Carina was leaving, she got a call from Pam, saying something felt wrong and she couldn’t get herself to the hospital. Maya immediately asked Theo, who was acting captain, something Carina was surround that Maya hadn’t mentioned, if her and Warren could take the aid car to help Carina with her patient.
Carina sat upfront with Warren while Maya sat in the back. Warren seemed to be getting antsy doing mainly desk duty and Maya wouldn’t fight him on driving, because he hadn’t been judgmental throughout her dark time.
They got to the house and made their way into the house where Carina saw Pam laying on the ground holding her stomach and yelling about how she got her foot stuck under the couch and she fell first on the couch on her back then kinda slide to the ground and then her water broke and now she can’t get up.
“Yea, definitely friends with Peggy and Dana,” Warren mutters.
“Shh,” Carina admonishes smiling.
“Who?” Maya asks.
“Don’t ask,” Warren says with a hint of exasperation in his voice.
“Okay, we need her out from the couch and propped up,” Carina instructs, “okay, Pam I’m gonna check the baby’s heartbeat and palpate your abdomen and when they get you out, we will check to see about everything else, sound good?”
“You can check whatever part of me you want Dr,” Pam says and ends her sentence with a cry of pain.
Carina checks over her patient then after Maya and Warren get Pam unstuck from the couch. Carina moved so that she could check Pam and sure enough she was in labor.
“Alright it looks, like we don’t have time to get you to a hospital, Pam, but don’t worry. Alright, we got this,” Carina says brightly.
“If I knew this was how to get a second date, I would have gone into labor sooner,” Pam joked then a contraction hit, and Carina heard something drop behind her.
“Shit,” Maya mutters having dropped something heavy, “I’ll go…”
Carina doesn’t hear her finish what she said. But she pulls her focus back to her patient and Warren helps her and returns Maya handing her something to cut the cord with and Carina checks the baby and puts the baby on the new mama chest and stands. She sees Maya moving the gurney giving it away more attention to detail that is required. Wordlessly Warren and Maya get Pam on the gurney and Carina follows.
“Warren, you and Dr. Deluca ride with the patient, I’ll drive,” Maya says, and Carina hears the note of authority in her voice.
“Yea,” Warren says, and Carina is reminded of when Warren worked at the hospital and would purposefully seem to go deaf when things got personal around him.
The ride is mostly silent to Grey- Sloan there are a few words exchanged between Warren and Carina as they discuss Pam’s treatment and recovery, but mostly it’s a quiet ride with a mama enjoying the first few moments of the baby’s life. When they pull into the ER drop off, Maya gets out of the driver’s seat and helps get the gurney out and Carina hears Maya tell Warren to take the patient and she’ll update the log.
Carina signals Jo to take Pam and Carina turns back to find Maya already back by the front of the ambulance, “Maya?”
Clearing her throat, Maya answers, “yea?”
“I need to go check on my patient, but we’ll talk later. Yea?” Carina asks and she said to notice that Maya’s eyes are shining like she’s holding back tears.
“Yea, sounds good,” and Maya forces a smile that doesn’t full anyone.
“Maya?” Carina says not wanting to leave it like this.
Maya nods her head in the direction of the ER, “you should see to your patient, and we talk later.”
Carina nods, hating herself a little for leaving Maya thinking she went on a date, but she needed to go check on Pam. New mama’s ran the risk of many infections if not properly cared for.
Warren got into the passenger seat and waited for Maya to say something or not.
“Do you think wooing Carina is a waste of time if she’s dating other people? Or maybe I just need to work even harder than I thought? I want to be with Carina, and she told me that she wanted to be with me. I just need to woo her. Do you think it’s…” Maya asks clearly spiraling.
“Maya! Relax! Okay, I’m sure there is some sort of explanation and it’s not as bad as you’re thinking.” Warren says.
“Right. Right,” Maya says shaking it off and turns the keys in the ignition and drives back to the station in silence. Warren is too sure how to handle this. If Maya immediately goes to the gym, does he go with or does he give her space and trust that she will do what’s healthiest in this case. In the end Maya decided to just begin planning her next date with Carina, they were supposed to go out the next morning for breakfast.
It was late when Carina, dropped by the station, she saw Warren was at the desk, “do you know where she is?”
“Upstairs in the beanery last I checked,” Warren says no hint of judgement.
Carina nods and heads up to the beanery, she sees Maya scrolling through her phone, “Maya?”
Maya’s head pops up, “hey, I wasn’t expecting to see you tonight.”
“Yea, I wanted come by, can we talk?” Carina asks.
Maya looks around, then stands, “let’s go up to the rough, it’s been a day here.”
They walk up to the roof in silence and Carina asks, “did you all have a bad call?”
“No, we might have almost burnt the station down,” Maya says awkwardly, “it’s fine, why… are…no… you came to say something, so maybe you go first?”
“It wasn’t a date. It was coffee and I should clearer, but…” Carina says.
“No, I… we were in such a bad place…. Is that something you want? I guess we never really defined this… if you want… we should talk about it, right?” Maya stops and starts her way through the sentence.
“I want you. Only you. I don’t want to date anyone but you.”
“Yea?” Maya asks shyly.
“Yes,” Carina says smiling.
“So, it wasn’t a date?” Maya checks.
“It was not,” Carina agrees.
“But the other night when we went out, was right?” Maya asks.
“Sí,” Carina smiles.
“Good, okay.”
“Breathe, Maya,” Carina says, and they sit side by side on the picnic table just enjoying each other’s company.
