Jemma walked up to daisy’s room, pausing as she read the cheeky sign they had bought before Jemma had to leave for hydra.
Jemma had a similar one on her sign on her doorstep, smiling she thought of simpler times, she remembered the day she had started loving Skye like it was yesterday.
Used to steal your parents' liquor and climb to the roof
Talk about our future like we had a clue
Remembered sneaking around the BUS, stealing liquor from Coulson's secret stash, climbing the plane, and seeing the stars, it was so beautiful but the thing she remembered most was Skye telling her about her time in the orphanage, Skye's hopeful voice talking about the future.
“Are you angry at shield for taking that chance of finding family from you? Jemma had asked
Skye smiled looking at the sky before answering “No, all this time I thought I would never have a family but turns out I had one all along” Skye had looked at Jemma with such love and Jemma had known from that day that she loved Skye.
Remembering coming back from Maveth, everything felt wrong, even gravity.
Then daisy had come through that door and Jemma thought she still looked perfect and she smiled wider than she had in months.
Then daisy had told her she loved her and Jemma for a moment could imagine a happy future, then like a brick her time in Maveth had crashed into her and guilt had overpowered her love.
She knew daisy, she would protect helpless Simmons and get herself killed like Will.
She had broken daisy’s heart, by the time Fitz had lectured her on her guilt and she snapped out of her stupidity to finally ask daisy out, lincoln had come into the base.
But in another life
I would be your girl
She had looked at their lingering smiles and jokes shared that Jemma could never understand and Jemma couldn’t even find in herself to be jealous because she had done that to herself.
Then hive had happened and daisy went rogue, Jemma started to become close with lincoln. In one of their absurd conversations, she had asked a question although silly was one of the things Jemma was curious about daisy.
“Is daisy a good kisser?” Jemma asked keeping her voice hushed, a blush already spreading as she asked.
“I don’t know, probably” lincoln answered, confusion present in his expression, and Jemma's expression matched his, weren’t they dating.
“Aren’t both of you, dating?” she asked because hope was blooming in her heart at the thought that daisy still loved her and to have a chance to be with her.
“No, she’s like my sister, we’ve known each other since we were kids” that was wonderful news and Jemma couldn’t help the smile that started spreading on her face, then her smile dimmed as she thought about daisy with hive.
Enough reminiscing Jemma scolded herself, finally finding the courage to knock on the door. No response, she sighed,
“I won’t go away until you open this door” Jemma shouted and a few moments passed Jemma was sure that daisy wouldn’t open the door, she heard the door unlocking but daisy didn’t open the door.
She pushed the door open to see daisy packing, wearing a standard black jacket and jeans without any style.
Remembering how May had forced them to pick black plainclothes if ever they had to go on the run.
It all made sense, daisy was running from shield, the team, her problems, and me.
Jemma could barely keep her tears at bay because it just wasn’t fair, everytime they could be together was lost, though
Jemma had to admit most of them were her fault still hoping against hope that daisy was staying she asked “you're leaving?” Jemma questioned.
Daisy barely paid any attention to Jemma, busy packing her bag and told her a curt yes.
Jemma's frustration grew and she pulled daisy away from the suitcase by her hand, looking into her eyes and seeing no emotion on her face.
Jemma didn’t know what to say, she felt there was so much distance between them more than maveth or when daisy was with hive.
In another life
I would make you stay
Jemma had hurt daisy so much and now here she was at her lowest, what right did she have to give a speech to daisy
so she said the only thing she could think of
“Stay” Jemma knew she sounded desperate, there were tears on her face, and she hoped that daisy would understand what it truly meant and she knew it made an impact when daisy's composure faltered her face full of regret and guilt.
Jemma knew she was getting through to her
I should've told you what you meant to me
'Cause now I pay the price
“Stay, we need you” daisy faltered but she pulled away, looking down.
Jemma swallowed not allowing any more tears to leak
“I need you” Jemma whispered as daisy looked up, shaking her head slightly
“You're better off without me,” she said and Jemma knew she believed it.
Jemma hadn’t told daisy her feelings and now she was paying the price.
Jemma took a breath, taking a leap of faith, She went near daisy and in one quick motion, kissed her softly on the lips, pulling back almost immediately to see daisy’s reaction.
Daisy smiled a genuine one, not the plastic grins that both of them had mastered, and pulled her in for another kiss, it was desperate, of lovers who had been separated for long.
They both pulled back, Jemma hoping it was enough for daisy to stay but when she saw daisy’s face, she knew it wasn’t possible, and with that realization tears poured down her face properly.
Jemma took daisy’s hand again a last desperate plea
“Daisy please stay, we could be something”
she saw daisy’s eyes fill with tears as she squeezed her hand one last time, wiping Jemma's tears gently.
Daisy gave her a sad smile “Maybe in another life” and then daisy was gone leaving Jemma in her room with tears in her eyes.
In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say you were
The one that got away
