Chapter 10
"Marlene could you pleaase come out of the bathroom I beg you!" Lily banged at at door urging her friend.
"In a minute!" shouted Marlene back. "Wanna see a sick trick Sirius taught me last year?" She came out of the bathroom holding a wand pointed at her hair.
"wHAT are you doing, Marls?" asked Mary, who looked up from her potions book.
"Relax, look!" She tapped her hair and it's colour changed. Instead of light-brown it became jet black. "No- I don't think its a look for me." Marlene continued to tap her hair changing the colour to any possible one under the sun.
"I don't think that's very safe." nagged her Lily, entering the restroom.
"Yeah, yeah whatever..." she nodded, looking in the mirror not really paying attention to her friend's worries. "I think I am a blond type of girlie, don't you think?"
"I must admit it does look pretty cool," agreed Mary. "what's your first class by the way?"
"I have Transfiguration. Do you think Ms. Gonnagal is going to be proud?" Marlene was looking at her new her, intrigued by her new found confidence.
Lily came back into the room. "Very much so," she remarked sarcastically "I have Herbology, I hope Remus is taking his year as well, I don't think I would pass without his help."
"NONONO, PLEASE tell me I'm not alone in potions... I hate Slughorn." Mary complained.
Lily taught for a second. "No, I think James and Severus are taking potions as well, so you should be fine. I'm pretty sure you will get along with at least one of them."
"You're right, maybe I should befriend Snape, he is excellent in potions after all, he would be a great lab partner." Mary nodded.
"Hey! Don't say that Severus is actually not so bad, you know..." Lily threw a pillow at her.
Mary laughed. "What about you Marls? Exited to have a class with Sirius?"
"Ugh-" she groaned with frustration "you are never going to let it go, are you?"
"You were like OBSESSED with him last year." Lily added fuel to the fire.
"DUH! Have you seen him? Of course I was! But summer with Mary made me realize..." she winked flirtatiously at Mary and Lily "I don't need no stinkin' Sirius, alright!" she grabbed Lily by her shoulder and dragged her to Mary, who was still sitting on her bed. "I'm fine with you girls!" she hugged them both. "I missed you so much, both of you!"
"Alright, alright we get it, we are just too cool for anyone to be without us." Lily rolled her eyes.
"You're god-dang-right!" Mary agreed.
The girls got ready for their classes and made their way into the common room, where Remus and Pete sat, waiting for James to come back from breakfast. He insisted he has to speak with someone before coming to the common room.
"Hi, guys!" Lily greeted them. "Is there any chance you are have Herbology, right now?" Remus held up his Dragon hide glows, and so did Pete, letting Lily know both of them, did in fact, have Herbology.
"James has potions, and Sirius is god-knows-where... again." Complained Pete.
"So you guys seen Sirius?" asked Marlene.
Remus came with and answer straight away. "For a bit, yes. But he acted like an asshole and left breakfast early. To be fair I am a bit mad at him, now." Remus started to twitch nervously.
"THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR WAITING FOR ME." James entered the room dramatically hiding his dissapointment behind a wide smile. "Let's all head to our classes now, shall we?" He held out his hand bowing in front of Lily. After all these years it seemed like it was a taught reflex. And to his surprise after all these years she didn't walk past his with a snark remark or gently pushed him away. She took his hand and allowed him to walk her to the portrait. He was shook. Lily grinned just like she always did. Rolled her eyes, just like she always did. But this time... This time, she took his hand. He had liked Lily for years, but their interactions had mostly been filled with witty banter and occasional arguments. Why now of all times?
Mary and Marlene shared a confused look. They look at Remus for explanation, but he just shrugged his shoulders and mouthed out she didn't know anything either, looking more confused than the girls would have expected.
"Well, if they can we can as well." Winked Marlene on Mary and grabbed her by her shoulder, pulling her closer.
As they walked down the hall, mentally preparing for their classes, James saw someone, who caught his attention. He taught it was Sirius as first, but the green uniform told him it wasn't him.
I can go talk to him, surely. I can ask him if he'd seen Sirius... that can't hurt anything.
"Excuse me for a moment, ladies." James theathrically bowed again, running off to talk to a Slytherin.
"Did he just call you two a ladies as well?" Mary sarcastically remarked, with Marlene's hand still on her shoulders.
"He gets a bit confused sometimes," nodded Pete watching James walk away, just like everyone else. "For example, he didn't mention Quidditch once today. James Potter is changing..."
"Yeah, right." started Remus, "Maybe all of you should stop looking at James and get to your classes, let's go Lily, Pete... we will be late." He grabbed his friends by their hoods and dragged them way.
Mary and Marlene stayed alone. Watching James and trying to figure out who he's approaching.
"Wow, do you think he is planning a prank or something?" Mary asked.
"I'm not sure, but it could be possible." Marlene nodded. "I wonder who it is, I can't see clearly. Maybe it's Regulus."
"You mean Sirius's brother? What do you know about him anyways?"
"YEAH, well, when Sirius and I worked on our Transfiguration Project last year, he talked about him sometimes. To be fair, I taught Regulus didn't go to Hogwarts yet, since they seem to be so close, but you never saw Sirius talking to anyone who could resemble his brother... But I found out he is year under us. Which was... surprising."
Mary nervously laughed trying to hide her red face. "If you don't mid me asking Marlene... Did anything ever happened between you and Sirius?"
"OH- well no, I did like him for a bit and we did shag once... But spending more and more time with him... I've grown to appreciate him as a friend... to be fair," she stayed quiet for a second, thinking about what she should say. "let's just say I just like the way he looked much more than his personality, not that his personality is bad... not at all" She backtracked her self "He is just... too much to deal with, i guess? He always seem to be hiding something... AND I just don't think I would deal with that in a relationship!" ended her statement Marlene. "And I mean it in the BEST possible way! He would be a great one night stand, or a friend... but not boyfriend material for me, ya know?"
Mary knew there wasn't any malice in her words, but she still couldn't help but to feel a little sad on Sirius's behalf. Thinking more and more before she come to a realisation...
"Wait! You fucked Sirius!"
"Shhh, not so loud!"
"AND YOU NEVER TOLD ME!" Mary tried to whisper but her tone was still loud."I THOUGHT we tell each other everything!"
"I'm sorry, we agreed not to tell anyone. I don't think James knows... I will tell you about it somewhere where we'll have more privacy later..."
Mary was stunned. How come she never told her? Did she not trust her enough?
"I promise Mary, ok? Please don't be mad..."
Mary shook her head and continued the whisper. "Nono, you are right, it's your privacy. Sorry for my reaction. I just never would have thought-"
James disrupted the conversation "Are you ready for class, ladies?" Mary and Marlene shared a look, they will talk about this later. "Shall we go to class, Mary?" asked gently James
"Yes, yes, sure." Mary turned back to look at Marlene, as she walked down the corridor, she couldn't help but to feel a little strange not only because of Marlene.
"Hey, James?" she started. "Are you alright?" She looked at her friend with a concerned look.
James shook his head. "I'm fine." He paused. "Just a little confused... I guess?"
