Darling
SATURDAY
After Kara’s sexual excursion with her boss, Cat, she thought that the next day at work would be awkward. However, Cat maintained a professional appearance. Oddly, Kara felt a bit guilty after the whole thing, but Cat and she agreed they would remain friends.
“Earth to Kara?” Alex waves her hand in front of Kara’s face, startling Kara out of her thoughts.
“Huh?”
“It’s your turn!” Kara glances around, so lost in her daydreaming that she forgot about game night. It’s been a tradition since she came to Earth, every Saturday is game night with friends and family. Tonight’s gathering includes J’onn, Kara, Winn, James, Alex, and Alex’s new girlfriend, Maggie. Kara stands, grabbing the marker from Alex. The large page in front of her stood blankly, waiting for Kara to draw something for Winn to guess. Pictionary is an all-time favorite of the group. Fortunately for Kara, it’s the game she’s best at.
“Okay, Winn, you ready?” Kara picks a card off the top of the pile. Scanning through the five options, she picks the middle one: a Ferris wheel. Easy.
“Okay, three…two…one…go!” Alex shouts, flipping the timer. Kara immediately begins sketching the outline of the Ferris wheel.
“Uh, a cookie! No, a carousel! No, wait. Uh…” The timer’s sand drips as Winn struggles to figure out what Kara is drawing. “Ferris wheel!” Winn finally shouts, dropping back onto the couch smugly. Kara laughs as Alex scowls.
“Yes! That means we win!” Kara high-fives Winn, sitting next to him. All thoughts of the interview with Lena Luthor are currently forgotten as Kara relishes their win.
“I don’t think it’s very fair that Kara and Winn always team up on Pictionary.” Alex crosses her arms.
“You’re just salty because you always lose!” Kara laughs. The rest of the evening is full of competition, laughs, and drinks. As Alex and Maggie win their second round of charades against James and J’onn, Winn stands.
“It’s getting pretty late; I think I’ll turn in.” Alex, Maggie, and J’onn all nod in agreement. Before long, Kara and James are the only ones left standing in Kara’s living room. James picks up a few of the wine glasses scattered on the table, bringing them to the sink.
“Oh, thanks James but I can handle cleaning up.” Kara waves him away from the coffee table as he tries to pick up more things. James shrugs.
“Yeah, okay.” James pauses near the door. “Are you okay, Kara?” Kara looks up at James, surprised.
“Oh, yeah. I’m good. What’s up?” James rubs the back of his head.
“Nothing, I just wanted to check in.”
“Thanks, I appreciate that.” Kara smiles. After James leaves, Kara takes a glance around her living room. It’s a bit of a mess with glasses and plates littering the table, game pieces and boxes spread out around the floor and couch, and her throw pillows landed near the fireplace. With a sigh, Kara begins cleaning the table off. Sure, she could use her super speed, but what then? What would she do with herself then?
SUNDAY
Kara opens her eyes, blinking quickly against the harsh sunlight bursting through her curtains. Groaning, she rolls over, covering her head with the blanket. Of course, she would wake up in the middle of a very sexy dream involving Lena. Closing her eyes, she tries to fall back asleep. Unfortunately, the world has other plans. With her super hearing, Kara can hear screams of panic and distress across the city. In a flash, she’s up, dressed in her super suit, and opening the balcony door.
“J’onn, talk to me.”
“Supergirl. It seems something has gone wrong at LuthorCorp. I’ll meet you there.” Kara jumps from her balcony, her cape and hair billowing around her. Using her x-ray vision, Kara scans the building and locates the cause for concern.
“J’onn, there’s a fire on the 24th floor. It’s spreading fast.” Kara moves closer to the building, the flames beginning to engulf the entirety of the floor. “There are people on the 25th floor, trapped. I’m going in.”
“I’ll help evacuation underneath.” Kara barely hears J’onn as she flies next to one of the 25th-floor windows. Inside, Kara spots three people: Eve, Lena’s assistant, an unknown woman, and Lena Luthor herself. A jolt of panic rushes through Kara’s body. She takes a deep breath before using her heat vision to break the window. With the wind rushing inside, the three women look startled before looks of relief pass over their faces. Kara runs to them, kneeling beside them. The smoke from the fire below is leaking into the room from the vents.
“Trust me, okay?” Kara waits for all three to nod before grabbing the closest one: Eve. Swooping off the floor, Kara takes Eve down to the street, placing her there before heading back for the next one. Grabbing the unknown woman, she does the same. Both women thank her before she takes off once more to save Lena. Unfortunately, just before Kara reaches the floor again, a sudden gust of wind proliferates the fire. With a cracking sound, the floor breaks giving away and sending Lena down with it. Without hesitating, Kara flies directly into the flames, spotting Lena barely holding onto an exposed beam. Just as Lena’s fingers slip from the beam, Kara flies underneath and catches her, holding her bridal style in the middle of the fire.
“Thank you,” Lena breathes in relief. Kara nods, not trusting her words. She can feel her heart pounding in her ears as she carries Lena to the street. Setting her down gently, Kara steps away, ready to take off again when Lena speaks. “Supergirl. I owe you my life.” Lena moves closer. “I never thought a Kryptonian would save a Luthor.” Before Kara can reply, the unknown woman comes up to Lena.
“Lena! Darling, are you okay?” Kara’s heart drops into her stomach. Darling? Does Lena already have a girlfriend or wife? With a sick feeling in her stomach, Kara flies up, using her cold breath to douse the fire. After the fire is thoroughly extinguished, Kara takes off back to the DEO. Landing on the helipad and stepping inside, Kara is greeted by a small round of applause. Kara nods and gives a small smile before catching Alex’s eye.
“Kara, what’s wrong?” Alex whispers through the crowd. Shaking her head, Kara turns down a vacant hallway, hoping that Alex will follow. Thankfully she does. “Kara? Are you hurt?”
“Not physically.” Kara swallows hard, trying to hold back the sobs threatening to tear through her chest. Alex wraps her in a tight hug. The two sisters stand like that for a few more moments until Kara steps away, wiping her eyes.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Alex asks gently.
“Not right now, Alex.” With that, Kara walks back to the helipad and takes off to her apartment. She climbs under the covers, super suit and all, and hides from the world again.
MONDAY
Kara almost didn’t go to work. Her chest hurt, she felt nauseous, and her whole body ached despite being practically invincible on this planet. Kara felt as though she encountered kryptonite, all her energy gone. Stepping off the elevator into the bright space of CatCo, Kara barely acknowledges James as she sits at her desk. She boots up her laptop and Lena’s face smiles back at her from the last article Kara clicked on. Kara’s heart twists painfully. Minimizing that article, Kara opens up a new search bar. Lena Luthor dating, Kara types. Hitting enter, the web comes up with several articles about Lena’s previous relationships, but nothing about a current partner. Kara clears the search bar and types again: Lena Luthor sexuality. The page fills with several articles. Kara clicks through them, but nothing tells her about Lena’s dating life or sexuality. Sighing, Kara closes out of the search bar.
“Hey, Kara?” Kara glances up at the voice of Cat’s new intern, Nia Nal. Not only is Nia the newest intern at CatCo, but she’s also the newest member of the Super Friends, Dreamer. Of course, only Kara and Nia know that.
“Hey, Nia,” Kara greets her warmly. “What’s up?” Nia looks a bit nervous, reminding Kara of herself when she first started at CatCo.
“Uh, um. Cat told me to come to find you.” Kara cocks her head, questioningly. “She thought I could learn from an experienced journalist, like you after my last article.” Nia looks down, shuffling her feet in shame.
“Oh, I’m sure your article was great. Cat’s just…particular.” Kara smiles softly, trying to console the younger woman. “Well, I’m not writing anything just yet. I’m prepping for my interview tomorrow with Lena Luthor.” Kara almost chokes on Lena’s name. Nia’s eyes widen.
“Lena Luthor…of LuthorCorp? She never does personal interviews.” Nia grabs a nearby chair and pulls it beside Kara. “Is there anything I can do to help?” Kara nods, grabbing her notebook from her bag. Cracking it open, she flips to a blank page before handing it to Nia.
“Create a list of interview questions, starting with professional ones that gradually get more personal. I have an hour to interview Lena so I want to gather as much information as I possibly can for Cat.” Nia nods, her jaw set in determination.
Once Nia finished her list late in the afternoon, Kara decided to head home early. Popping her head into Cat’s office, she expected to see her boss plucking away at her laptop. Except she wasn’t. It wasn’t too often that Cat didn’t stay well after her employees left, but perhaps today she had things to do. Waving a quick goodbye to Nia, Kara walks home, enjoying the late afternoon sun. Inside her apartment, Kara fills the tub, thinking a bubble bath would calm her nerves. Tomorrow is a kryptonite hill to climb and Kara is not looking forward to it.
