Prologue
Even after a few months, New York was still trying to get back on its feet; the avengers halted the alien invasion, which most people were thankful for, while others were skeptical. Others used the opportunity in the chaos to earn a profit, create weapons, and other weird crap from all the chitauri technology.
Like a small group of criminals that arrived from Japan had retrieved one of those hovercraft they flew around on; somehow fitted it to work for humans. However, the group of criminals was having their condo infiltrated by a single assailant; a window was cracked from having their body thrown against the window.
A woman wearing a kitsune mask was split in color from the middle with one side white and the other green, a tight-fitting outfit to allow for comfortable movement with ballistic armor built-in; a SHIELD logo imprinted on the shoulder of her jacket. Her gloves had metal tips with small holes on end. She was Agent Kitsune.
Currently gripping another criminal by the throat before tossing him across the kitchen bench and knocking over another who was hidden behind it, before she slid across herself and kicked his head as he tried to stand. Taking a punch in her side as another sprinted at her, taking the hit, twisting their arm, and slamming their head against the counter.
“So I might have underestimated how many were here,” Agent Kitsune spoke into the communicator in her ears; ducking under a swipe, an orb of green energy burst from her hand and launched the man into the ceiling. Stepping over him as she moved onward, “How many on the terrace?”
“According to the readings, there’s a group of three waiting to ambush you,” A male voice was heard on the comms first, belonging to Leo Fitz. Another voice continued, and this one was a girl’s voice, Jemma Simmons, “Be careful as the scans indicated their wielding blades of some type. Your outfit is designed for ballistic protection, not piercing.”
“Yeah, I know, be careful. I’d never hear the end of it if I did,” Agent Kitsune chuckled as she took cover behind a wall, peeking through the sliding doors. Then, figuring they were hiding behind the bushes and trees, not clearly perfect, pulled out a knife and coated it in green energy, “I’ll handle them quickly.”
Sprinting out into the open, she threw the knife into one of the bushes; a small energy burst caused one of the hidden adversaries to fly backward. Then, going unconscious as their head impacted against a rock in the shallow pond, the other two emerged from their spots with katanas.
Dodging and avoiding their many attempts to strike her down, she got close enough to one of their blades as green beams shot from her fingertips, melting the blade at contact. Gripping and shoving his hand back, causing the hilt to slam into the bottom of his chin before kicking him against a tree.
“Please tell me this is the last of them so I can deal with the Chitauri device,” Agent Kitsune casually side-stepped a slash from the last man, disarming them with a quick slap on their hand. Then, gripping the back of their head and slamming them onto her knee, dropping them once he was cold, “Fitz-Simmons? Anytime now.”
“Sorry, Fitz is currently trying to focus on the signal of the Chituari hovercraft. Technically it’s a Chariot,” Jemma was the one who responded, sounding hasty and worried, “There are about three hostiles remaining. Remind me why we’re doing this instead of someone from communications, Agent Kitsune.”
“The last time I trusted someone from communications, I was nearly shot. You two are more my speed. Especially you,” Agent Kitsune mumbled into her mask, heading for the last room to investigate. Then, pulling out a unique-looking pistol from her holster, “You know you don’t have to call me that Jemma.”
“Flirting isn’t the priority of the mission, you two. We have to either retrieve or destroy the device,” Fitz groaned in the background at the both of them; there wasn’t any annoyance in his voice, though, “The satellites picking up two heat signatures located next to the device, while the last is around the hall to your left. Have you tested the Night-Night gun yet?”
Agent Kitsune pointed the gun down the hallway as she passed it; the dendrotoxin bullet connected, and the enemy collapsed unconscious, “Helpful…but I despise the name.”
“Told you she wouldn’t go for it,” Jemma’s laughter was light over the comms, probably attempting and failing at consoling Fitz about the name. But, it was all in good fun before focusing back on the mission, “What’s to happen to it, Neoma?”
“I was told it was my call to whatever happens to the device, it’s either retrieve or destroy. I’d rather eliminate its existence,” Neoma replied as she took cover beside the doorway, waiting for them to disengage the locks. Then, smiling as she formed a green ball of energy floating above her hand, “But since you’re practically begging by saying my name, I’ll save the data for you.”
“I wasn’t begging!” Jemma sounded flustered at the accusation but wasn’t putting up much of a fight denying it.
“Oh please, you use her name whenever you want something from her. Which I’ve heard a lot to know as well, by the way,” Fitz countered her, probably pleased about embarrassing her in return. Typing could be heard, “About ten seconds. Assuming by the way your signature is heating up, you’re going to use your power?”
“I might be on the index, but I’ve trained my hardest, so I’d be allowed to use it in the field. It helps when you two designed my suit,” Neoma waited while making the energy larger and denser, calming her breath to focus. Then, hearing the click of the doors, “Now.”
The doors swung open, causing the two inside to jolt in alarm as they quickly mounted onto the Chitauri Chariot; honestly, a mistake. Neoma had blasted the orb from her hand as it connected against the machine, making everything touching it glows green, including the two criminals. Watching as both of them plus the device vaporized from the green energy, leaving a pile of ash on the floor, at least the camera on her mask had identified the pair as if they had any family they needed to be informed.
“Neoma, they didn’t happen to board it when you fired off the energy?” Jemma questioned after watching the two signatures vanish from the device after a few moments of silence, “Your silence just confirms my question. Would you want to talk about it when you return?”
“Maybe, I just hate killing people with my power. I’m always careful with the density, so it knocks people out or just leaves bruises,” Neoma sighed, pressing a button on her mask, the white side retracting into the green, revealing her purple eye. She pulled a USB out of her pocket and plugged it into the nearby computer system, “Just inform the others to send a clean-up squad.”
“They’re already en route. I wondered where you had your communications directed to,” Another voice interrupted the conversation; this made both Neoma and Jemma nervous. Maria Hill sighed exasperated, “I know you’re still annoyed from the last assignment, but you could have talked to me. Both of you, I might have a higher clearance, but you’re both my girlfriends.”
“We’re sorry we didn’t inform you; Neoma insisted on accomplishing this mission due to the Rising Tide leak,” Jemma apologized while also explaining their actions, hoping she wasn’t too disappointed, “We aren’t in trouble, are we?”
Neoma finished transferring all available data to the USB, unplugging it from the port, “She doesn’t have her disappointed voice, so I don’t think we are. But, I bet there will be some complaining about me destroying the item.”
“Maybe from Fury, but not from me. Actually, the three of you will need to come with me. You’re being reassigned,” Mariia responded and got confusion from them. Then, sighing, “You’ll all be debriefed, Fitz-Simmons now, and Agent Kitsune when you get back.”
“A reassignment? Probably for the best, I don’t know how long I could maintain my cover with Stark Tower,” Neoma switched her mask to full cover again, going to the terrace. Then, seeing Stark Tower in the distance while a Shield helicopter approached her location, “The extraction helicopter is here. I’ll see you when I get back.”
