- We're just friends.
Maggie fished for information and pursed her lips when she heard those words coming out of Matthew's mouth. A barely contained smile betraying his words after she teased him about it.
Just friends.
Maggie had seen the blond woman just once, talked to her for about 5 minutes and saw her need for some guidance, despite her statement that she was done trying to help Matthew. A friend surely would manage to help him in ways she couldn’t, in ways he wouldn’t be even aware he needed.
Something must have made the woman come looking for him, whether love or friendship or just the Murdock magnetism she knew all too well. Justfriends wasn't exactly the impression she gathered from the woman. She seemed angry and frustrated, so there was some history there. Nobody who gets that close to a Murdock goes out unscathed. She was the only person who came looking for him at the place he was hidden and said he looked for her, asked for help. Anger and frustration included, she came either way. And now they were about to meet.
Matthew showered and put on a decent outfit to meet his friend and try to do the right thing. A joke and a soft smile when he mentioned her name. Maggie knew her name. She had read her articles and knew her opinion on Daredevil. So she supported his actions and not only that, she knew his identity. Another layer of support there.
Later, he came back angry and bloody. His plan hadn’t worked. The dangers he faced were beyond her abilities to help him. What she could do was pray he’d find a way to help himself. He learned the truth and Maggie thought she’d never see him again.
Regardless of the current status of their relationship, they meant something to each other more than the dangers and powerful enemies they faced, because Karen got out of her way to let Matthew know he was in danger. Matthew let go of his revenge rampage and came back to the church to protect her, hid with her inside a tiny coffin, cared for her injured arm and fought to keep her alive.
Then, at Paul’s funeral, Matthew got to the church arm in arm with the woman. In his speech, he talked about the people he loves. She only knew her own son to a shameful extent, but she noticed he doesn’t use words lightly. He’s a man who weighs what he’s gonna say. Afterwards, he left the church arm in arm with the woman. Maggie watched from a distance their interaction. Something had happened between them, some issue had been resolved and gotten over, because now they looked way more at ease with each other. Smiles weren’t being held, touches weren’t being spared.
Then, Matthew approached his mother to say he’d see her soon. Maggie waved at Karen and saw Matthew taking her arm and walking away with her.
Maggie smiled, shaking her head. She might be only a nun, but she was a woman first.
