The End... but not really

Earth-1218

My name is Hanna Marin and today is the day I’m finally going to do it. Today I am going to kill myself because I honestly don’t have anything to keep me going. I looked up at the grey sky. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky but everything in my world was grey.

I was an anomaly or defective depending on who you asked. A girl that was 100% colorblind. The only girl in the world that couldn’t see any color at all.

See colorblindness in general was not unheard of but only to certain degrees. Some people could only see dull shades due to not having as many cones or rods in their eyes to detect color or maybe they couldn’t see as many variations of orange and green, or just had a harder time differentiating between red and orange, or in some rare cases instead of seeing green they saw red and vice versa, and then even rarer than that was me.

100 percent monochromatism. I only saw shades of grey.

The odds of a woman exhibiting any form of colorblindness are 1 in 200. In men 1 in 12.

The odds of a man exhibiting monochromatism, 1 in 100,000.

The odds of a woman exhibiting monochromatism, 1 in 7 billion.

And that 1 in 7 billion was me. In fact I was the first documented case of 100% monochromatism in a woman. Lucky me.

But that wasn’t why I was currently standing on the ledge of my favorite rooftop bar in Los Angeles.

After 26 years on Earth, I was giving up on things getting better. I was giving up on lying to myself that things were not as bad as I was making them out to be. I was giving up on the placebo effect my so called anti-depressants gave me the first few weeks when I tried something new because after all the different pills and combination of pills and just everything I couldn’t do it anymore.

If the next 26 years were going to be exactly like the last 26 years I was done.

So I looked out at the city and raised my glass toasting to the end of my short uneventful life. I chugged my martini in one go regretting immediately choosing that as my last drink. Still I threw the glass over my shoulder hearing it shatter when it hit the floor before I let go of the railing and stepped off the ledge.

I closed my eyes as I fell, happy to finally meet my end.
