"I saw a documentary once..." Amy trails off, remembering the warm wind coming through the open windows and her dad's laughter as they tosses popcorn between the ad breaks. "They were in the Caribbean- the water was so green and there was so much sun... There's all this treasure- Spanish gold and jewels and shit."
watch your mouth, Amy.
The voice sounds exactly as her dad's did the last time they talked.
"You serious?" Curtis asks, looking at her. She was looking up at the ceiling, remembering the glow-in-the-dark stars that cover the roof of their apartment.
"I am."
She remembers looking her dad in the face, their matching curly hair and their matching bright smiles and saying she's gonna be that. She's gonna go find the gold and the jewels and the treasure.
But, it's getting to close. Too open for her. She shakes her head and does what she always does. She lies.
"But- I- uh, I can't swim. I've never even seen the ocean, actually," she sits up. "Kinda crazy."
"Stuff like this- makes you revaluate all those goals you've made."
She bites her tongue from saying she's gonna do it, that's she's got the degree she needs most to do it.
"Frank-" she sighs. "He knows my dad... He accepted my fake name but he always knew my real one... He's basically my stepdad."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah... My dad adopted his daughter- she's my sister," she looks at Curtis. This is honest, this is too close.
"Frank had a boyfriend?"
"Has. I ran away- needed a break- and dad found a way to keep an eye on me."
"I didn't even know he's bisexual."
"Yeah. He likes to keep things close to the vest."
"I wonder where you got it from," Curtis rolls his eyes. "What's your dad's name?"
"Evan Buckley. He was a SEAL."
"He was on the same op as us," Curtis says.
"Yes, he was. Enough about it. I just need to make sure Frank is still alive. De and Dad can loose him."
"Jesus."
"He's my stepdad, Curt. I can't leave him behind."
"Okay. Fine."
-
Amy hugs Buck tightly, the man laughing. "Jesus, Ames. Don't you run off without telling me again, okay? I'll send your dad after ya."
"I know, I know."
