Clint Round 1

Clint frowned up the tree. “Okay, I can do this. This is basic, kids’ stuff, cat out of a tree…” he muttered, rubbing his hands together. He began to climb as Spidey watched. “Here kitty, let’s get you down…” Clint reached out for the cat, who scratched his arm and climbed up higher. Clint recoiled with a hiss of pain and fell out of the tree.

“I will say I’ve never fallen out of the tree.” Spidey hummed.

“Shut up, I’m getting this d-“ Clint froze, looking at the little girl standing next to Spider-man. “-darn cat.” he finished weakly.

“Nice save.” Spidey teased. As Clint started climbing again, he turned to the little girl. “He made fun of me getting cats out of trees, so I wanted to make him understand it’s not as easy as it sounds.” The kid giggled. “You got any homework? This’ll probably take a while, so I can help you with that while Hawkeye gets taught a lesson by your cat.”

Clint fell out of the tree three more times before calling Natasha for help. “Where’s Spidey?” Natasha asked.

“Don’t care. I need to get this cat out of the tree, Nat. This is embarrassing.” Clint begged.

“Right… I’ll go find Spidey.” Natasha said evenly, walking away.

Clint fell out of the tree again about ten minutes later, just as Natasha returned with Spider-Man. “So, you want tips, huh?” Spidey asked. “Well, for one thing, move slow toward the cat. Move too fast and you’ll scare it or make it think you’re playing with it. Also, the angrier you get at it, the more wary it’ll be. Oh, and don’t look it in the eyes.”

“Thanks, Spider-Man. Clint, you get all that?” Natasha asked. Clint nodded and headed back up the tree. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“Not really. It was funny at first, but now it’s just sad. But until he asks me to do it for him, I’m gonna let him keep trying.” Spider-Man shrugged his shoulders helplessly. “Don’t want him to feel like I stole his thunder, you know?”

Clint ended up calling in the rest of the Avengers before the end of the day, most of whom offered no actual help. He finally caved at almost 5 in the morning, begging Spidey for help. Spider-man, exhausted at this point, didn’t say a word as he climbed up the tree and grabbed the cat by the back of the neck. The cat went largely limp, whether from familiarity or submission, and allowed itself to be removed from the tree. “Wh…what the fuck…” Clint whispered, somewhere between amazed and humiliated.
